Wrong, we at USAF are tougher than the sissy Marines

Us US Navy men are tougher than all you other candy as**s put together...
Gimme a break! I was in the Navy AND the Air Force, and we're way too smart to do the fighting ourselves.

Send the Marines!
And while ya'll are gee-gawkin and backslappin.. an Army Ranger would have quietly shot some CA onto it and moved on...

I don't know about any of them. We got the remains after there was no blood left. [:'(]

If you have to say that then you don't have a clue.

.. A Co. 1/75th, 78-81... well.. that was 31 years ago.. so would have been badder...

I agree, we were bad back then, but.. I do have to give my modern day brothers a thumbs up, very tough operational tempo nowadays.. from the Army Times;

"The Army's 75th Ranger Regiment is the only fighting force in the U.S. military that has been continuously in combat since war began after the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. At any given time, one of its three battalions has been in Iraq or Afghanistan."

Am clueless about that as well, think I'll keep it that way.. an odd remark to make during some light banter between former military members... am sure a lot of us have 'seen things'.. but its a bit out of context for RCU jabber... hang tough...

You stole my thunder, Radical, and I thank you for that. I was going to suggest that we keep to the subject of the thread, but, as some did, I got caught up in the banter. So, again, thanks for reminding us to keep it on subject.

Even some of the most careful modelers have been bit by a prop. It's bound to happen when so many people are playing with toys that resemble a lawnmower without a guard. Most adult toys kill people, careful or not. At best, you can significantly reduce the chances of someone getting hurt while playing with the dangerous toys.

Up we go into the wild blue yonder........<div>Oops, I'm sorry, back to the subject. If you don't want to get hurt you have to follow your pre-flight routine every time. You will get hurt when you skip steps or cut corners, that usually happens when you are in a hurry to get up in the air or when people distracts you w conversation when you are busy stating up. So do your friends at the field a favor if he is in a pre routine SHUT UP</div>

I sliced my finger on my first ever RC flight, while trying to start the engine.

To matters worse I didn't have any band aids on hand, but toilet paper and speed tape.....
I was lucky, it could have been a lot worse.

damn OD, thats nasty... wishing you a speedy recovery! Will be back in air in no time. I sympathize, been there done that. Was reversing servos on an electric, wasnt thinking, left the engine plugged up, servo 1 reverse, servo 2 reverse, servo 3 reverse... BAM! Instant full throttle, caught me across the back of the hand. 2 surgeries and a year of physical therapy to be able to get back on the transmitter.. I have a very complete RCU thread here; [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4762505/anchors_4762505/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#4762505]Prop Bitten[/link]

So hang tough, it looks ugly, going to hurt like hell getting it back, but it'll be ok. Thanks for sharing and hope it prevents someone else from doing the same.

I have been flying RC models since 1972 and have seen a lot of blood, much of it mine. I promote the use of Engine Starting Safety Stands which is one way to add safety to our hobby. I am suggesting to the moderator to show the graphic photos of the injury, that he deleted earlier. Some people need to see more gore to understand what can happen. The shock of seeing what can happen is a great teacher. At our club, safety is always on the table.

Physical Therapy?!? Wow. Mine wasn't that bad, 18 stitches. Happened May 1st, 2011. It's healed mostly but some of it still feels numb.

I got immediate service at the emergency room. The sight of oozing blood dripping on the floor get's 'em going really quick! My high-deductable insurance didn't pay for any of it. Ended up paying over $800 out of my own pocket.

The lesson learned was this: Take the prop off if you're going to power on your electric plane inside the house!

Heck yeah! Either the prop comes off or the engine is disconnected. Am flying a 50cc equiv. in electric nowadays, so you can bet I'm all kinds of focused when working on it! If a Park480 swinging an APC tore my hand up like it did, I don't even want to think what my current motor would do if I misstepped. Glad to hear you've healed up.

These pics are very graphic, but I hope they serve as a reminder that these aircraft are not toys. I was at the field yesterday. Had a great time flying, even though my PT 19 wing broke in half on landing. Guess I should've inspected it more closely during the rebuild. Anyway decided to fly my morris hobby profile with the OS 55 AX. Got the enigine started and instead of walking around and disconnecting the glow driver from behind the plane I reached around the prop from the front. I got complacent and got bit hard. Good news is that, the prop basically filleted my thumb, missing the tendon. It took 60 stitches . Be careful, pay attention even with the smallest of props and planes. Take the time to be safe!!
Not fun!!! Get healed up ole timer... you'll be flyin again before ya know it!!

I too have had the prop expeience. Mine was through the front of an A200 twin with carbon 21x27 fiber prop on alky. Damage was so severe it required a helicopter flight, major surgery and months of rehab. No knucle, destroyed knucle, stretched tendens fractured fingers, some skin grafs and all is 50% normal.

Here is what I learned. You better have a safe routine and follow it. Dont develope a set of "risky" routines. Make sure they are safe with built in safe procedures. Then follow them every time. Im not giving a free pass to complacency at all, but many will get that way unfortunately, and the safe routine will act as a fairly good buffer.

You can bet I double check every prop/hand clearance prior to removing any ignitor.

With regard to removal of the plug ignitor, I was taught to do so from behind, and that's what I do. I also teach students to do this. The only thing I do from the front of the engine is start the thing. All else is done from behind.

Unfortunately, the injury I experienced was with an electric, and that was because I put the prop on and did the initial motor start process (new plane process) without even thinking the transmitter throttle setting was reversed. Five stiches.

Live and learn. That will NOT happen again to me.

Well the plug heater (we call them hot shots )...........Adjusting the needle valve..........and guys tuning carbs with a screw driver puts you in a dangerouse location.Remote needle valve placement helps get the fingers farther away from the prop.A tall hot shot helps on some of the smaller engines..........A lot of guys use the short hot shots and you are very close to the prop taking one off the glow plug.

Someone could make a pretty good profit if they came up with a compact little remote device where the hot shot could be placed farther from the prop like the simple remote needle valve.

BIGMIG

Not a lot of room to play with................

I did that too with a 350 watt motor with an apc 13x4 prop. It was my lucky day since the motor rotation was backwards, so the plane took off away from me. The cardboard box that the plane was resting on was converted to confetti. No stitches for me thattime, but a new pair of underwear was required.

I cannot even imagine what that must have been like. I see on forums various guys state, "You just need a pair and crank it like you mean it." What a bunch of goofballs. Macho-ness will fall like a hot potato when limbs get chewed up and blood starts flying. I have not met anyone that did not regret it when they got hurt after they knew it could have been avoided.

Last year I at one of our clubs a plane with around a 65cc go high idle and started to climb the man's legs! I think he stuck his hand in the engine to attempt to keep the plane off of him. He was so sure his finger was gone. Fortunatly he only dislocated knuckles, some bad cuts, and road-rashed both of his legs. That could have been ten times worse than it was. It could have severed the artery in his legs.

These planes are spinning props that are like spinning meat cleavers. A little extra safety and caution can go a long way. If I am in the least bit uncomfortable because of people around me or a possible distraction, I DO NOT crank any of my larger planes unless I can fully concentrate on what I am doing.

Thanks for the post. I think it will certainly help others.
