Thanks guys... And yikes gjeffers... I thought mine was going to look that
way... But surprize not bad at all... Well anyway it's about ready to recover pretty easy fix.. It'll look like it did before, except the red will be 4*60 red, Was pushing to fly it in the am... and it can be ready But think I'll just fly the 4* in the morning... Thanks again guys!! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
yea Ron, i did that comming out of a knife edge at about 20ft and forgot i was on high rates w/o expo and flipped it upside down and freaked.(there was no time for freaking:D),but i just finished doing the same thing your doing after having a crooked takeoff and just smiled and gassed it and it died cause i had it to lean on bottom end(just like hemple) and ended up doing a 15ft stall turn and floped it on the ground, ended up almost breaking the fuse in half and broke the center ribs in the main wing.went back together easier than i thought also. my son got his 46 ucd friday and almost has it together and will do final touches when he gets here from Vegas next friday and fly sat. his first build so hes pretty stoked!

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)raideron, Man, I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune. But hopefully you'll have the UCD back up in the air soon. Sounds as if you're getting the hang of the flat spin. I'm flying now...and I can honestly say I haven't crashed all year. Yea.
gjeffers, That looks like a bad one. Is this your most recent UCD or do you still have one? Did you repair this one? Looks terminal to me. Explain what happened. Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)gjeffers, Sorry, I didn't see your post of how you did it. I won't make you go through the agony of posting it again. But, do you still have a UCD?
Also, I noticed both you and raideron mentioned stalling engines at least to partial reason of crash. Just a thought to both you guys that may help. On the non pumped engines (Saitos) I always shim the fuel tank to slop approx 5 degrees toward the tail. Sometimes this seems odd but my theory is the clunk is in the back of the tank and when you get low on fuel you can have a pick up problem especially flying a little nose down (flat spin) and you have little forward speed. The fuel simply goes to the front of the tank because of gravity and nothing for the clunk to pick up. But if you slope the tank to the rear of the plane, this helps keep the fuel to the back of the tank. Also, another thought, you could just land a little sooner?!?!?!? Anyways, that has helped me experience less in flight stalls. Thanks, Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Sorry double post
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks Barry.... But instead of doing my touch and go, then going vertical
for the flat spin... Well after I picked up my plane and got it back to the table.... My tank was M.T.:-( I knew I was close, But I was going to come out higher up in case of running out of fuel.... But it looked so good, I got carried away again and kept holding it until I heard, "You better do some thing, your pretty low.. I did get it to start heading a little upwards inverted as it went out of my sight(in the ravine) And I expected to see it fly out, But I ran out of fuel:-(... Darn 8oz tanks... Darn me pushing it longer, when I knew better..... The frame is repaired, I just need to put the covering on... I'll fly it on Monday... Glad your burning holes in the sky again!!! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
my tank was full Barry, what happened was a high power takeoff and it flooded because my idle needle has a tight spot on it and i adjusted up aginst it thinking it was seated and came out 3/4 turn ( i was realloy 3.75 turns out) and it craped out about 15ft off the runway, did a stall turn and hit the ground, this broke the fuse and wing( and yes i did rebuild this and am flying it today).this is my second, the first is the one totaled.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks for the info regarding the control rods. I had some 4-40 rods so I put them on. I'll try it out tomorrow. (if it's not too windy. It's been windy all weekend and some guys at the field didn't look like they were having much fun flying.) Raideron and Gjeffers, So sorry to hear about your planes. Gjeffers it looks like yours is pretty much gone. Are you going to get another one?

Hey CeeGee, Thanks.... I have to learn to pull out before the plane
goes below 10'..... Well, it's all repaired... Hope I found all the little cracks and breaks in the structure... One things for sure... I will find out once it's in the air.... But I think it good, And will see... Too windy today, hope tomorrow will let me give it a try:-) |

Oh one more thing:-)... I cut out bigger inlet and exit holes in my cowl..
Besides me being dumb:(.. My power was down a bit, And I thought the engine was running hotter causing some of the lost in power... I have:-) to believe if I had my normal power I would have saved it... Anyway I hope it helps... |

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I had an fun time flying yesterday, I actualy hovered the plane a few times(up high) did a few touch and goes. I even moved the cg back to about 5 inches, increased the rates on the elevator and aeilerons and was having a ball. Then on a touch and go, very slow, the landing gear touched, and stayed and the plane kept going. Was able to belly land the plane because of the slow speed and the only damage was the landing gear falling out and a few bumps and knicks on the bottom of the fuse from the landing. Going to take a few pics of the damage and send it to great planes. Did not look like there was very much glue on the landing gear block at all, just some on the triangels. No craced balsa, or any thing like that. Going to wait until I get a reply fro great planes before I put the gear and the brace back on.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Sorry to hear about that Golden...have you had many flights on it? I tried to get down in the landing gear area with some epoxy and a brush...very tight and don't want to cover the gear bolts with epoxy in case i ever want to remove them...keep us posted on what great planes has to say ..good luck

I have had quite a few flights on it, never landed hard, or had any nose overs. The only damage That was on it was from the wind blowing it off of the stand at the air feild where I fly and it just cracked the rudder on the leading edge, and tore the monkote. Put a peice of pushrod where it broke with some epoxy, and some white trim take and it was good as new. I do have a question. The plane it balanced laterly, but when I do a loop, it is not a loop it is more like a cork screw to the left. The wings stay level but it will come out of the loop to the left of the entrance of the loop IE not on the same line.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hockey - Looks great. Do you like that style of rear wheel over the OEM better? I like the way you did the wires too.
Golden - GP sure has a design problem. Keep us posted on what their response is I'm thinking about heading out to fly. I'll post some picks if I make it. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Goldenclan, Luckily it looks like a nice clean break. Mine did that and I was able to put some Gorilla glue in there. Problem on most is that the block is nice and stout but there really isn't much that it is bonded to so they just snap out. Just glue it back in really well and it probably won't ever come out again.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
goldenclan.. Sorry about your gear problem, Glad to hear damage
was kept to a minimum.. Most 3D planes seem have landing gear holdimg problems, guess their trying to keep them light... It don't help us though, when you make a landing and the gear drops out.. I'm now thinking at the very least to add more epoxy to the area and or some triangle stock also... Let us know what GP has to say |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I landing gear block had some 1/8 bamboo sticks in it also, I fighured since they were broken, I was going to drill them out and put in some steel 1/8 rods in the place. I have never used any gorillia glue, is there any thing special to do to use it?
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I used POly glue (gorilla) to glue Balsa sheeting to a foam core..only thing to rmember is it EXPANDS!!!! foams...up etc...
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
yes I like sullivan tail wheels over stock...if you ever come down hard on the tail wheel it doesnt ripe your rudder off...tail wires are sullivan too..and thanks! trying to get a tracking number from cheif here now!
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Yeah, Gorilla glue is some pretty strong stuff. Doesn't stink either but it does expand out the joint which in some cases can be good. When I used it to re-glue the landing gear block back it expanded in the cavity somewhat and made a nice fillet in the glue joint. It's hell for stout now.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
My U Can Do 46 is no more. The first problem I had is the same as yours the gear came off a couple of times do to weak glue. So i got the bright idea of making a brace out of thin steel. I cut it as a T brace and ran the laning gear bolts threw it and attached it to the gap under the fire wall. This looked good but the next flight I had an engine failor 15 feet over the grass too far away from the field ( I was setting up for a hover). I touched down as soft as possable. Well the landing gear held Wow did not break. But from the left side in back of the canape broke off to the begening of the canope on the right side. The airplane could be rebuilt but I would have to start from the rear canape foward complete build not rebuild the cracks and breaks were very ruff. The wing needs alot of work too. I learned it is alot beter to loose the gear then the entire front half of your plane. Just keep some CA on hand for a fast repair. now I am flying a Funtana 40 and like it alot. I want to get another U-Can-Do some day but out of hobbie funds for a while.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Quick question for anyone running a Saito 82 on the ship inverted..I've seen lots of post recommending Kline etc...however I've seen a few that had nothing more than stock..how are you keeping the the fuel from siphoning when the engine is inverted..without using pressure regs? Engine will be here on friday!
