RE: BME Edge?
I'm happy to here the manual will be ready soon because My Edge is on its way! I'll let everyone know when it gets here; first impressions, photos, etc. I have all the items ready 3.2 FPE, 5645's elevator and ailerons, 5945 rudder, 2000mah 6v NiMh and pcm receiver(Futaba), 3.5" Dave Brown Ultimate spinner and Rocket City hardware. I will try to post as the construction moves along.:D
|
RE: BME Edge?
I am glad to here BME is shipping the Edges!
Someone in RCU has already gave me that comment on the Hitec servos: The 5945 are Fine they are the Coreless ones...good price and almost half of the power consumption of the 5645. Is it a problem to use 5645? The 5646s cost are very attractive to me! |
RE: BME Edge?
The 5645 are fine I use them for years with no problems.
|
RE: BME Edge?
Ditto on the 5645's I also have used them for two years and no problems. I use 5625's, 5945's and JR8411's if there is a power drain difference its not enough that I can see or be worth thinking about. With my 33% Ultimate I have four 5645's on the ailerons, two 5945's on the elevator and a 5735 on the rudder. I have a 2700 mah Nimh in it and can fly eight 10 min flights in a day and have power left if I wanted to fly more. I'm trying a JR8611 on the rudder of my 33% Extra so far so good. Will most likely change my Ultimate's rudder over to one to save weight. An once here an once there adds up! BTW the Extra has Four 5625's on the ailerons.
|
RE: BME Edge?
The 5645's are fine for this plane... plenty of torque, etc... especially if you go 6 volt... You'll need more on the rudder tho I'd think... Maybe 1 5945 there or better yet the new 5995TG if available by the time you need it... otherwise the JR 8611 would be an excellent choice...
|
RE: BME Edge?
I'm going to use my 5945 for the rudder that I have from a airplane that was sold. If I'm not satisfied I'll switch to a 8611 or the new Hitec 5995TG. Most likey the Hitec when they come out to try one.

RE: BME Edge?
Maudib, did you receive the Edge manual?
|
RE: BME Edge?
Not yet... :(
|
RE: BME Edge?
I think its safe to say that my Edge will be here this coming Wednesday. It was sent out 7-22 FedEx ground. After Max sent the tracking numbers I think I'm safe[8D]. FedEx better not drop it off a loading dock[:@].
|
RE: BME Edge?
Hi guys any of you use DHL shipping before as I have never heard of it , so now it might take longer than I thought as of FedEx it would be at my door on monday.

Hey Ronk1 and all...
Max sent an e-mail and is sending the manual on CD... I should have it in a couple days, so hang tight... it will get online withing minutes of receipt. He also sent me this pic for the website... it's like Santa's workshop!!! :) |
RE: BME Edge?
a trash bag in the pic, hes preping the planes already for what is in store for whats many many flights down the road.
I got an email, my edge is on its way for sure!!!! |
RE: BME Edge?
As soon as somebody gets there hands on one of these baby's would you please weight the plane ? I really am curious as to how much it wieghts.
Chad |
RE: BME Edge?
Just got the CD with the updated Edge manual on it...
It is now posted on their site... go and get it! http://www.bmeaircraft.com People ought to be receiving their Edge's any days now... let's get ready to rumble! :) |
RE: BME Edge?
Maudib, thanks for getting the manual up so fast:D. My Edge should be here today[&:]. When you received the info did it have the firewall to drive plate dimension? I do not see it in the manual. If not I will try and call Max and post it.
|
RE: BME Edge?
Nope... that's all the info I got...
But simply sliding the cowl into approximate position and measuring will get you your dimension... I'm also sure it has some leeway fore and aft in order to close fit the cowl to the spinner... So you ought to have it today eh? Well don't be shy... get some picks up this evening and we won't take no for an answer... mine could be here any day too... -David |
RE: BME Edge?
mine should arrive today to I hope!!!
|
RE: BME Edge?
It looks like the firewall to drive plate will be 6.5"+-. From building other Edges it would make sense but until I have it in front of me ? Throws to start with, low rates a same angle (not measurement) as a Hangar 9 (120 size), High rates to my liking. I do not have a problem with this. What I do not understand is why Max would not have recommended low rate amounts. Think of the person that buys this thinking "I have my Goldberg Tiger II mastered". With out help from someone that has an large Edge trouble is at there feet!:(

Well I got lucky... lookie, lookie!
I took some pics of it next to my buddy's WH Edge... It is lighter for sure... good construction and excellent finish. I weighed it "quick-assembled" with all the extras inside the fuse... Right at 10 lbs... perhaps 1/2 ounce over... So YEAH! We are talking 15.5 lbs or so all up is easily doable!!!! YEE HAW! I'm so excited I can't see straight. Only problem is... I have way too many projects/jobs to get done before I can start, so I'll defer the first flight reports to someone else.... :( Check these pics out... Mine's the teal scheme and I like it alot... As you can see in the pics... the WH has a little more wing area, but not too aweful much. Overall the WH seems a smidge larger. With the wingloading the same, the real difference will be the 2 lbs less weight on a 50cc engine... that's a ton more power. Overall very impressed. Two things I don;t like.. the tailwheel seems monsterous for this plane (will go carbon fiber anyway) and the wheel collars use set screws with slots not hex... and one was stripped already (the threads in the collar) Other than that... top notch ARF. |

I do like the canopy of the 540T over the one-seater 540... but it's a minor personal thing.
And as Ronk reported... the correct distance from firewall to front of drive shaft plate is 6 5/16"... tho not set in stone... in other words you have leeway to move forward as this distance places the cowl with 1.5" overlap of the fuse... If for some reason balance seems to be an issue, I'll move my engine out as much as 1" to compensate. Looks like there is just enough room for a canister install too... |
RE: BME Edge?
Boy, in the pictures the BME looks quite a bit smaller than the Wild Hare. Maybe it's just the angle of the pictures.
|
RE: BME Edge?
maybe there is a differ between the size of the Edge 540 and the 540t's fus size in the real planes, ill have to do some looking around.
|
RE: BME Edge?
OK, here they are,
Edge 540 w/s 22.4' Length 20.7' Edge540T w/s 25.2' Length 22.8' Not enough to make that much of a differ. |
RE: BME Edge?
It may very well be the scheme differences too...
While it seems noticably smaller in some of the pics, in person the difference is harder to tell... I took the following measurements as a comparison which actually show the BME Edge to be larger in most cases: ___________________________________ I measured both Edges from tip of rudder to front of cowl : The WH Edge is approx. 73.5" The BME is approx: 75" _____________________________ The widest point on the cowl on the WH is 9" and the BME is 9.5" The width at the front former on the WH is 8.5" and the BME is 9" _____________________________ The stabs at their largest dimension: WH is 15 1/8" wide by 11" deep BME is 15" wide by 11.75" deep |
RE: BME Edge?
Good research Dago Red...
That explains why the BME touts their Edge 540 as 30% scale and the WH is touted as a 28%... Still as shown in my measurements, the BME Edge is about the same size as the WH, with the exception of the wing chord and tip... This equates to about 75 sq in. less... but looks like maybe 2 lbs lighter... At this early point in the game, I'd have to say I'm glad I moved off the WH for the BME... Now if she flies good and holds up to the rigors of 3D flying.... [8D] |
RE: BME Edge?
its an wierd, the WH looks bigger in the pics, but the BME is bigger, maybe its the height as well. Maybe the WH just gained a few pounds when it got its pic taken.
|
RE: BME Edge?
I think the 3rd pic in my first post wingtip to wingtip shows them very close in size... and seems to look the most "real" when compared to how they look in person...

OK here's the red one! Hits- packaging, parts fit, good construction, weight is 10 Lbs with all that comes over all very nice. Misses ditto on the hardware Maudib and you can't tell from the photo but the white on the cowl is yellowed but a little auto paint will fix that.:D
|
RE: BME Edge?
I figured that's why we hadn't heard from you Ronk1... ;)
Build on hoss... build on... After some calcing it looks like somewhere between 15.5-16 lbs... Some may build it heavy at 16.5... I'm aiming for the low end if at all possible... (of course) :) |
RE: BME Edge?
Hey Bodymann... I see you lurking this thread....
You got one comin'? ;) |
RE: BME Edge?
MAN, you guys are amking me jelous, I cant wait to get that edge in. I got the red one. looks good.
|
RE: BME Edge?
The WH rudder looks bigger than BME?
Imagine what you can do with a DA50 in a 15.5-16lbs plane ! It will be a 3D monster guys!! |

All of you that jest received or are going to the BME Edge. The covering below the wing that goes at a 45ยบ to the bottom has jest enough to cover. Do not use a heat gun before you check it out and make sure the edge is sealed. It took me some time to correct the problem. An other 1/4" of covering would have been nice. Other then that all is well. --------------------------------------------------As for the rudder, the BME's is taller and Wild Hare is longer. Why; who knows but the BME's is proportionally the same as a 35% Carden.
|
RE: BME Edge?
Ronk1
What kind of covering does BME Edge have? Monokote, Ultracote, Chinesecote?? |
RE: BME Edge?
Good heads up there Ronk1,
I see that they did cut very little excess as it wraps under the fuse at that angle... I can see why, as it's a tough spot to cut a straight line on... I would have wrapped the side convering onto the bottom stringer and cut it on the inside of the stringer.... then covered the bottom and trimmed to the outside of the stringer so I had a full 1/4" lap... While not a "biggie", report it to Max.. I'll do likewise... Yeah the rudder is narrower at the top than the WH, but again, with maybe 1.5 lbs less weight, it wouldn't need as much rudder... ;) Everything looks well made and designed... plenty of room for installation... here are a few detail observations. I was wrong about the cowls ability to slide back and forth a full 1" or so... the design has the blind nuts installed for the cowl already behind the F1 former. So you need to lap at least that much + a bit for attachment... Unless you change the cowl mounting method/location of blind nuts... which wouldn't be a hard thing to do... For those who would liek a different scheme, the trim scheme is applied on a solid white plane. A person could easily remove it and have a white plane with the hatch matching the second color... red or teal. The wings, stabs and fuse sides could then be customized to your hearts content... I kinda like it tho. Wheels are tough but very lightweight. Gear seems nice and light but adequate and is prepainted white with two screws holes drilled for securing pants. Pants are lightweight and ply-supported/predrilled for the axle. The plane comes with hingepoints and predrilled holes. The holes are even squared to allow the hingepoint to seat properly. The canopy is pre-painted and has a medium tint. The wingtube fit is a snug but not annoyingly tight fit. Covering was well applied with only a small wrinkle or two. The wings and stabs fit against the fuse nicely with no gaps to speak of. The cowl is just the right "heft" for this plane... not too thin but not too heavy either... it is painted nicely... I only noticed a couple very small pinholes on the bottom. The landing gear plate/block looks a little fragile in design, but I notice that it's been pinned in the front (and probably on the sides too) and then tristocked so it should be fine. All the hardware is U.S., but the wheel collars must go... A set of good DuBro's for $1.89 will solve that problem. Look's like 3/16" Hardpoints are large ply plates... I like that it allows me to tweak the position of the control hardware. All-in-all a really nice offering. Duuble boxed and packed well with additional foam peanuts. Comes in two boxes. |
RE: BME Edge?
It's not the first two... :)
But it does seem of good quality (not that thin crap that tears when you look at it cross-eyed).... It has a slight texture to the inside... glossy as Monokote. ORIGINAL: Scoubidou Ronk1 What kind of covering does BME Edge have? Monokote, Ultracote, Chinesecote?? |
RE: BME Edge?
:eek:Hi; I been looking atthe Extreem Flight YaK 87"-WS there smaller one is great plane. Been watching this BME post. It look like this is going to be good flying plane. I have WH EDGE with a DA-50 just a great flying plane. My WH came in at 16.2 lbs. Looking forward to see how they fly:)

Airo-RCU
Can you give us a quick hardware list describing how you can weight 16.2lbs on your WH Edge please and how does it balance to the CG? When did you buy it? It would help to select the right hardware stuff for the BME Edge. (Out of topic) I am flying the Extreme Flight Edge 540T for 2 months and it's amazing to see what can do this small plane!:D Inverted climb flat spin at full throttle with an OS46FX and tower muffler and hover at half throttle... Futhermore, Chris give a first class customer service! |
RE: BME Edge?
Ditto on that... I have the EF Mini 3D, Profile Edge and 68" Yak now (awesome planes) and a 87" Yak coming.
Simply top notch stuff all around. Airo... 16.2 lbs is amazing. Mine was 17 1/4 (give or take an oz.) and I built it light... no wheel plants... lighter gear & wingtube... many are reporting 17.5+... I can only assume you used carbon fibre stuff... If a person wanted to go to that expense with the BME, I think they'd get it close to 15 lbs... |
RE: BME Edge?
My WH Edge with ZDZ 60 came out at 18.5 lbs built stock and without wheel pants.
