Mark,
A customer is having an issue installing the Greves Pipes in his 40% Yak. He says he thinks he will have to cut the stinger in order to install them. He can't fit them through the mounts and out the back because the stinger is so long. he says the stinger is 4" long. he thinks he would have to either cut the stinger or the pipe mounts to get them to fit.
Is there a trick to it? Is there something he is missing?

Chad,
What he will have to do is leave the rear pipe mount unbolted, he will then be able to slide both pipes (at the same time) into the mount and bolt it in place.
Try to avoid cutting the stingers, I did that on mine and really wish i hadn't.

Mark,
I went over and helped him today. I can say without a doubt, it is physically impossible to mount the Greves pipes without cutting something. We ended up leaving both mounts undone until the pipes were in. We ended up cutting about 3/4 of an inch off the stinger. There was just no other way around it. Even with the mounts unscrewed, the stingers were so long that you could not turn them so they could exit the fuselage at the rear. With what we cut off, you could still just barely rotate them around.
Bottom line, we got them in with very little modification to the stinger. Just out of curiosity, why do you wish you hadn't cut any of the stinger off?

I cut mine off so they only exited the bottom of the plane about 1/2" so they really didn't do that good of a job deflecting the exhaust out of the plane.
It seems that as the production of these pipes go on the stinger length changes. If yours were really 4" long that is longer than mine were stock and even longer than the ones we used on our prototypes.

Yah, they were just too long in their stock configuration. The pipes now exit about 1 inch from from the plane, so I think it will be fine. The stingers were WAAAAY longer than those in the pictures of the manual. Cutting them was necessary, but a minor issue at best.
Thanks for getting back to us. What a great plane. To see this thing up close and personal is unbelievable! Just the sheer size and detail of this plane. The interior construction looks unbelievable! What a great job!
