Default Big Pattywag

After reading the spec's it seems large enough for gas. I was wanting to try gas anyway. I have spent enough on glow fuel for my os 160 that I could have bought a few more arf's. Lets just hope it comes sooner than late jun.

G-38???I'm thinking Brison 3.2!!!!Or at the very least 2.4.I've got a2.4 on a Lanier Edge and it does fine,it appears that the Extra will be larger that. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Default Comparison

That's a really nice looking Extra. As a point of comparison, it is a very similar size to the Dave Patrick 330L. The wing span is the same, but it has about 70 sq ins less wing area and is a couple of inches shorter. The published weight range is 14 - 16 lbs. If this is accurate then the wing loading will be ok, but nothing to write home about. If it is optimistic like every ARF I've ever built, it is going to be very heavy. If they're talking 16 lbs with the high end of the recommended engine weight, then you can expect around 16.5 to 17lbs for that Brison 3.2, and a pound more for the G38. Both are very heavy for this wing area.

It will be interesting to see what the reality is.

Default GP 300

Don't rule out a BME 44. Strong engine and very light. Mine is only 3lbs. 2oz with a J&A Pitts style muff. My Extra has unlimited virticle with a 20x8.

Default Actual weight

Hi jemilheis,

>>Don't rule out a BME 44. Strong engine and very light. Mine is only 3lbs. 2oz with a J&A Pitts style muff.

BME 44s are excellent motors(I've had two), but as with any motor, make sure you're comparing apples to apples when you're comparing weights. As an example, ZDZs, FPEs, Taurus' and Brisons all come with engine mounts, so their bare weights include the mounts and the BME doesn't. The weight of the Hanger 9 mount used typically on this motor is 5.75 oz, so you're now up to 3lbs 7.75 oz + 4oz for the CH ignition and you're at 3lbs 11.75. That's actually an ounce lighter than what my BME's weighed. As this size engine goes, that is still light....relatively(only the FPE is lighter) The other motors mentioned above (including 50's) are only 2-5oz more(add another 3oz or so for the battery if you're comparing against a glow motor).

My only point is when you're deciding on which engine to put in this plane, make sure you're figuring the complete weight and not a manufacturer's bare weight, which can easily be 1lb lighter than the total package.

Smallfly, sometimes your local hobby shop can be up to 50 dollars cheaper than what Tower shows as the 1st initial price. I think my LHS will probably sell it for around 399.00, not much cheaper but a little. How much is the World models 80 incher? Daz...

Default Price?

I wouldn't count on the World Model's 80" Extra being cheaper since their 70" version is $390.

Default Color schemes

Both schemes are identical Wagstaff schemes. I happen to like it, but that's definitely a personal thing. My choice between the two would be neither. If you like the color scheme, buy the Dave Patrick Extra in the ARC version and cover it the way you want it(If you don't want to cover and don't like the DP Yellow then I guess you'll have to get one of these). There's a guy on RCU that has done this and duplicated this color scheme perfectly.

IMHO, if you just want an Extra in this size, buy the Dave Patrick Extra. Dave Patrick is one of the most accomplished model aircraft designers in the industry with a long proven track record of producing great flying planes. You have no idea what you're getting with these two kits. With all the talk of how heavy the DP Extra is, from the published specs of these two new kits, it appears the DP Extra will be the lightest(based on real weights of the DP comparing against published weights of the others-they'll probably end up heavier), and has the largest wing area. If all three were available when I bought my DP, it would still be a no brainer for me, DP all the way....except you'll have to accept the small company thing with on and off again customer service.

I guess I didn't look hard enough,I didn't realize that the P-51 scheme was actually on the Extra,I just glanced and assumed it was a P-51,Guess I should pay more attention,I just looked at the small pics.IMO the red is much better looking.

Default Me too.

>>I guess I didn't look hard enough

Oops. I missed it too. I actually don't think it looks bad, but it seems pretty silly...unless there is a "real" Extra this is copying, which I doubt.
