RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
Had my Maiden flight last night. Plane flies great with the YS-63 and 12x6 APC prop. I may expirament with different props later but for now it's good to go

I am running the OS 55AX w/ 12x6 APC and had a few overheating problems at first which resulted in deadsticks. Once I figured out what was going on, I had to cut open the intake of the cowling quite a bit for cooling. Biggest problem is the cooling head doesn't stick outside the cowling. Anybody else with a 2 stroke 46/55 size have to do this as well? This plane flies great and can take a serious beating.

Good luck getting off of the ground on a grass strip. If you try it use the light weight set up with mini servos to keep the weight down.

A .40 may be pushing it... and TURBOPROP I am currently running a .46fx, and have not have any overheating issues. I did however cut a half circle in the bottom of the cowel to allow for optimum airflow. I'm using a 12-4 prop, which has proven to be perfect for 3D. At first harriers and hovers were very hard, but i recently moved the battery back, and it's really locked in. Hovers at about 90-95% throttle depending on the fuel and wind, and I can harrier it a few feet off the ground for the length of the runway... This plane is absolutely fantastic and makes me look like a good pilot too

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
hey,
I too am interested in this plane, but can't decide on the engine.
I'm stuck between a OS .55 ax, the OS .61 fx and the OS .75 AX
I hear a lot of good about the new ax-engines.
The intended flying-type is sporty (inverted, knife-edge, spins, stall-turns, snap-rolls, hover, cuban eights, ...) not really into 3D. But I do want to have enough power to pull out a hover.
Perhapse I should be looking at a 4-stroke, due to the angled installation??
Thanks for your advice.
Phil

Thibor,
Out of the three that you suggested I would probably go with the 61fx. simply because it will give you more of a pullout than the .55 (and certainly more than what i currently have). Personally I think a .75 would be total overkill and just add weight.
If I had the money, I would certainly go with the .82 four stroke out of O.S. I think that's the PERFECT combo for this plane, and it's what I will certainly get once I get the chance.
Have fun with the plane and you will certainly not regret purchasing it

I still check up on it every now and then to help out those who are interested.
I currently have all standard servos, which at 6V get about the same torque as the hs-225's. They are fine for normal flight, but tend to have a hard time under the extreme aerobatics. This all of coarse depends on your engine too... I am eventually going to get an 80 size four stroke, so I just ordered 4 HS-5485 HB's, which should be plenty. Hope this helps

To start with I am using a os 46 to see how the plane flies but, would like to upgrade to a Saito 81 in the future.
Thanks for your reply.

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
If you already have the servos, I could see just throwing those in there to start (thats what I did). But, I have a os. 46 fx in there now, and have already stripped a servo, and now one has developed a twitch in just a month and a half.
I would recommend getting at least 70oz/in servos if your buying new, since this will give you a little insurance power in case you upgrade engines. As I am sure you have seen, these are some pretty large surfaces (which is great for 3D!!!), but can certainly put some stress on your servos. Just my thought and I hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, I don't think the 225's will not stand up to the kind of flying i am going to be doing either. Like you said this plane has alot of control surface.
I guess I will be putting 635's in it.

A quick question about Hitec servos. I would like to run them on a 6 volt pack. Will that shorten the life of the servos or are they setup to run on the higher voltage?

Yes those 635's would be perfect.
As for 6v, I haven't noticed a difference in the life span. I have been running the same standard used hitecs in my 70 size mustang for over a year on 6V. To add to that I bought them used from a guy before that, so I don't think it makes any difference.

Well, I have quite a few flights on mine now. One observation...when I do a knife edge to the left.....the canopy flies off. So I need to do something here as I almost lost it the last time.
Also, someone else had one of these at the field and did not like how it flew. I was surprised. Ok, I have a Saito .56 in mine, I am using Mid sized servos all inside the cockpit, so I am pretty light. He has a big .91 2 stroke on his, big servos in the tail and overall heavier. His plane has an obvious "barbell effect" feel to it. I like mine better, but his does fly well. He just needs more experience with it.
Again, this is a great little airplane. Good throw around sport model, and very well engineered. (other than the canopy)

My gosh a .91 in this plane. You could fly a 2x4 with that much power.

That's true. Some folks I fly with have only one throttle setting. Wide ass open from start to finish. They fly on motor power not lift.

ya a .91 2stroke is abosolutely mad for this plane, both in power and weight... That could definatley affect the flight characteristcs, and not in a good way.

I'm all for having a little extra power but if someone puts a 91 or larger in this plane they're just adding a ton of additional weight. I'm flying with the 55AX and am very happy, although I know an 80 size FS would be best.

Just a question, did any of you guys put the rudder servo in the tail for balance?
