1/ Anyone using aileron differential, if so how much?
2/ I have standard throws set up on low rates for rudder, elevator and ailerons. I was thinking of setting max throw on all surfaces for high rates. Anyone know how it will fly like this?

I have no aileron differential on mine, have no indications of adverse yaw. Standard servo throws are very adequate, don't get carried away with too much elevator or rudder. Rudder is especially strong, this plane can do a rudder only roll, just like the original 3 channel Rascal. Fly it and see what, if any changes in control throw you want. I suppose if you crank in excessive aileron throw, you might induce adverse yaw, but doing so is out of character fo this plane. Just fly it, you will like it.

On my Rascal I had as much throw as I could on the ailerons, it really needs it to roll properly. Go easy on the elevators. I had full deflection on the rudder but I used quite a bit od expo. Try knife edge flight, that little rudder works really well. It also can flat spin. The plane is a hoot to fly.

Thanks both of you for your replies.
I'll leave the rudder and elevator as standard and have standard and full throw on low / high rates for aileron with no differential and see how that goes.
Going to maiden it tomorow, I've not had a high winger since my first model, I'm realy looking forward to it.
Thanks again guys,
Didg.

Hi all,
Just got back from maidening my Rascal.....
I'm WELL IMPRESSED
15 mph wind and quite bumpy so it was thrown around a bit, also 30 deg crosswind so needed to be 'on it' with the rudder.
Standard control throws are perfect and 'in character' for the model, as you rightly said Jim.
My other models are 1/5 - 1/4 scale and this flies much bigger than it looks. At 1/4 throttle and a couple of hundred foot up, it could be mistaken for full size.
The only problem I had was that I can't get my engine (ASP 61 FS) to idle low enough, on tickover - 3000 rpm ish - it just didn't want to land
Time for an onboard glow I think.
Anyhoo, thanks again for the advice.
I'm gonna give 'the missus' a while to get used to me having ANOTHER new model, then I think I'll try the Rascal 110 - it can only be better. [8D]
Cheers guys,
Didg.

I had the same problem with my Rascal, couldn't get the idle low enough to get a landing. I had a small OS 48FS on my Rascal at the time. I put an onboard glow system in and I could get the idle down to a slow putter. I would get it in the air, put about 2-3 clicks of throttle on and watch it walk down the runway about 6 feet up. I was asked to not do that too often as it took it a while to get down the runway, it flew so slow.
I've been kicking myself for selling it everytime I see another Rascal. I want to get another but I may get the 110 instead of another 40. I have so many planes I don't have to sneak it in, the wife wouldn't notice another set of wings or fuse.
Try the flat turns, they are awesome to see.

Glad to hear you are pleased with the Rascal. I have the Magnum (ASP) 52 4S in mine. Installing the engine was a lot like packing sardines in the can, I think. I can't imagine fitting a 61 in that space. You must have great patience and dexterity.

Salty25,
Good to here that the on board glow works, I've not used one before so that's encouraging.
I'll try some flat turns next time I go flying, it's certainly a confidence inspiring plane to fly, I was side-slipping in on practice finals on my third flight and I,ve not side-slipped before.
Jim,
The ASP 61 is a bored out 52 so it has the same engine casing as the 52 and is 10 grams lighter with 900 more rpm at the top end.
It isn't noticeably more powerful (though it is by 0.82 kw) but it will pull a 13x6 prop.
For some reason Magnum don't do a 61, even though ASP come from the same factory, so I'm told.
You can get ASP engines from Just Engines here in the UK, they regularly supply customers in the US, check out their web site.

BTW, I think everyone needs "great patience and dexterity" when fitting ANY engine into this model.
I muttered more than a few expletives while doing mine. [:@]

Didg, here is a thread I did back in 2003 on the Rascal. Just a heads up to a possible problem. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_92.../tm.htm#920105
I did put a Magnum 52FS in after flying for a while. It was mostly because I was moving to a higher altitude and thought I would need the extra power, I didn't.
Magnum did make a 61FS, have one sitting in the garage waiting to be installed in a SkyRaider. I bought it back in 2002 when I got a Sportsman P51 that I lost on a rough landing. I think they stopped making them in 2002/2003 time frame.

Hi Didg,( from the other end of the British Isles) I have 3Sig Rascals,Rascal C(electric) The Rascal40, and my latest the Sig110. All fly great, the 110 is very nice with the MVVS petrol up front. Hope you enjoy the 40 as much as I have done so far....H.H.

Salty25,
Thanks for pointing out a potential problem.
I read through your thread, I'll keep an eye on the tightness of my engine mounting bolts and see what happens.
Cheers H.H.
Sounds like you're another satisfied Sig customer.
It's my first model from them and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Excellent instructions, excellent kit, goes together without any problems or modifications, (unusual in my experience) and an excellent flyer.
All ARTF's should be like this.
Well worth the extra expense, in fact I'd say they're good value for money.
Is it the 26cc MVVS you have in your 110? I've heard they're terrific engines.
I always had in mind to get the 110 after I'd tried the 40, does it handle bumpy air any better than the 40?
I still haven't made up my mind re engine choice for the 110. If I decide on gas it'll be the 26cc MVVS for sure, but I'm undecided if I want to give up the sound of a four stroke for the cleanliness and economy of gas, so I may go for a YS140, dunno yet, got to get the plane first.
Cheers,
Didg.

That's correct Didg.the 26cc version from Just Engines, running a 17+8 wooden prop. be ok on an 18" I would imagine. I'am using the stock silencer, which can be a little noisy on full throttle, but I don't use it at full blast.Plenty fast enough at 1/2 and above. H.H.
