I' m curiois to find out how much the DP extra weights. I know the first run was comming out at 15 to 16 pounds with a gasser on it. I have a BME 44 that I'm considering using. I purchased the plane with the intentions of putting a BME 50 on it but I have decided to step up to the 33% class so I do not want to purchase the BME 50. Will my BME 44 pull this bird out of a hover? I have the motor in a H9 edge now and it is truly unlimited at 14.4 pounds.

One of my friend has the DP Extra 330L at 14lbs 2oz with a BME 50/pitts muffler combo.

I'm interested in the Edge having the BME 44....Do you fly it in 3D modes (hovering, torque roll, blenders, etc)? How does it perform?

My guess is that the Edge/BME 44 fly around at half throttle with authority....true?

Thanks,

Sean

Default Extra

Mine weighs exactly what yours weighs, 14.4 lbs, with a Moki 210 and bisson pitts muffler.

My edge is great. It does everything well except for knife edge flight. I have to hold a little more rudder than I like. I just did my first elevator to harrier this weekend and it looked good going across the runway at 10 feet off the deck. Waterfalls and torque rolls are pretty easy with this bird. I used this plane to learn 3d with great results. The BME and the edge are a great combo.

I have the BME 44 in my Patrick Extra . I am at exactly 15 lbs, 7 oz now. I was just over 16 lbs before I 1) switched to carbon fiber gear and 2) took some ballast out of the nose. The 44 has very good power. If I already had a 44, I would use it. If I was buying new, I'd probably get the BME 50.

I am just coming off of break-in mix on my 44. I just ran the seventh gallon of fuel through it this past weekend. Engine seems to be gaining power. Vertical is unlimited. I couldnt tell you much about power to vertical out of a hover, because my hovering exits have been less than vertical so for. The plane is still pretty new to me.

Mine is a first run Patrick. I have a few notes and some close up shot of my BME 44 mounted up at http://www.devino.org/mark/airplanepics/dp330l.htm

Hi Cheech,
I looked at your website. Nice looking covering job! I saw that you mounted your tank in the stock location. Does this have any adverse effect on flight as the tank transitions from full to empty? I am starting to build mine as was thinking of relocating the tank over the CG. Where is the CG on the plane without the additional 4 oz.? Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

I left my gas tank in the stock location. The CG doesnt really change much, or if it does it is not negatively noticable to me. The instructions from DP suggest CG at 5.75". Mine is at 6.25" from the leading edge and the hard core 3D guys have theirs at 7". At 6" the Extra is a baby, but that CG is still maybe a touch nose heavy. At 6" it is stable and will land nicely. 6.25" is not much different but you notice it is more neutral when inverted.

The best most complete review I have ever read is Bill Pryors . It's alot of different places on the web, but I found it at http://www.rcaerosport.com/articles/...0/extra330.htm

14.2 pounds seems little on the lite side for this plane. I'm hoping for 15lbs even but l dont think I will be so lucky. Can anyone else
give me the weight of their patrick with a gasser on it? All comments are appreciated.

I have a ZDZ40 in mine. The vertical is OK with an all up weight of 15.25 lbs. I had to mount the elevator servo forward to get the CG right without adding weight. Tom

Vertical is OK? Shouldn't that engine pull it around with some authority? 26 pounds of static thrust

The ZDZ only has 1 gallon of fuel run through it, so it's still breaking in. I'm still running a break-in prop, and have not done any experimenting with props yet. I does not go vertical like the fun fly models I fly. You also have to remember that 26 lbs of thrust is a calculated figure, not a actual measurement. Tom

I would agree that those thrust figures are waaaay overstated. My Patrick on a BME 44 seems like it's maybe 1.25:1, not much more. Considering the thrust to weight rations of a DA150 powered 35lb TOC machine, we are asking for alot from this size engine and airplane.
