I ordered one and it's somewhere out in UPS land headed to Wisconsin!
I'm wondering if a set of Robart 510s will work for the mains?

I ordered the 88" DH-88 from Hobby people, it should be here this Friday. Going to make her electric and lipo's. When they get the retracts in I'll get those to. The Comet has always been a favorite of mine.
Is there a way to add washout in an ARF? Or is it better to alter the tip like the exsamples in the Quiet Flyer magazine? I think the article was in last months issue.

"if you have to add washout, you can just set both ailerons in a slight up position, kind of like spoilers."
mmmdowning,
Stop!!! Don't add UP aileron! It will have the opposite affect of "washout" which will provide poor flight characteristics. Adding UP aileron will induce unnecessary drag as well. Washout is a slow speed characteristic. This is a racing plane! You won't win the race from England to Australia with induced drag.
I'm sure you are aware washout is to ensure lateral control about the longitudinal axis (roll) at a few knots above stall speed. This feature is basically to facilitate wings level stalls and landings. Washout is to twist the wing from center to tip with trailing edge up, while maintaining specified camber. By placing the ailerons in the UP position you will in effect create an upside down "under-camber." Bad ju-ju!
Spoilers do just that, spoil lift during descent. Upon landing and usually with additional wing panels lift dump is provided to put weight on the wheels. Chances are, if you are on final approach for landing and prior to flare you have the spoilers deployed take pictures because the resulting end will make for some neat "shouldn't have done that" photo's." Gliders and factory test flights excluded.
The DH 88 wing is fully sheeted so warping the wing is out of the question. Have you checked to see if maybe they didn't build it with washout? Probably have.
Good luck, Randy

Randy you are refering to an extreme situation with gliders with lots of spoiler deflection. The effect of out board ailerons slightly up is the same as washout. I'm only talking 2-4 degrees. Giving the same effect as "twisting" the wing. We actually did this with the JHH hawk jet arf, it was discussed a lot in the jet forum, to provide washout and stop its nasty tip stall habbit. Do a search in the Jet forum, and you will see that I didn't just dig this out of my *****.
Speaking of washout, add a lot of spoiler to a 3D plane and it will fly a lot more slowly in the "harrier" manuever than it ever would without them and guess what, no tip stall.

Maiden flight this`week, had to get another on board glow it just came in the mail Friday. Reaching around and under 2 YS 63's running never seemed to be a good idea... I did fiberglass the formers in the tail section and gave the tail extra attention with epoxy. Turned out solid........ During a engine break in run. The elevator rod mount snapped at the U Rod It was poorly soldered. This would have caused an instant heap O' crap. I modified the tail to an outer push rod set-up.....
But as with all ARF's I treat'em like I am repairing them rather building them then I have just me to blame for it's future or lack there of.

I just got this DH88 for my anniversary!!!!!!!!! I'm typing from my laptop here in Carmel. I'm so excited!!!! I'm curious about the retracts and what is out there for "options"?
It "has" to have retracts....wheels up and flying low....I can't wait!
My wife bought my a set of Tower hobbies .46 for this bird. I see that 4 four strokes were used...I'm sure this is because of the ugly mufflers for the 2 strokes may take away from the sexyness of this bird. I may go Pitts Muffs with this..any suggestions? Motors have to be mounted upside down. I think Slimline muffs make an inverted pitts for .46.
LOVE THE FLAPS also. I think this is a real nice looker. I may check into buying 4 strokes though.
I can't wait for others to fly it for their opinion.

I had to take the plunge and ordered the retracts and struts. Got them yesterday. Heavy duty, looks good. Can't help you on the gas motors. I'm going electric. Good luck. I will start mine in a month.

Sorry they loaded twice. As far as a front lower cover on the struts, I'm not sure if it comes with them in the ARF, but I'm sure they can be easily made and attacked if not. The struts have biult in springs. They seem nice. The real test is in the field.
