Default Phoenix Extra 300S 46

Folks:
I searched the fora and did not see my specific question;

I'm building a Phoenix Extra 300S, powered with OS FX .46. Engine mounted at proper distance from firewall to thrust washer. Cowl trimmed and ready to be mounted. NOW - when I tried to attach the (standard) muffler, 1) it does not clear the bottom of the fuse, and 2) looks as if it will require some trimming along the bottom of the cowl. Problem 2 is trivial, but I'm not sure what to do about problem #1.

Has anyone else run into this situation? How did you resolve it? (Pitts muffler, extension between exhaust port and muffler, etc)

Thanks

This is one that I'm sort of considering. How is the quality build wise (and also looks wise)? I've only seen one small picture of it (anyone got better pics of their extra?).

Supposedly these less expensive Phoenix ARF's are quite good for the price level. Hold true for this one?

Any thoughts about it's performance?

wjcalhoun let us know what you think when you've gotten it flying.

Cheers

i had this plane great performer with os 46. you have to watch for a snap however coming out of knife edge if you get bto slow.
dont ask me how i know! used slimline pitts muffler on mine and looked pretty scale too. enjoy it. andrew wisc.

Thanks for your input. Interesting about the knife edge. Was slower flight generally not as good as you'd hope from an Extra or similar plane?

Since posting, I found a grainy photo from which I could see that the ailerons and elevator are a bit narrower than on other Extras.

Made me wonder if this plane is effectively a bit more on the "sport plane" end of the spectrum and not as much a 3D/aeorobat as other Extras.

Is that impression more or less correct?

You'll need a Pitts muffler and a couple of extension hoses. That big honkin barrel muffler that comes with the engine won't get it here.
I found the Phoenix Extra 300 to be a bit on the flimsy side, especially in the nose area. I recommend beefing it up with some sheet balsa or light plywood.
I stalled mine when the wind reversed on approach at 3 feet altitude. When the nose kissed the ground the prop caught in the dirt and the torque twisted the nose right off just in front of the wing. It was a lot more robust once I rebuilt it.

Hey CloudSkipper. You hit the nail on the head. The Extra is not a good aerobatic plane. I meticulously measured, remeasured and then again when I built mine and it still doesn't track very well. I wish I had bought the Laser instead. I flew head to head with one and it blew my plane away. The next time my Extra has a mishap I think I'll just throw it away or maybe set it on fire.
