Hi, I just bought the Black Horse Extra 300S ARTF, has anyone else built one of these? I would appreciate any tips on the assembly, especially for any weak areas. I have seen the Black Horse Excel 2000 snap its wings in flight (twice), so am a bit worried that this kit may have similar faults.
Thanks guys

The newer planes from Black Horse seems to be better built than the ones before. I got a Black Horse 'Travel Air' a couple of years ago and the quality was terrible. I spent more time reinforcing it than most people spent building a kit. The plastic covering also sucks. The elevators fluttered like butterfly wings if I go more than 70% trottle on level flight.
However, some of their new planes seems okay for the money. Mind you they are not in the same league as World Models, Kyosho, GP, EZ or any of the established guys, but they are cheaper. At least they use iron on covering now. Their new acrobatic/pattern models seems to be able to take the Gs. I have seen a few fly with no problems.
I would suggest that you at least fiberglass the wing joint if you are going to fly acrobatics with it. (which I assume you would if you got an Extra)

Hi MalaysianFlyer,
I have the black horse extra and cap (prototypes) and my dad has built them both stock. I have as much movement possible (not nessary as I am a nutter
) but have had no problems with strength at all. I think that it will stand up to what ever you do but strengthen it if you want. I even flew it on ski's at the weekend, and no problems!

On_Final, Awood12345,
Thanks for the advice guys, its much appreciated.
Awood12345, being a "nutter", no doubt you have pushed the plane to its limits, what are the wildest maneuvers you have done? Is it possible to prop hang this baby?
Anyone have a good suggestion for the prop size I should use? Am going to install a TT pro46 engine, one person suggested I use a 11×7 prop, any other suggestions or advice is appreciated.
On_Final, whereabouts in Malaysia do you go flying??

Hi rockmon,
The Sukhoi flys well normally but with silly movements you can do some cool stuff (tumbles while flying sideways, blenders, tork rolls etc). The sukhoi can do normal stuff like loops, rolls etc too.
Hi MalaysianFlyer,
I like the extra since it is in between the cap and the sukhoi in flight performance. It can be flown in big manouvers like the cap can but it can fly tighter than the cap like the sukhoi. Its a good all round sports model. I have tried to prophang it but the ailerons are too far out to stop it from tork rolling but I have not had a propper go at tork rolling yet, I'll try this weekend. And it will blender.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Sounds good, I think I am going to have to get mine ready for this weekend, was originally going to wait for next months paycheck to get my engine and radio gear, but after your comments, I think I will strip of the gear from my Scanner and blast off this weekend.
I think I will follow your idea of having max throws on the control surfaces, but play with dual rates on my TX till I get used to the plane. Hopefully, I will be able to join you as a "nutter" in the air as time goes.
Thanks for all the advice, you have been a great help

Hi Malaysianflyer,
I used to fly in Shah Alam but now I fly mainly in Sungai Buloh.
I use a APC 11 X 6 prop on my TT46Pro pulling a WM Super Sport 40 and it gives good performance.

we fly several bh planes a cap232 with a sc61, ultra 3d with a rossi53 and so on they fly well. yes we had some poor build quality things to sort out as with most of the arf's we own. but off late the quality of the new range is so much better. we are looking at the 27%sukoi .

UTRA 3D? what is this plane? I don't remember black horse doing it. And when you say "we are looking at the 27%sukoi" do you mean the new 120 size kits soon the be avalible? My dad's currently building the 120 size extra for a friend.
MalaysianFlyer, I'm glad to have been of help.

Well, looks like Black Horse could do with more improvement. The wing joint on the Extra 300 isn't very good, the tips that are meant to slot into the fuselage are very flimsy.
The instructions are terrible, as is the norm with the kits from Vietnam. I was working on the wing yesterday, and the instructions call for servos mounted on a tray in the underside of each wing, with a nice photo of the mounting. The kit itself comes without any trays, as it has been designed for the servos to go inside the wing, and only the control horns protruding.
Being an amateur builder, this of course evoked many expletives, curses, etc. etc.
The area where the servos are mounted are very weak also, looks like I'll have to reinforce this also (God, so much extra weight already).
Of course I shouldn't complain so much, as the kits are cheap, but just wish the instructions were clearer.
One good part was the control rods for the fuselage, especially the linkage for the elevator, very easily adjustable to get the two elevators in line, without playing with the clevises. The fuselage section is quite easy to work on, but the wings are pure misery.
Hopefully will get it done by Saturday and be flying on Sunday.
Thanks again for all of the advice and support.

FINALLY!!!
Took the Extra on its maiden flight on Sunday, flew beautifully, despite my fears that I may have screwed up on the assembly.
Guess these ARFs are worth it, especially if your on a tight budget like myself.
Alan, any tips on how to become a "nutter" like yourself??
Thanks to everyone for the advise given

All I did was increase the movements as muct as I can! I have not yet flown with a CG change but I might try sometime. I have successfully flown this in fog (and I couldn't see the end of the patch! NOT ADVISED
, but I had to get my fix
) This is my weekend hack and I love it!
Heres what I've got it to do:
Almost knife edge (not enough rudder)
Knife edge curcuit (cheating by not being entirely in a knife edge)
Blender
Loop
Roll
Flick
hover with headwind
Don't know what its called but its goes roll, flick, roll, flick etc (non-stop)
Almost torque roll
Tail slide
Hammerhead
spin
inverted spin
side slip
fly with ski's
good inverted flight
etc.........................................

Fook me!!!!!
Alan, how long have you been flying???
I think I will need some time before I can get to the stage where I can duplicate those moves. But knowing that its possible is going to be a good incentive to push myself.
Thanks a lot Alan, the inspiration is much appreciated.

Sorry Alan I could not put up pics of my Extra, as I have unfortunately crashed it. Rather silly pilot error on my part while doing knife edge.
By the way before I crashed it, I tried a new prop on it, and this prop is amazing, makes knife edge so easy to go in and hold. Believe it or not the prop is an APC C/L stunt prop 12.25 x 3.75, if you can get hold of one, try it out, the difference is amazing.
Am working on my Cap 232 and Sukhoi Su-31 (both Kyosho, got a good deal for them) so hopefully I will be able to fly one this Sunday.
Do try the prop if you can, I think you will like it.

Adrian, What did you think of the quality of the 120 size kits from Black Horse??
I have just seen the 120 size Extra and Sukhoi, they look nice from the outside, but the construction seems flimsy to me, am not sure if it can handle the G's for aerobatics. Would love to hear your opinion, as these are the only large size planes I can afford for the time being.

i have a friend that fly's the sukoi120 with a fuji 50 engine , man this is a monster, have had no structure or for that matter any problems, lands absolutely like a baby, he has also just started with the 120 edge, nice plane as good as what is out there. but!!!!you need good hardware and servo's and this is where the bucks lie. i am seriously looking at the edge as the smaller one is so good and as you know seagull/black horse all the same. best

MalaysianFlyer,
That's a shame. Oh well, its all part of the hobby I guess! I will have to try that prop too. What engine did you use by the way?
Adrian,
I have not been able to find out anything about the edge, do you have any info on it?

nothing on paper but had a close look at it, it's pretty well made and the price seems to be spot on, it's bigger than the sukoi but no carbon landing gear like the sukoi.

Alan,
I was using the TT46 pro, it had no problems with the prop, if oyu do try it out, let me know what you think. I do think it will suit your "nutter" flying style... heh heh.
Adrian,
Thanks for the information, I am wondering if the kits they shipped here are the rejects, they are going for something like 330AUS, maybe I'll have to go through each box till I find one thats acceptable.
