Probably too low. 2 cell with a diode seems best.

This may be a dumd question....can a RCXEL ignition be run on one A123 cell or is the voltage to low?
Are you implying that someone may have stepped on his d-?

Probably? You don't know what you are using? And what is the diode for?

lol

I know exactly what I'm using. 2S A123's with a diode to drop the input voltage by .7v to keep it under 6v for the DLE stock ignitions (which will fry over 6v).

The RC Excel ign's are rated from 4.8 to 6V, so I would (and do) run the same configuration on them. Thats what the Pawnee is running, a GT80 with an RC Excel conversion powered by a 2S A123 with a diode on the line right before the ignition module.

Here you can see where I mounted the two servos, one for throttle and one for choke. On the right side of the engine block is the Ign and the other side is the Ign battery. Never any problems on 2.4
Just for reference the Ign pack is about 4 to 5 inchs away from the servos.

If you read my original posts, even though I figured a way to do things, I still would like to know what other people do, what solutions have worked, not worked, etc.
For smaller models a "12" rule" is difficult to adhere to. In my application, 2 meter size pattern models, it simply can't be done simply and efficiently. You didn't say whether you use a CDI type ignition or magneto type. CDIs have better shielding and RCEXL and CH CDIs are better in that regard than others.

As a couple others mentioned, try using the Tech Aero IBEC between your CDI and RX. I assisted in testing the prototypes and can state with certainty that they indeed are excellent units. All of my gas planes have one. Several important benefits. I use the unit in both 72Meg and 2.4 gig systems, not a single issue 3 years running and some 900 runs later

FWIW, I'm not "winging it" and getting away with it. I worked on some very high end electronics systems in the Navy and I've been flying RC since my first Cox 2 channel glider radio and have a lot of experience with different facets of RC including gas planes. I don't mount a reciever to an ignition box but I do install my components where they make sense and are convenient without regard to the 12" rule, simply because it doesn't matter and many installations don't allow you to obtain that. Heck I power my 50cc stuff with one A123 battery that runs the Rx and ignition. I have hundreds of flights in this configuration, it works. Bigger than 50cc I run 2 A123's to a Power Safe reciever, one battery is split to the ignition.

I've never seen an RF problem that I have had to move components (or one of my favorites, twist servo extensions) to fix.

Not only that, your using solid wire pushrods instead of nyrods. A definate no-no 10 years ago.
