I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Waco 30. It calls for a 30FS and a OS 48FS fits so the 40 should also.

No more to be had, I've actually decided to sell the 40 and go bigger. Could not find the right plane for it and I've ventured to the bigger stuff now (60-120 stuff) but thanx for all the replies and keep em flyin

Sorry, I didn't know they weren't selling the Waco anymore. I also have a black one that I had a 30FS on but am putting the OS 48FS on now.
So many projects I hope I finish it soon.

drvcrash - a 63fz would be way too much power for this plane. In my opinion a O.S. 52 or similar Saito would be absolutely the best match. I had the 32sx from another plane. Had I not had that lump already, I would've certainly put in a 52 O.S. or 56 Saito. It deserves four stroke sound! The Y.S. 63, although a great engine, is not only too powerful (not all people have that in their vocabulary) but also too thirsty. With the Y.S. 63 you will probably only get 8 minutes or less at full throttle. I know because my WM Rambler 30 ran out of gas after 8 minutes of flying. I had limited it to only 70% throttle because it was torquing the plane way too much. In fact I had to couple some aileron to throttle even with only half throttle in order to have it stay level throughout the throttle range. So 8 minutes at 70% throttle (admittedly running rich) isn't great run time in my book.
My 2 cents? Don't over do it. Keep it within the envelope and the plane will be a blast to fly.

DragonHeart,
That's the Global Ultimate, they don't make it anymore either. It's a 46 size bipe and is bigger then the Waco. The Waco came in both a 30 and a 60 size.

This is the 60, the 30 looked the same only smaller.

No... that's not a 25-30size bipe!!! We are looking at a very dimunitive bipe. This global looks about the same though (well the covering is similar). It actually is quite pretty. The WM Ultimate has a narrower fuse that makes it knife edge better. Also, the WM Ultimate is quite a bit smaller.

forestroke,
bull-rcu posted a pic of the 60 size Waco. Global, actually Sportsman Aviation, used to sell a 30 size of the same model. They looked exactly the same only different sizes of course.

Salty - actually I responded to the post from the first page... didn't realize that there was a second page. I've seen the WACO 30 and actually I know it is still on sale here in Taiwan.
I don't know why they would stop making it. I guess the 60 is only marginally larger but with infinite more engine options. 30 size planes are losing engine options left and right. Most advancements seem to be for 40 class and larger.

I suspect it's because the "supersize" tendencies in the US have caused people to gradually move toward bigger and "better" planes. I've seen the 30 size still available on web sites for UK and German hobby shops. It seems the North American importers decided not to bring it here any more. Wish I had another business trip to Taipei, I'd love to bring a few of these home.

I would say that the 30 size is still available in Taiwan but not as popular as well. The good thing is that many trainers are sold in the 30 size so that there is still some market for 30 size second and third planes. Yesterday in my LHS I was tempted to buy a Patriot replica in 30 size or a Kyosho Aurum 30. But because my 32SX is currently installed in my TT Lazy Tiger, which despite all my complaints, I love... I purchased a Funtana 40 for my homeless FZ63. Price? US$120 including a aluminum backed spinner. NICE.
Now I've got to get crackin' at making it! It's my 6th ARF kit sitting on the shelf! I'm still debating a VQ P-51. I love to build... but addicted to buying!!!

I do have the 30 sz also. They quit selling the 30 sz this past summer here in the US. I baught the 30 sz after I had so much fun flying the 60 sz. Only complaint I ever heard on the 30 sz was ground looping on take off. I haven't built mine yet.

piper chuck... my recommendation would be to figure what you want first and then come for the pick up... my LHS just offered me a KMP Cessna 337 Skymaster for a bargain!!! I'm not going to put prices here anymore... but I tell you it's really good to be close to the manufacturer.
And for the record... I picked up the VQ P-51B (original razorback version) yesterday... it's second on my list to be built. We are desperately in need of Allies planes in the Taiwan skies. We are way outnumbered 4 to 1, the Mitsubishi Zero being the favorite Axis plane.

From: Laurel, MD,
I finally put together my Sportsman Aviation Waco 30, and have been flying it. Needs a couple of tweaks, but I really like it so far.
The guys at the field really like it as well. Seeing how light it is, and how slow it can fly, I've now had a pile of guys say "wow, that's a natural electric conversion project", and I have to agree. The importer missed the boat on that one, I bet you could sell quite a few of them if you listed an electric conversion package for it.
Oh, mine has an OS .32F in the nose, turning an APC 11x4 prop. Way more power than it needs. And yes, it gets small fast. Flew it the other day in fairly dark overcast, it was rather hard to see, that's for sure. Lots of flying by feel rather than vision.
It's a keeper for me. If someone wants to dump a few of those kits in this direction, I could probibly find space in my shop for another one "just in case", and I bet I could sell a couple to guys here who want to do the electric conversion.

From: Laurel, MD,
Mine is black and grey.
I also picked up a pitts muffler to fit my OS .32. It made for a nice installation, though I had to move the pressure tap to another part of the muffler. I also needed nose weight, but I didn't get the battery as far forward as I should have. It weighs about 3.5lbs, but flys "light" and has lots and lots of vertical.

Montague - i had the WM Ultimate with a 32SX and a bisson pitts muffler. worked like a charm. the pitts muffler just fit the cowl so the runner side of the muffler would actually hit the cowling. but it worked well anyway and i had some very nice flights on it. I not only had weight on the engine mount, I had the 4AAA rx battery ON the firewall with the electronic lead going through it. that was the only way I could get the desired CG. wish i still had it now (sold it when i moved)

From: Laurel, MD,
I forget how much nose weight I added, but I think it was about 1.5oz. But I got sneaky on how to mount it. I took a couple of engine mount beams, and screwed them to the firewall next to the engine. The engine is side mounted, with the pitts muffler, but that leave a lot of space opposite the cylinder. I then screwd the lead to the ends of the engine mounts, this moves the lead to right behind the dummy engine, way up front. It's still very solidly mounted though. If I had put the lead on the firewall, I would have needed nearly 3 times as much (based on how much lead I taped on there when first trying to balance the plane).
I also have it set a little on the tail heavy side compared to the spot listed in the manual, but it still flys slightly nose-heavy, which is fine for me for this plane.
I was really surpised at how soft the straight ahead stall is on this thing. But it does some really pretty spins, esp when the ailerons are crossed over. Mine doesn't quite flatten out, but it does change the angle and slow the descent to make it look really nice.
Btw, I've been told that the grey-black scheme is actually modeled after a particular full scale that was popular on the airshow circuit years ago. Anyone have pics of it? I'd love to add some registration numbers and such. It's a bit plane as it is.
It does turn in to a black blob at a distance on cloudy days, that's for sure.
The WM ultimate looks neat, but I'm not a big fan of the looks of the Ultimate. Now, if there was a .25 size Stearman....
