Just discovered this thread with all the useful information on CG in it!
I bought one of these some months ago and got maybe 6 or so flights in with it. Main problem I had was that the plane tended to dive as I opened the throttle. In view of what I have now read it seems likely that mine too may have had the CG too far back. Presumably if I was running down elevator to compensate an increase in speed would increase the effect of the elevator and push the nose down. Does this seem logical?
Mine has an MT57 in it which provides adequate power[>:] This was recommended as a combo by the place I bought it, however as others have suggested a 40 would be a better match. At 7 kgm it's no heavier than most though.
Last time out was a few months ago, due to a wheel pant coming loose the model tripped over on landing. It seems that the trip had broken the top off the rudder, but the missing part was nowhere to be found (this in the middle of the runway). In the end I had to conclude that it had in fact gone missing in flight. Rather than try a repair I tried to get a new one from CMP. After some effort and time I was eventually able to get one and fitted it a couple of weeks ago. The decals didn't quite line up but it looks a lot better than a repair!
Was all set to fly again but on checking it seemed that the muffler had exploded! That's the way it looked anyway, I eventually concluded that the outlet pipe had caught the ground when the plane tripped, and the distortion had forced the back of the muffler to peel out in a way that looked like an explosion.
So, as of now I am waiting for a new muffler. After reading this thread I am going to work on the CG before the plane gets out again.

Do your math to find the C.G. Dont trust the book. I'm telling you right now that those holes, or at least my balancing holes, were set at the 42% mark after I done the math! You are definately a better pilot than I am if you can fly that thing the way it is! I finally got mine flying right and now its just a hanger queen as I enjoy flying my Yak more. The edge flys too much like an extra 230. Real pitchy, knife edges are impossible without mixing, harriers and 3d are unstable. \Maybe I'm just being paranoid after my little jet blue incident!Good luck!!!

I hung a nice DA-50 on mine and if there is such a thing as too much power, this is it. I swung a 24x8 prop and the plane just wouldn't slow down enough to land. I never went above 1/4 throttle because it started to get hairy dueto high speed and short fuselage! I may be able to put a smaller prop on but I just decided to hang an SPE-43 I had laying around on it.

This would reduce the wing loading, making it an even better 3D'er.
Maybe something like a 32CC would be about right. I suspect that even the SPE-43 is too much for this plane.

I absolutely agree with you. I have a DA50 on mine...Had it on anyways, its now on a yak. But I was thinking maybe a Saito 180, but here's the problem. With my DA on it and all my radio gear pushed forward, my C.G. dead on with no additional weights. Now, if we were to put a smaller engine on it like the Saito, than I'll have to stack on the lead to balance it out. So its a lose lose situation as your wingloading will still be just as high. Also, the short fusleage makes it pitchy and the heigth of the fuse and the placement of the canopy messes with the knife edge characteristics. For textbook maneuvers, this plane is perfect! Flatspins, rolls, loops, etc it track flawlessly. One last tip! My wing FELL off during a flatspin and fortunately I was able to flatspin it at a slow rate all the way down with absolutely no damage! So I installed dowells on the wing and cotter pins clip it all together. I'll send you pics when I get a chance. This is just my two cents, correct me if I'm wrong on anything! Goodluck!

Wow I'm impressed!
I've seen the videos of the one wing landings before, but a flatspin landing with one wing!!!
I would have loved to have seen that, let alone video taped it.
Amazing!

So the SPE-43 does well on this plane?
Do you know the AUW with no fuel?
Thanks.

Ya, we call that the jet blue incident. The whole club got quiet when they seen my wing float to the ground. The only damage was the wheel pants because of the tall grass caught the pants while spinning into the ground. I know its hard to believe, I wish I had it on video; but I promise its not another fishing story! I'm just lucky cuz i'm an ace at crashing and kept my cool and stayed on the throttle! Plus I earned a few bad nicknames and reminders to check my wingbolts! The SPE sucked by the way. Its very hard to start..even after tweaking with the fuel mixture. But honestly, I hung her up after that incident. Kinda shook me up a little! I swear by my YAK-55's! AUW? Not sure. I'll post an empy weight as soon as I get relocated back to Tennessee. Long roadtrip from Cali starting Weds. Take care.

The new muffler arrived at work (funny how most of my packages arrive there
) so I put the plane back together Monday night, adding some weight to the front. I also swopped the heavy tailwheel I had fitted in the belief that the CG was too far forward.
Had the day off yesterday so went out to the local flying club (which is not where I usually fly).
The results were very convincing. The plane flew heaps better, with much less inclination to dip the nose on throttle up. Landing too were much better, this field has a much narrower strip than I am used to, and I haven't flown there for some months, yet I managed the best landings I have managed to date with this plane.
I intend to try a little extra weight up front as I think that there is still scope to move the CG a bit further forward, but in general I am happy with the outcome. After sitting around for a few months the MT57 took a little while to get going first, but thereafter started very easily. And even with the extra weight engine power was not a problem!!!

Hi Guys, i have just ordered an edge and the general concensus seems to be 50cc is heaps, i was considering a DLE 55 if that doesnt seem tobe to much?
I see you are flying in grafton..at the gliding club or the model club?
I generally flyat Coomera but would take the drive to c if i can pick up some pointers.
I take it most people seem to be runing slightly nose heavy cg to avoid any scary maiden flights?
cheers
Todd.

Even a 50CC engine seems to be too much for this plane. You could do well with something in the 40CC range.
However yes, the C.G. marks on the plane itself are way off. If you go by the marks we could be said to be running the plane VERY nose heavy.
But C.G. marks can be somewhat arbitrary...
I'm using a 2000mAh 4.8v NiMH ignition pack and two 2000mAh 6v NiMH receiver packs in parallel.
All are mounted on the engine "box" to move the C.G. forward.
For me, this put things where they belong.
I have a DSM2 Spectrum receiver and satellite antenna module all the way towards the back, but this is so light that it has no affect on the C.G.
However the Spectrum is well away from any interference from the engine and ignition this way and it has never thrown any frame loss errors.

Thanks for your help, i think i might flag the DLE55 and look for something smaller, i just dont want to be underpowered..
I havnt yet picked my plane up ( will get it this week) and wasnt sure if there was an allowance for exhaust cannisters? That will be the next headache, my local club is having problems with noise, so i have to get it below 96 db.
Do you normally seal along hinges to prevent flutter? I have heard a couple of horror stories recently and wondered if this was necessary on this plane.
Todd.

For reference;
I'm using a ZDZ 50CC on mine, and the plane has unlimited vertical at HALF throttle!
I'm typically flying at 1/4 throttle.
The upper half of the throttle range, doesn't buy me anything other than consuming more gas.

Does anyone have the CMP edge 540t with the red white and blue covering?
If so does this one have the same CG issue?
Also what is the tick mark u guys are talking about?
thx

No, mine is predominantly yellow and blue, but the cg marks are3 dots on each side of the fuse. They are located on the top of the fuse under the hatch. I dont know of any cg issues with the red one i assume it is an older model...but icould be wrong..
Have many people tried running an exhaust canister through the fuse under the fuel tank or is the norm just a basic pitts style of muffler straight out the bottom??

While this thread was started about the larger 50CC gasser...
You are advised to set your C.G. forward of what the manual shows.
CMP seems to be a bit too agressive with the rearward C.G. figures.
