Long ez 46 engine mounting question.
#77
I have flown mine several times last year and I'm running a .46 LA with a 9x6 three blade prop. Performance to say the least is not stunning. It's roll rate is great but it's looping power is very weak and as you lose airspeed you lose elevator control as you all know. Anyway, I'm curious as to what powerplants you guys are using and prop size/manufacture. Also what kind of performance your getting out of this plane. So far for me, it's a great novelty plane but kind of boring to fly. I wouldn't mind installing a .60 in it but I'm haveing problems finding the proper prop.

My Feedback: (551)
The 46LA is no powerhouse, but it should do better than that. Many people put the prop on backward without thinking about it. Is yours on correctly?
In any event, you don't need a 61. (Another half pound of weight does not help this airplane fly better.) I have a Thunder Tiger 46 on mine with a 10x7P APC and it is very fast and fully aerobatic.

Initially I was using an OS 46AX to power my Long-EZ. It was quite adequate but once I installed the cowling with plenty of openings it tended to run lean. Now part of that problem was more than likely the defective "quick fueler" I installed on the side of the plane. So I changed out the "quick fueler" and since I have always liked Supertigre engines, I figured the Supertigre GS45 ABC with its very tall thin cylinder head fins just might cool a little better.
About $69 spent at the LHS for the Supertigre and things are much much better. This engine makes a LOT of power even set slightly rich--enough to leave a very noticable smoke trail in flight--running on 10% Wildcat fuel. It is also very fast, I generally fly at about 50% power and that is plenty fast. I've probably got it under-propped as it makes a very unique sound in the air. The stock muffler being the rotatable "barrel" shaped thing I've got turned 90 degrees to the fuselage.....so it looks kind of like a volkswagen (or better yet a Porsche 911 "sausage" ) muffler. Idling on the ground is no problem. Even with the cowling installed it will tick over at an extremely low idle without getting hot. So no worries about "get it flying quick in order to cool the engine!"
I'll take a look at what prop I'm running and report back. Maybe even a picture.

My prop is on correctly and I'm running my own muffler which gets me a few more RPM's out of the combination. Don't get me wrong, it does fly alright and I am taking off from grass but it really could use just a little bit more, I'm wondering if maybe a two blade would work better for me or just breaking down and getting a .46 AX.
One other thing, has anyone installed any rudder's on the wingtips. I got mine into a spin and it didn't recover untill it was too late to do anything about it. [:@] Yes that means I have practice repairing the canard.[:'(]

I'm getting ready to order one of these ARFs. Been following the threads and picked up a lot of good advice along the way.
Can anyone tell me if there's any significant difference, other than available colors, between the Long EZ 46-size ARFs offered by Nitro Planes and AK-Models? Is one of these companies better to deal with than the other?
Thanks,
-- Rod

Has anyone flown the Long ez 65? I am interested in ordering it, and am wondering if the setup and its flight characteristics are similar to the 46 version.

Rod,
The Long-EZ that Nitroplanes and Raidentech sell are made by the Fly-Model factory. The ones that Alex at AK-Models has are the Richmodel version. Supposedly the Richmodel version was the "original" of the current Long-EZ ARFs, and also supposedly copied by the Fly-Model version.
I think you'll find the differences between the two are:
1) The shape of the engine cowling
2) The shape and fit of the canopy
3) The shape of the leading edge of the wing, which I think you will find that the Richmodel version has a slightly longer leading edge with 2 angle points vs. the Fly-Model version which has only the one angle point.
As I've flown the yellow version of the Fly-Models plane and the small electric version of the Richmodel plane it wouldn't be fair to compare the flying habits between the two.
The good, the bad, the ugly:
Richmodel seems to use much better material in their canopys and slightly better material in their cowlings. If the canopy mounting on the Richmodel is similar to the small electric one, then that is a plus---as it actually glues to a balsa frame structure that fits the top of the model. The Fly-Model version you wind up using screws in the corners of the plastic to secure it to the plane. It's very flexible stuff and works well like that, but the frame on the other one is just a better design IMHO.
Covering---personally I prefer the Fly-Models covering over the Richmodel stuff. My experience with the Richmodel stuff on a Quickie-40 is that it has a clear film on top of the color coat that tends to seperate and peel off. Tends to wrinkle up much more than the Fly-Models stuff as well. As for matching color in a repair situation, the closest thing I could find for the yellow was black/yellow checkerboard Ultracote---the LHS didn't have a roll of solid yellow Ultracote on hand, so that might be a pretty close match. The white Richmodel stuff is a different shade than anything I have found---doesn't match well with Ultracote, Monokote or Econokote. Of course white is the hardest color to match anyway. Apparently you can get the Richmodel covering from Richmodelusa.com which is in Oregon. You might check them out---I've never dealt with them.
As for vendors, hands down Alex at AK-Models is who I would suggest. I've bought a few planes and several electric motors/speed controls from Alex and he gets the stuff to you pronto without inflated shipping costs. Good guy to deal with.
Hope that helps.

Rube,
Yes, that helps a LOT!!
Thanks very much for your detailed reply.
A day or so after I posted my question, I went ahead and ordered a Long-EZ 46 from Alex. I asked around at my local flying field and got pretty much the same comments about AK-Models and Alex that you made about him. Everyone seems to be very pleased with his service, prices, and overall quality, so I took the plunge. Glad to hear you confirm what I'd been told personally since my posting.
So far, so good with AK-Models. I called the number to ask a question, got Alex himself after three rings. He answered my question and sounded like a pleasant, knowledgeable guy. I placed the order on his website a few minutes later, choosing the FedEx Home shipping option to save a few bucks. Got an immediate email confirmation, then a tracking email from FedEx the same afternoon indicating that it shipped the same day. It's scheduled for delivery on Wed. Great service so far...
Thanks also for your feedback on the differences in the two ARF vendor's offerings, coverings, etc. I didn't realize that Richmodels was in Portland, OR. I've in Beaverton, which is a suburb of Portland. I don't know if that would have made a difference in my choice, but maybe it'll help if I need parts, coverings, etc.
I've followed your threads on these planes with interest. You're probably the most experienced guy out there on these forums on building and flying these ARFs. It'll be interesting to compare notes. I'm planning on using an O.S. FS-52 four-stroke that I have on the shelf from previous projects. This has been a great engine for me and when propped right, it cranks out almost as much power as some .46 two-strokes.
Regards,
-- Rod

Good deal! If you haven't seen this thread on the "other" site, here is a most dandy way of mounting the canopy---if the 46 size one is similar to the little electric one which I'm pretty sure it is.
Good Luck and keep us posted. Appreciate the kind comments, but actually Pete (jmupilot) is THE authority on these models. His postings helped me tremendously and I've had fun complimenting his work. Looking forward for your additions!

Received my Long-EZ .46 today (Wed., 5/23) from AK-Models, right on time as scheduled by the FedEx tracking site. Package was double-boxed. The outer box had a few bruises, but the inner box was in perfect condition. Opened it up to inventory it and fondle all the parts. No damage whatsoever, everything intact. I can hardly wait to get started!

Again, so far, so good with AK-Models. [sm=thumbup.gif]
Thanks, Alex!

The distance between the center of the fuel tank at its design location and the design CG of the airplane is not so much to make that much difference in the moment arm with regard to balance. I'd recommend placing the fuel tank in the design location and balancing the model with the fuel tank empty. Works fine that way on mine.
The Rutan "Quickie" is a different ball game altogether....that one does have the fuel tank centered over the CG and it DOES matter!

My Long ez has been setting since the nose in, (posted a blog last year).
I was going to try and repair the fuselage, but thought I would call Riden Tech, and they are sending me a new one for $25.00. I thought that was cheap considering.
I also found out that you must study the manual for your radio, and I know this sounds stupid, but I just found out that on my Futaba, D/R settings is also where you found the expo settings. I made the mistake of wanting my high rate to be 100% and mistakenly set my expose at the same.
Any questions as to how my Long ez flew or should I say failed to. Right dumb move, well that has been corrected, I have a new fuselage due here shortly, and I WILL put it back togethter and I DID enjoy the flights that I got, I like these sort of planes, a also fly a twinstar and love that too.

Anyone tried to fly a Long EZ 46 with elevon control and fixed canard, or canard controlled by flap?
Or another variation is controling the elevator in canard in combination with the aileron as the flap?

I haven't change the controls configuration but I added a nosewheel retract and a speedbrake to my Long EZ 46 from Nitroplanes. Here's a link to the thread.

If there's anyone interested in buying another one of these I would like to sell mine. Just PM me and we'll discuss it. It'll be fairly cheap. I need to clean house to get my 35% extra. If you would like to see a picture of it, look at the top of this page.

Weel guys, just ordered one of theese planes. I ussualy build mine, and not a ARF person, but for the cost, why not. It should arrive in a day or two. I was planning on sticking my Supertigre .46 in, and going after a front retract, and speed brake. I love a unique looking plane, make a nice compliment to the mini fleet. Hope for this to be a everyday flyer, since my mustang got destroyed in a garage mis-hap, and a bit to afraid to fly my 1/7 scale top-flight spitfire. Been spending to much time learning to fly my Raptor Heli, got to get back to my "planks".

OK EXPERTS.............It's time to revive this thread, and I would like to hear from Long EZ owners and pilots....NO 15 year old wannabees!!!
I'm going to purchase the Richmodels Long Ez 160 from AK Models. This is the 96 inch wing, and I would like to power it with a gasser.
Does anyone have any experience with this model?
Are there any threads on this bird? ( I cant find squat)
Do you think a DA 100 single jug will be too much engine?
Thanks in advance....

Sure, why not. One problem though... DA doesn't make a 100 single. Neither does anyone else that I know of. You will just have to find one of the old Quadra 100s.
Please, please make a video of the first flight. Who knows, if it actually gets off the ground you might make $10,000 on America's Funniest Videos.

OK....I may have been wrong about the DA......85 is single, 100 is a twin...Right? My point is........is this doable with a 100 size, or bigger?
Will an engine of this size be too much for this airframe. I'm sure the power will be awesome, but can this airframe handle that much weight on the back??
