nope- not a mag91xl but many run the os91fx and it works great and as you know the new magnum91xls, asp/sc 91series 3 is 100% the same as the os, we have also just inter changed piston/conrod and barrel on os46fx, mag46xls, sc and asp46 engines all 100% the same.

Thank You for the info, but now I am confused. Wolf123 has one of these airplanes and he also has an YS 91 which is 120.7mm total length and he says it would not fit in the cowl
And yours is 135mm and it fits
You said you removed the carb choke, so what is the total length of the motor after relocating the carb choke, or did I miss understood ?
Thanks,
GL

Can you, please, post more pictures of the engine area with the engine (top, bottom, 45 degrees, back...you name it ) .

Hi Ducati,
Some pics in attached Zip. The white mount is the factory standard. I used a black mount that was better sized for the engine. Luckilly (due to the design of the mount) I can mount the engine back far enough that the carby is within millimeters of the firewall. Maybe Wolf 3d's mount does not allow him to get the block so far back. The choke flap takes up about 5-8mm so is well worth removing given that it's only there for starting. A bit of extra hassle perhaps at startup but as you know every plane has it's own technique :-)
Having said that, the cowl will be as far forward as possible. This is fine as it's within the tolerance of keeping the plane scale looking. I would be interested in getting a plastic or fibreglass molding of the 4 stroke tappet cover to put on the port side of the cowl as my engine is so tall that some cowl cutting is necessary.
I have to say though, the holes they show you to cut in the manual for the 2 stroke look like a wild animal has attacked it. The fs is definately a neater installation.
Question for the masses: Given the large openings in the front of the cowl, how does all of the inbound air escape? Do you line the bottom of the cowl with small breather holes? I assume that the propwash will mean that it can't circulate out the front. This could then mean it get's pretty hot in there.....
any suggestions?
Ducatti, have you bought an Edge yet? if not, go get one, you will not be dissapointed.
cheers,
Gricer

Hello Gricer:
I bought it already and just bought the engine. It always takes a long time to deliver things down here, but in the meantime I am learning a lot from you guys. For example, along Wolf from Italy, Adrian from Israel, you from Ireland and many others have helped me with the selection of the servos, setup for the radio, engine selection, engine setup. So this is going to be great project for me. While a wait I am just improving my flying with my little Extra 300 Sport 30 from WM on which I am using a 46 OS. JEJEJEJEJE
Regards,
GL

I got the ThunderTiger 91. I know it is smallest engine in the 4S range, but I have seen a few models about this size and weight and the performance is good. Wolf has the same motor and he says that it will hover at 1/2 throttle. Were did you get the SuperCustom from?

Nice, sounds good. SuperCustom is one of the more prominant brands here in Ireland. Just picked it up in the local hobby shop. The only other mainline brands would be Thunder Tiger, Magnum, Irvine, MDS and of course OS.

Hi Wolf3d,
was the wood in the tailsection thickenough to just add the servo in?
I must confess I haven't checked but is there already provision for the rudder servo or did you have to glue in some ply in behind?

You sould see the Magnum manual... the edge one is a blessing in comparison...
I once built a funtiger extra, the wings were permanently glued on to the fueslage and the picture in the manual was confusing. I wasn't concentrating and was rushing and landed up gluing the wings on upside down :-( lol.... it had symmetrical wings so did it matter? yes it did, the plane lasted 3 flights and dove out of the sky for no apparent reason. I put it down to builders error....

Gricey,
Your concern about too much opening at the front of the cowl is valid. You should have at least twice the area of outlet as intake. The best place to cut is back at the bottom around the muffler pipe outlets. However, you may find that you need to cut out quite a bit to comply to the above rule and this makes for a somewhat ugly installation.
I often block off, either partially or completely, one side of the cowl with fiberglass/epoxy leaving only the opening on the engine side. This gives a straight blast directly to the engine cylinder & head fins improving cooling and preventing too much air intake which only pressurizes the cowl resulting in poor cooling air flow. Sometimes you can shape the fiberglass covering into a form of ducting shroud to actually direct air over to the engine side of the cowl.

great idea, thanks, I'm not hot on fibreglassing but might be able to bodgy up something that can screw to the engine mount. If I paint it black it won't be seen that much anyway....
I like the idea of the directional vent though... nice.

It's very easy. Just cut a patch out of 6 or 8 oz. cloth. Saturate it with 30 min. epoxy and stick it place from the inside of the cowl. Make sure you rough the surface inside with 100 grit sand paper beforehand. When dry re-coat it with epoxy to fill in any holes and then paint it.....I usually paint mine black.
If you leave some slack in the patch you can make it concave by pushing with your finger from the outside just before the epoxy sets up making the deflector I mentioned which slopes toward the engine side. When the propwash hits it is deflected or channeled toward the engine side of the cowl.

i've glued a piece of wood in tail to mont extra servo
but one question : your sc120 is 130mm, my edge from firewall to spinner plate is 125mm if i use plastic spinner or 120mm if i use metal spinner.have you recessed firewall?because i would mount YS fz91 but this motor is 119mm so the only way is use plastic spinner(bad spinner in 75mm of plastic)
regards
