Thanks,

Hey Barry, You've done it again. NICE PICTURES [8D] I could see why a person would crash there. Too busy looking at the senery....:D

I got to fly yesteday. I had to take my 4* to a guy at the field that bought it. The UCD's get funner and funner with every flight.
Also, I bought a Katana profile to put my Saito 72 on........ [X(]

Where are you guys balancing your plane at? I have mine balanced at the recommended starting C.G. point and it flies nicely but I'm thinking of bumping it back a little. I see a few people are balancing at close to 6"; how does it fly at this balance point?

Liberator 06-16-2005 01:51 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Mine is at 6 on the button, but I am getting ready to throw my Magnum .91 on it, so I have some adjusting to do. I can't wait to see how it flies with this motor.

It flew good with the cg at 6 and the os 50 sx, but was under powered.

:)I have this one balanced at 5 9/16" I've been back as far 5 3/4". I like mine better at closer to 5 1/2". It makes it easier to hover back a little bit, but not much. It hovers easy anyway. I think is spins better a little further forward. I also think it KE a little better at a 5 1/2" or there abouts. So if you want to hover move it to 5 3/4 - 6" if you want to spin or KE keep it around 5 1/2 - 5 3/4. But this plane is very forgiving on CG. Any old place in there will work. It still lands easy, especially if you use spoilerons.
Have a great day!
thanks
Barry

6 1/2"... floats like a duck, a little hard to prop hang (I figured it out, finally), almost no elevator on inverted

snaps like a beast... you have to be careful, flat spins are a real challenge especially upright, KE coupling sucks, but it can be mixed out. I can literally do 3 consecutive rolls with rudder ONLY. I wouldn't recommend this CG for inexperienced flyers or those with slow reflexes. It is beautiful while you have some airspeed and you are flopping around, but it takes precise, patient thumbs and about 80% expo to keep it under control.

It reminds me of my old F-16. I wanted a scale flyer, and I set the CG to what the scale jet was. Now I see why the F-16 is all fly by wire... without the computers there is no way to control it... as I found out. Luckily, the U-Can has more wing and better ele/rudder authority at low speed, so it's easier to stay out of trouble. Nas, I say if you are up to it, inch it on back to 6", then go a little further. I don't mean to scare you... just be sure to be on top of it. I fly from a front yard, and I can get it in and out fine.

Oh... by the way and unrelated... I have a thing for vertical takeoffs, and the spectators love it. I just get enough speed to lift the tail, then I go full up and away she goes. Yesterday, I pulled so hard that I smacked the tail and ripped the tail gear off. Tailwheel was stuck in the dirt after I landed, so it was easy to find. A little epoxy and glass cloth later I was back up. On that flight I forgot to attach the muffler pressure line . Got some speed, yanked it, sputtered, died, floated back in from 8'AGL. I have flown trainers that couldn't do that. I love this plane

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Thanks guys. I'm going to bump my C.G. back a little at a time and see what happens. Right now with my Saito .91 I only added around 3-6 oz's to the nose so if I can move the C.G. back and shed some weight all the better. Just don't want an uncontrollable plane.

Anyway, anyone that has mounted the Magnum .91 on this, which motor mount did you use please?

Hey Guys,
SPUDs still stuck in SCarolina. I had to do some of that vacation stuff on this here lake my niece lives on. You know boating getting pulled around in an inner tube thing, jumping off of rocks & stuff. Sorry no fishing this outing.

Hey CeeGee I made sure to put some after run oil in all my 4 strokes before I left. So it will just be a matter of scraping the dust off of the UCD.

Hey Barry nice pic's.

Welcome to all the new guys to the thread. My CG is at 5 3/4", with an OS 91

Great star wars stuff.......Well got to get back to this family vacation stuff.:):):)

See ya............SPUDs out

Hey guys, I know that this is unrelated to the thread, but you guys have been a lot of help with the ucando, so here goes! My wife found a Hobbico Avistar 40 arf, NIB with a 40 os max nib. It is the older kit. Got it for 40 dollars! Problem is with the engine. The oil that was used for rust prevention had harden up in the carb. I was wondering if any of you have any Ideas as to how to get this freed up? Every thing else is in perfect condition on it! Oh this plane if for my kids to learn to fly with.

goldenclan 06-18-2005 07:17 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Ok, had a brain storm right after posting, used the heat gun and warmed the engine up, and every thing started moving good. Put some fuel in it and rotated it for a few min', then drained it out and put some after run in the beast! Ready to go now.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

hey golden, you might also make sure(you probably have already) that the needle seat and carb innards are free from laquer, now go teach those kids:D

gjeffers 06-18-2005 08:58 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

oh, you did say nib so it shouldnd have any laquer, just more dried up oil, ill shutup now;)

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

gjeffers, yep checked that also, the kids are excited about it. I was going to try to teach them on the ucando, but this deal showed up and I could not pass it up. Going flying this afternoon, Got the little cap repaired and ready for flight, the ucando is ready, and the kangke cap 232 120 is ready for flight!!!!!!!

Golden

The Avistar was a great first plane for me. It flies straight as an arrow, and handles like a dream. Its really stable and floats in nice and slow. The best thing about it was that it would also let you do some basic aerobatics.

Alright, so I was flying this saturday, and for the second straight week my Throttle servo died. No clue why. They have both been Futaba S3003s. Last week I had a spare and put it in and went back up. This week I didnt have a spare. The rest of my servos are 3004s, but i figured the 3003 would be ok on the throttle.

Both times it caused a dead stick landing. I dont know if it is getting locked in position somehow and this is causing the servo to burn out when i try and move the throtte, dont see any binding when its open. I do have a 6V receiver battery. Two throttle servos in two weeks is just kind of strange. Just glad it was the throttle and not something that would cause a nasty death spin.

:)Twindaddy & BeechTech. Great pictures. Both planes look like excellent build. Good luck on the maiden flight. You'll be amazed how easy this plane flys, if you haven't flown one before.
Our club fly in was yesterday. Perfect weather. Usually it rains, snows or blows but not this time. We probably had 30 planes there. Large number for us. Great day of flying. Flew the 46 and the US120. Had a great time. Reminded me of why I enjoy this hobby. Had a breakfast and invited the newspaper and families. Everybody seemed to have a great time. It was enjoyable to sit around and visit with the old timers about how it used to be (nobody wanted to go back) All in all, very nice day.
Thanks,
Barry
