Hi Steven04,
Glad to hear you contacted Horizon about everything. Hope you get another Seagull Edge 540 and have better luck.
I am glade I made the mods to mine, this will ease my mind alittle after It gets a few flights on.

Default ENGINE INSTALLATION & COWEL

Hi everyone,
I've got a question that isn't really covered in the manual.
Im useing a OS 91FX with a BCM Pitts muffler. I was wonder if anyone could tell me what the distance is between the fire wall and the thrust plat of the engine.
Or does it really matter? Do I just center the engine on the engine mount. They don't cover this very well in the manual.

It doesn't matter the distance as long as it fits the cowl and balances properly.. those are the 2 thing you should look at during the mounting of your engine.

Well, still no word from Horizon Hobbies...and the other guy in our club just had a wing problem. He lost his throttle, so he flew around a little bit more aggressively, trying to get the motor to die...when it finally stopped, he found it wouldn't glide (and it wasn't his first dead-stick with the plane), and hit the runway a little hard. When he walked out to the plane, he found his wing broken almost identically to mine...except it was the left side instead of the right. It broke right where the glue-in spar ended.

Maybe it was the aggressive flying, but I would expect it to hold up a little better than this...

Can someone post some pictures of the wing breakdown or breakage so I can see what I need to beef up on my kit. Thanks Tom

Default knife edge tucking

Is that befor or after the wing falls off? Sorry could'nt resist, Im afraid to even fly mine right now with all this talk about wings folding. Hopefully Adrian can answer that for you. How are your wings doing and when did you buy your Edge? Im wondering if it just affects a limited run of these or what.

I've had mine in the box for a while, been working on another project. I'm waiting and looking for a Saito 100 to put on it. I plan to pull it out of the box and build it in a few weeks. Worried if wings will fold I will fold them. What do we do? Thanks Tom

Default THIS IS WHAT I PLANE ON DOING

Hello Fly It All,
I think what I am going to do is cut the bottom covering along the wing spar and looking at the area of the wing spare where everyone sayings its folding at. If I can figure out a way to reinforce the area I will.
I may run carbon fiber tape along the wing spare and maybe thats all it will take to reinforce the area. won't know until I try. I can always recover the bottom of both wings with monocote.

Ok I'm wrong... My problem was appliction of too much rudder. I can knife edge all day on a .61... Beautiful.. Just use MUCH less rudder for anyong having a hard time with the knife edge... I'd say that the travle is about 1" to sustain knife edge at full throttle with a .61 in it... Don't try to climb though there just isn't enough power to do that.

to fix the ke tucking use comp mixing, just a bit of right aileron and a tot of up elevator. and our wing is still on after some wild snaps and flatspins.

Hi Guys, had an Edge until an unfortunate failure of elevon horn robbed me off the model (don't use the factory hardware)... I am now flying a Flair Swallow 90 EX. People who enjoy the Edge may also enjoy the Swallow, it's also slighty lighter than the Edge and a greater wing area but is not a scale replica... Here's the build link if you're interested.

Default 540 Wing Construction

I got a crashed Seagull 540 a couple of months ago from a friend of mine and I'm just now starting to repair it. His engine quit while he was about 25' high at the end of the runway and there was no where to go except into the tall grass and small trees at the end of our runway. The landing gear got torn off and the wing was broken in half. When I removed the covering on the wing I noticed lines cut in the balsa that followed the curve of the red covering at the center of the wing. They must have trimmed the covering after it was applied to the wing. Sheeting adds a lot of strength and cuts like these could cause a wing to fail. For those who have had wings fold up check your sheeting, I'd be interested to know if you notice the same cuts. I plan on resheeting the center section of my wing.

I haven't taken any measurement yet but I'm also thinking about moving my firewall back to accommodate a YS91 I already have. Has anyone installed a YS91 yet? If so, how well did it fit?

I you are going to use the OS91FX stock muffler you will have to cut your cowel to make it fit.
i have a BCM Pitts style in my Seagull Edge 540 and its big enought were it wont cause and restiction and fits inside the cowel very nicely.

Default Seagull Throttle Tube prob

I am having some problem with the stock pushrod tube and wire for the throttle. I have a 4 stroke up front. The oil residue from the engine enters the throttle tube and travels right up to the servo arm and spills over on to the servo tray. Over many flights, it has become dark and I feel it might give way with the oil seepin into the wood. I tried putting vaseline into the cavity between the rod and the tube, but the problem does not seem to go away. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Default First Flight of the Edge 540

Test flew the Edge today with mixed results. First flight abit bumpy kept rolling right every time i gave her ailvator.

Second flight was all on especially when one of the wheels fell off. (point to note Locktite the nut next time). Fortunatly I got her down without damage.

Any good ideas on how to get the ailvators exact throught the full range of movements?

check all related settings on back elevators - all these planes are very sensitive to elevator input. check and go through above posts related.

Flew this plane yesterday. It belonged to a guy at the field and he wanted my opinion. The elevator is very sensitive and the ailerons are small. The plane flys well.

around us most guys run it with 91fx or saito 100 both work fine but the fx is stronger with the right prop. i am sure the 108 will be fine but it's heavier than the 91 and same power.

I've put a deposit on the new YS 1.10FZ Any suggestions on the installation of this engine what I might expect as far as fit?
It should balance without any additional weight I had 711g on the front with my 68 56g of that lead The YS is 728g so I should be able to move the battery back and be good. What do you guys think about this setup?? All input is welcome.
