i need some advise i am using 2-56 pushrods on my ultimate, however i was told i should switch over to 4-40 so i dont bend them. i am going to power it with a saito 120 or 150. any comments on the engine size also?

JPETERS , I also own a Goldberg Ultimate , have O.S. Supercharged 120 in it . I did away with the split elevator pushrod and instead now run two servos mounted just in front of the horizontal stab with one servo reversed for pushrod symetrey . I run carbon fibre pushrods on the elevators with ball links (440) on the servo end and dubro 440 locking gold clevis on the elevator end.Rudder is via a single hitec 605mg servo mounted towards the rear of the wing using Dubro 440 pull pull system. Fuel tank is mounted on C.G. I think a Saito 150 would be perfect for this aircraft as it's got a lot of drag being a biplane and it would give you unlimited vertical. Don't know what the Saito weighs but i utilised the dual elevator sevo idea on mine to help cancel nose heavy C.G. as the O.S. 120sp isn't exactly the lightest 4 stroke around. Anyway , hope this helps and good luck ,the Ultimate is great bipe!

I have one with saito 180. Very verpowered. I also wnt with the 2 elevator servoes in the tail. Those elevatos are big and the "y" pushrod taht you build would flex easily. Everything on mine has 4/40 rods except the rod that connects the top aileron to the cottom. I NEED to change this just to give me the extra protection from flutter. You will love this plane.

hey if you would tell me what prop and rpm you get out of the 120 os supercharged I just put one in a hanger nine cap 232
I love mine has more power than a saito 150 I have been running a 17x6 apc and it turns 9400 peek and I back it off to 9300 on 15% red max 20% oil

I fly the Goldberg Ultimate with a Saito 150, 16oz. tank, 10min flights and an APC 16x8 on 15% Cool power. I used the Y connection for the elevator and I think that is why I have problems in my loops. If I went to two servos in the rear I would need nose weight.(I think) 4-40 is the way to go on the aileron rods. I am not a big fan of the landing gear. I would like to try carbon fiber landing gear. I also do long take off rolls. I think they look cool. Never liked taking of in three feet. When I try to take off short the plane gets squirrly. Not enough speed to fly.
I like the 150, I can't imagine it with the 180...Oooo Boy

I've got the same setup as RC. I used 4/40 wire for the split elevator on mine. Only two flights so far, but no problems. Mine is slightly nose heavy and after seeing how she performs, I'm going to leave it that way. I too have 4/40 all around except for the aileron/aileron connection. The Saito 150 is plenty of power. I've been flying around at half throttle or so. I put some flourescent tape on the LE of the wings so I could see the plane better below the treeline on approach.
Great bird!

My Ultimate has two mini digital JR 3421 mounted in the tail.
With a Y.S. 120 in the nose I had to add about 4 oz in the front.
No one likes to add weight but the ease of installation and the confidence of the those two servos in the tail out weigh the 4 o.z.. The plane flys great and is truly the best plane, of that size, on the market.

Sorry about that I didn't answer jpeters question.
The only place I woud use a 2-56 rod on that plane would be the throttle, everything else needs 4-40. The plane will perform some pretty violent manuvers so don't skimp on the push rods.

hi t.bob, nice ultimate....i have a hard time with the mini's on the elev tho. may be jus me tho. i had minis on a dymond ford flivver per their specs on the ailerons. both blew (stripped) on maiden flight.....that was fun. still don't know how we (yes we) got the plane back in 1 piece
. i had the strap for radio around my neck and when one went out plane startin rollin....lol. i handed radio to friend that was helpin trim and asked him to give it a shot.....i still had it around my neck......anyway he doesn't stand still while flyin...he kinda dances. well he took control and the other servo went out then but he managed to belly flop it after about five minutes of unreal stuff and it just bent the gear is all. was most amazing save any1 in club has seen....and closest they have seen some1 get choked to death also
. i just don't know if its worth the weight saved due to my experience with minis on control surfaces of larger planes...-Tinman-

I was looking at the bellcrank from Central Hobbies and I think I am going to try it. I can't get my elevators to be even with the stock set up. I'm a bit frustrated at this point but don't want to put two servos in the tail.
Anyone have experience with this bellcrank? Its ball bearing but not sealed bearing...why? dunno. Looks like a good answer to the stock set up

I know this is "going against the flow", but I just want to make an argument for smaller engine size. My Ultimate has an OS91Fx, which is the same weight as the 61Fx. A buddy has one with an OS120 (admittedly an older model). Mine will knife forever, on less than half throttle, while his knife's poorly at full throttle. Mine has unlimited vertical, but not enough to hover (haven't played with props though).
I think that lightness is the key, and maybe the bigger engines (with subsequent weight and balance problems) degrade the performance of this wonderful flying plane.
Just a question, what solution have you all found to the undercarriage problem. The ones that came in the Goldberg kit were too soft. I went to 5mm spring steel and they still bent (and my landings are not all greasers, but they were not "hard"). I then had the steel heat treated and tempered, and the damn thing snapped on the weekend.
Is there a carbon-fibre or dural u/c that fits? Haven't found any in Australia. Any other solutions?
Thanks
Steve Garlick

Don't let Buzz Lightyear fly your plane!!! He IS a toy. A T-O-Y, toy! He cannot fly a Biplane. I have the proof! He crashed my Ultimate yesterday! Just as I was about to put the expensive cf mods on it. Glad they weren't on there.

LMAO...
I am SO glad I had finished my coffee before I read that..
Funny you should bring this up though. I've found that planes I've had pilots in seem to fly better. I haven't crashed one of them yet. Same can't be said for my pilotless ones though.
I've had good luck with Star Wars characters.. Trying to find a good sized Dexter..

Hey tinman
I agree with you on the mini servos and stripping them thats why I went with digital with metal gears.
It's a lot on money for a small plane, but that's a part of this hobby...

ahh ok, i see what kind ya used now....they should work fine. i am going to try and make a crank so i can set both up with one servo. they want 35.00 for one at cen....hobby. i'll take some pics when i get it done and let ya know how it works. i should have just connect both elev. halves together like i did on my TF stinson with a stiff rod with 2 90 degree bends...pretty standard. i believe it would have been easier to do this and jus make a hole in side of fuse to allow for it. -Tinman-
