WM Extra 300
#2
Mine is the purple/white/green color scheme. It feels light but sturdy. The finish is a 9 out of 10 and very well done. Excuse me for comparing but I just built and flew a DP Extra and although I love it dearly, I did a lot of work making it a gasser with all the mods required to keep up to snuff. With the WM Extra, I'm going with the 1.60 as prescribed by World. Just got a Turbo-Jet muffler to help it along, a 20x7 prop is possible with that combo I'm hearing. The plane is setup for the 1.60 with mounts, engine box dimensions and cowl openings. Sub-firewall is glassed over plywood. The wings are sheeted out to mid-span and all ailerons, stabs, elevators, fin and rudder are all sheeted. The big 3D tail surfaces are just as big as the DP Extra, with ailerons only 3" wide instead of 3.75" wide and 50% less bevel-gap. I like that, roll rate versus flutter is the trade off, still very adequate. The fuse sides are sheeted with the only open framework on the bottom. The canopy and hatch are no brainers except for the included pilot which is 1/4" too tall for the canopy. The fuse is noticeably shorter than the DP model and in no way looks like it will be tail heavy. The landing gear feel killer sturdy with excellent wheel pants and fairings. Chunk the tail gear. Get this, you get an aluminum 3.5" spinner in the kit with adapter, not too shabby. Metal hinges are supplied to replace the C/A ones already inserted. All flying surfaces are thinner airfoils than the DP Extra. A friend maidened his PW color scheme this weekend and I was very pleased with the flying characteristics with his 1.60 running very rich. Landings were floaters. His plane was kit stock pull-pull, standard 4-40 rods, horns from kit with GP clevises and the plane balanced with stock radio placement. 2 clicks of down trim and the dude was doing rolling circles. The removable stab mount was unpleasant for him so he glued'em on. Me, I'm anal about the hardware and will do the Central hobbies pulls with ball/swivel links on everything to get repeatable 3D movements. No on-board glow needed with the 1.60. Here's some pics so far.

jelaird.....Did your frield use the stock muffler with his 160? How much did the plane weigh at the end? Do you think that the 160 is a good enough engine for this plane?
Thanks

By the way, if your looking for one of these, call Terry at Golden State RC, he's a great guy to do buisness with...especially where shipping is involved! He will take good care of you, even when mail delivery people crunch your boxes. http://www.goldenstaterc.com/

My friend used the Bison Pitts, no stuffing in one tube either. He flew the plane faster than I would my DP Extra. His verticals weren't hurting for anything but I didn't see any hovering to judge that far. The 1.60 ran pretty rich by the exhaust trail. Made me happy I bought one anyway. He didn't weigh his plane but I lifted it and it was much lighter than my gasser DP model. I'll weigh my components and post tomorrow.

Do you know how heavy you pal's model ended up.
You mentioned it was box stock, what battery did he use.
I'm trying to decide how to power this bird. A gasser will come out at 15lbs. plus I believe. I don't feel this bird will live along life with the vibration level of a powerful gasser. A small one maybe OK. But then were talking anemia...

10-4 Smokey, don't know what to compare too but a Taurus 2.6 (totally unfair) but I will give you the RPMs and prop size. There appears to be quite a following already on this combo, search here on RCU for Tubo-Jet. I'll put up pics of the cowl when installed too, looks like it may just fit with no cowl cutting. Dave was turning 7200 on a 18-10 Zinger Pro and the Bison muffler, totally rich.

Mike, I love gas now but with only the Taurus 2.6 under my belt I can only say, that motor would be too heavy for the nose and the stab/fin mount wouldn't live forever without drastic modification. Wing loading..no problemo. Dave had a 700 mha battery going to get him in the air that day...but he didn't have digitals either. Wish he would've weighed the plane.

Ok, here's is the weight of all items in the 80" WM Extra ARF except, push-rods/clevises/horns/servo extensions and glue (dry of fuel of course). All measurements are in oz. with a digital Royal EX2 Exacta postage scale capable of 4 lb's max. Substitute your own radio/engine components and you have a good estimate of your setup. Remember when you see the total, this is an 80.5" wingspan. Gasser crowd.....that 11+ oz. firewall box cries out for some composite materials...carbon/Kevlar maybe?. Glow-folks...pull my finger...I hear a Saito 1.80 in the background somewhere.

A friend test fly his WM 300S and he enlarged the air-intake holes. I think he wants more air to cool down the engine. I can see from the "Building Tips" in WM website http://www.theworldmodels.com/extra300/openings.htm
They put a OS 160 and mounted it at about 20 somethin' deg.
with extra holes for air to get in.

Capt G, to learn from other's experiences, there is a short list of items to monitor during construction.
1. Motor box is easy to build but may not fit the square openings in the bulkheads when finished. THe box sides were sanded to get the fit but if checked prior to assembly, one could size the formers horizontally, then glue.
2. The rear fin post is only major support for the fin assembly as the front vane/protrusion is glued directly atop a thin rail that provides a butt for the stab roots. Some Kevlar/glass on each side of the fin vane and stab rail would help here.
3. To get proper geometry on stabs, one may end up pulled away from the butt rail in the front leaving a noticeable 1/8" gap. Some filler and extra covering would make it look perfect again, but that dedicates you to permanently attaching the stabs. You could over haul the entire stab root. Some will go for looks and a less than perfect geometry.
4. The wing retainer bolts are far forward on the root, tightening can pull the trailing edge away from the fuse. Another retainer near the rear of the airfoil would help. The gap seemed to get better with time on Dave's plane.
5. Other fliers are reporting looseness of the wing spar in the tube and are using packing tape on the spar. Thank goodness they are not too tight like my last plane. That was painful.
6. In, general, the stab mount needs something if you're a gasser fan and even 3D'ers should consider this. I think we should open up the thread for suggestion on this.

Billy, when the 1.60 is mounted horizontally, the carb and cylinder are right in line with the stock cowl intake. Also the use of Pitts style mufflers cleans up the bottom aperture of the cowl for departing airflow there. No prblems seen yet, but again, engine was very rich.

Guys guys....
Flew mine today (evening), what a nice plane it is!! WM did a nice job in building this bird.
My first gas plane, using ZDZ40 and what a scaring moment it was when I took off (not because of lousy take off but first time gas motor - no experience).
Nevertheless, the extra flew very well in mild cross wind, one down trim and two clicks for right aileron. I flew for only 8 min. though but I am sure it will be fun in future.
By the way the plane weighs 15.5 lbs, I did mount the tail section permanently, reinforced the landing gear, used packaging tape on the alum. tube to reduce the gap in the wings, what else...oh, moved the engine in by 1/2" to fix the cowling trims and to balance the plane.
Sorry I do not have a digital camera (no money) otherwise I would have posted some pictures. Well I took pic. with my regular camera and I will post them asap.
GOOD experience....

I have my WM 80" Extra ready to fly. I put triangle stock on both sides of all bulkheads and tied the engine box into the landing gear plate. Have 3 batteries in it,epoxied the tail on, used Robart hinges, and Rocket City horns. Otherwise it is built stock. The best part is that it balanced right on the money first time! For an engine I used a BME 44 with a JA pitts muffler. There was plenty of clearance for a 20" prop. Unlike another poster the supplied pilot fit in mine.
Specs for my completed plane:
span 80.5", area 1175, weight 16.01 lbs
Specs for similar sized ARF's by manufacturers:
WM Extra: span 80.5", area 1175, weight 14 lbs
Horizon Cap: span 80", area not listed, weight 14-16 lbs
Lanier Cap: span 80", area 1265, weight 12-17 lbs
GP Extra: span 78", area 1157, weight 14-16 lbs
Looking at the above I think it should fly just fine.

One more thing, I puchased a 1" wing tube from TNT and it fit the wings great. Still had to put a litle tape where it wnet through the fuselage but none where it went into the wings.

I can't wait to get mine in the air. Thanks for all the info on this thread.Very helpful.I think I have been convinced to leave my new 160 on the shelf and order me a zdz40.Is the vibaration very bad with one of these at idle?Tivey
