*grin* I, with 2 of those Enya's, didn't have a bad one, but I DID have setup problems.
I bought 2 of them brand new and both only lasted about a half
of season and locked up(trowed the rod). Enya has one of the
best warranties in the world 5 Years if i remember it right.
Some ss40 did have rod problems. I sent them back for repair
and they took care of it under the warranty have been
running great every sense. Its now been 2 years

Ho ho ho!! You're getting there!

Sounds like you're still over-priming at startup. Just bring the fuel, when you turn the prop by hand, up TO the carb...that'll be all you really need.

Hint: I had 2 setup probs with my enya's, both related to the exhaust, believe it or not. I was tired of having the loudest plane at the field (ineffective stock muffler) so I bought a Davis Product's super-quiet muffler. It looks like a cannon - big and black. And then it wouldn't run right - rich as all get-out. I had to (my only engine mod EVER) slightly drill out the airbleed hole (after removing the bleed-adjustment screw, thankyouverymuch) to allow more air in there and lean the idle mix - the muffler created more backpressure, forcing more fuel in than the original bleed-hole was capable of mixing. Your muffler-exhaust redirector *could* be adding to your back-pressure, doing the same thing as that big ol' Davis muffler. Leave it off for now and just clean the plane more. This is a known thing, by the way, with all engines.....add more exhaust pipe? Adds more exhaust pressure and 2-strokes don't like that.

The other one was a cheap-o Pitts style muffler for my Goldberg Cub (yes - a Goldberg Cub, either full- or clipped-wing, will fly perfectly on a bushed .40 - AND floats, too!). It had two exhaust outlets - yep...REDUCED the back-pressure to the point that the tank wouldn't pressurize...this took many dead-stick landings to figure out. Heh - I stuck a dowel in one of the exhaust pipes...fixed it.

Sounds like you're still too rich. 'Tweaking' the high-speed isn't something you put off until you 'have time'. It's something you do every time you go to the field! Leave the needle where it was last time, open 1/4 turn or so, start 'er up, then lean down to match today's weather conditions. It takes oh, about 30 seconds.....and is a normal 'first-flight-of-the-day' thing to do.

If it's idling OK, but still burbling and spitting when you give it throttle, lean the idle bleed out some more...not much..turn it in 1/8 turn or so, then see if it will still run and idle. Normally, with this engine, a rich idle will be good and sound OK, but guess what? Hit the throttle and it croaks..... lean out the idle just a touch, restart, etc. As long as the carb barrel is closing as I described earlier, you'll set your idle speed with your radio, and it should die when you pull the throttle and trim all the way back. Long-term idling as you described? It's a recipe for disaster and stalling at inopportune times. Start it, tweak it (first flight), taxi out and launch.

I would fly at 1/2 throttle a LOT - but that was after the engine was set correctly. do your fine-tune tweaking at home - it's frustrating to do at the field when you'd rather be flying, and you might take off with something 'not quite right' just to fly...then dead-stick it in.

And yeah - for a bushed engine, they're plenty strong. Mine, after 3 years of casual flying, would still hover my Balsa USA Stik .40 (the perfect trainer) at 4.5 pounds on a 10x5 prop for 10-15 seconds or so...it wouldn't accelerate up like a 3D plane, but it would hold it. Good enough for me!

Surface radios are supposed to be on a different set of channels - 75MHz or 27MHz, generally. But a Walmart toy is gonna hvae cheap, and possibly frequency-sloppy, radio gear. Almost any radio will twitch madly if the transmitter is off. Once the Tx is on, however, all weirdness should disappear... If the guy and kid show up again, invite 'em over, tell 'em what's going on and:

#1 Tell 'em it's a recipe for disaster to bring stuff like that near an 'official' R/C field
#2 Test it!! Have 'em in the pits (tell the other pilots what's afoot) and see what happens - show the perps what they're doing to you guys!

LOL...yea..I tried to be nice. I live in an area where many if not most of the people are a bit bitter. More so the women it seems. The guy was cool about it, but the women gave me lip. And I was nice! I should have walked over screaming and yelling...squirting nitro about the place. But I have at least a bit of class.

Yea, I do actually tune it each time I am out at the field. But that was last year, and I barely flew then! This year, well ...I could NEVER get it tuned at home. Once I had someone look at it, I finally got it started. Next thing I knew I was flying it with a trainer person. Then, next again..I was solo'n and tuned it then. It really seems like it wont start unless I have it rather lean, then I have to richen it after it runs a few secs ...THEN lean it out..and back off about 1000rpm. Sigh. Not like my bros OS 40 la. Fire it up in two swings, turn the needle...ok..it stopped increasing in whine...decrease a bit. Hold model in air. Ok, takeoff.

I have noticed that it looks like some oil or fuel is going back into the tank. When you are done flying you should 'expel' left over fuel and not put it back into the jug o' fun correct? (new fuel)

My engine is loud. The muffler seems to have very little to no effect. Eh, I like the sound of a loud engine anyway. It at least doesn't have that hollow sound RC airplanes used to have. It sounds nicer. Or maybe it's just music to my ears and noise pollution to the 50+ people walking along the trail that sunny evening yesterday.

I still remember my first landing. Lady decided that the 5+ football field size field near the rc airfield wasnt enoug. She wanted to walk her dog onto the airfield. Needless to say...well I won't finish the rest. Imagine two dogs rushing up to you on your first solo flight also. Also needless to say...well...I won't finish the rest.

I love dogs...it's people I sometimes dislike. [:-]

Floats eh? Sounds fun. They are available for my particular model. HMMMM I have a retrieval boat also.

do your fine-tune tweaking at home -
Yea right. I'm jinxed. The day my model was flying and running its best. I brought it home afterwards to run more fuel through it to 'break it in' and I couldnt keep it running and also had the worst time trying to get it started. SIGH x2

Your muffler-exhaust redirector *could* be adding to your back-pressure, doing the same thing as that big ol' Davis muffler.
That's not a problem. Mine flew off on my last flight, and apparently I forgot to pick it up. HA (cough ..sigh)

Sounds like the field needs some skull-and-crossbones No Trespassing signs at its perimeter...seriously. I argued with a guy who was flying a kite with his grandson... "Sir - this is private property." "Sonny - it's a big field." "Sir - if a plane hits you or your grandson, at minimum you'll have to go to the hospital." "Son - I'm gonna fly this kite." "Sir - I mean you'll DIE if one of these hits you." "THAT'S IT, SON - you can't talk like that in front of my innocent grandson. I'm calling the police." "Thank you, Sir - I don't have a cellphone. When they get here, tell them to come see me."

*grin* The soul of politeness. The police helped him off the property. He was flying the kite over the local power wires, too.........woulda died one way or the other. Maybe from skull implosion - obviously had nothing in there...the vacuum would've killed him.

I was a little confused...let's talk 'in' and 'out' instead of 'lean' and 'rich'. First start - prime by opening the carb, hand-twisting the prop and stopping when the fuel reaches the carb. Start. (Notice there was no ifs in that statement *grin*). Open the throttle all the way - turn the needle valve IN, listening to the engine get leaner and increase in RPM until the RPM's sag. Restore the RPM's by turning the valve OUT, then maybe one more click OUT to ensure a slightly-rich setting. That's it.....done. What prop are you using? I used everything from a 10x4,5,6 and 7 to 11x3,4,5.

Fuel - I used 10% nitro, never worrying about oil content, all summer. If it was on the LHS shelf, I'd use it. During the winter I'd go to 15% nitro. And, when pumping the tank dry, I'd pump it right back into the can - screw it. I DID always use a filter on the pump line - so whatever crap started in the can would stay in the can when I reverse-pumped the fuel back into it.

Run the engine dry at the end of flying - simply pop the line off the carb... Then empty the tank with the pump.

AHHHH TMI TMI,... (KABOOM...head explodes)

No seriously though, thanks for the tips. However I believe I am doing almost everything except for the running the engine dry thing...AND

Question: I have been pulling the full up to the carb on my own without prior instruction because I found it doesn't flood and is easier to start...even this year with all its finiky..ness...es. However, lately when I open her up (with the glo plug off of course) and cover the carb and pull the fuel up...it doesn't. I have to go around a few more times. Almost like its fubar'd. But I checked the clunk, clean. Checked the lines..clean...replaced the lines. Still does it. Any ideas as to why it is not moving as easy. I have also noticed the engine is tougher to pull around the compression stroke with is PROBABLY because I forgot to pinch the line and run the engine dry. DOH. Did that last year, forgot this year.

Nice story about the police and the old guy. I feel bad and evil when I have to yell at anyone. Inside I want to implode their head with my hands, but when I come up to do the actual talking...I just can't bring myself to be blatently rude and angry. If at most, I'll be firm. Something about meeting someone for the first time, makes me not want to cause them or myself stress unless of course they disregard my statements and do not heed my warnings or comments. But if someone were to really screw up, like say...let their dog chew on the edge of my wingtips...well then we have problems. Fluffy will be looking at the owner from the backseat of my car as I speed away. MUHAHA. COUGH...twitch...COUGH...ok...i'm fine now.

You should see the park I fly at. It's huge. And it is in a run down old steel down...small old one..one of the first really. 3 large baseball fields. A deck hockey rink. A field behind the pits of the airfield about the size of 5 football fields. And a walking trail that goes around it all. But for some reason, they drive over to our little 10 parking spot airfield, park their car...and start walking from there...or sit at the tiny pavillion we have and 'watch' the rcers. Once I get a bit more confident, I will enjoy those people. I want more people in the hobby. But at the same time, I want my airtime. The kids in this area don't have much to look up to. Especially sicne the mothers are all magnetically attracted toward anything with 5+ tatooes and a vehicle purchased by the decibal. Needless to say, it's nice to see a kids eyes light up when you pull a big red plane out of the car and tell them it will actually fly.

I dont have much hope for flying in colder weather Rob. Last year it was running fine, but we couldn't budge it in late october when it was only about 55 out. My bros OSla40 ran great ...of course. *grumble*

OH, another question. I'm using a 10x6 prop. I'm sure that is what the engine/plane manu called for. What's the difference? What options do I have. Is it like tires? The higher the number the better the handling but the slower and less mileage you get or ??? hehe.

Huh - won't pull the fuel through...huh..... The fuel should move positively and manfully through hose, responding to turns on the prop. OK - your tank's centerline is even with the carb? If not, make it so...a little above or below is OK, as long as it's only a little. Sounds like a new problem, though.

Do I remember right? The carb is held into the engine with a screw from the side? Make sure that screw's tight, but don't bend the carb body itself...tightly-snug is a good way to approach it. Same with the carb itself - it should be a snug slip-fit into the engine. Long as you're at it, unscrew the carb-holding screw and pull the carb out, making sure of your snug slip-fit Like good gloves...

The spray-bar.....check your engine manual or look it up on the web or something and make SURE that the hole in the spray-bar is in the middle of the carb throat and pointed in the same direction as the book shows. This, I THINK, is down into the engine, but don't quote me. In other words, you should be able to poke a pin (don't do this) through the cross-drilled hole in the spray bar and it should be able to go straight into the engine.....I THINK. Check with the book...

The position of that hole, when the engine is running, is the key to how the engine will use vacuum to draw fuel - or not, as the case may be. I felt stoopid - had a new Fox .35 Stunt C/L engine that wouldn't run worth a s**t. I messed with it for weeks, just knowing that it was me, then an old C/L guy (LHS owner) took a glance at it and said the spraybar's hole (for that engine) is supposed to be *across* the airflow into the carb - in other words, sideways.

We're probably worrying about it too much, eh? It's gonna be something stupid. Anyway - back to the not-drawing-fuel issue: There's really only 2 reasons it won't draw - either the engine's played (not likely, since you're having trouble getting it past compression), or there's an airleak somewhere........... and more dots ....................

Fuel lines - at the tank (both pressure and fuel-supply lines), the lines should be tightly sealed with a short piece of fuel line over the fitting...d'you know about that technique? MUCH better than twisted wires..... Same at the engine itself - the fuel line should be tightly clamped to the nipple with another piece of fuel line.... The carb should fit tightly...if you're concerned in the least, use some silicone or make a gasket or something to seal the join around the engine/carb........ tight wins.

When I say we're worrying too much, my Enya's were non-thought engines. Just prime, light and flip...all done. Hint: a can of old-fashioned lighter fluid. Squirt a couple drops into the carb - it'll fire Guaranteed

Props are listed as 10x6, 9x6, 9x5, etc. It's diameter/pitch, in that order. A bigger engine will spin a bigger prop. The more pitch, the 'faster' the prop is. One revolution of the prop will 'bite' further into the air if it's got more pitch. The correlation is just like a car - higher numerical rear-end ratio, the more stumps you can pull. The lower the pitch on the prop, the more stumps you can pull...it 'gears the engine down'. There are acceptable ranges for all engines... my .15's would fly anything from a 8x3 to 9x4. Too little load and you'll overrev the engine...too much load and it won't wind up properly....

ugh, yea I think so. I am not really sure how I should check it. But if you mean the hose is pretty level...yea. I purposely even shortened it to make a straighter piece looking thing connecting from the tank to the carb.

The other stuff you speak of is all gibberish to me. I am not versed in your speak All I know is how it came out of the box, I installed it like that. And it DOES fit snug. Even has a little rubber thingy to make sure of it.

Hmmm. Air leak eh? If my brain didnt hurt atm, I would go fiddle with it and check it out. I dont think I do but not sure. I am almost sure there is nothing wrong with the gastank. ANd as far as the engine goes...who knows. Hmmmmmmmm

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Hey I checked out a new airfield today. Pretty , plain. Few picknic tables setup...but the runway goes long ways from the pits...strange. And it is on top of a hill (mountain) and eheh...curves. I sure not all the landings are pretty because of this. But currently it is as wide as my current runway is long! Sooo I bet I could find a spot there. It is also void of ANY foot traffic. YOu have to get a key to the gate to get up there. Another nice thing. I'm hoping when I inquire however, it isn't an anal retentive airfield where they will complain if I bring my family up to watch or hang out. I live near one of those now. Everyone flies the same sport plane. Everyone does nothing but figure 8s. Every engine starts in 2 flicks. And everyone stands in the same 3 spots when flying. BORING. They are rude to spectators (but in their defense they get alot), and I've never met what I would consider ONE normal person up there. Looks like a star trek convention which mingled far to long with a 'how to be odd and insane' convention.

No really.

Heh - worst runway I ever used was in Thomaston, CT. It gets used a lot and isn't impossible, but you have to know the field. Trees on two sides (one end and across from the pits) BIG rocks on the pits-side before the plane gets there and a hump in the middle. The hump is exasctly perfect for when you're doing a full-stall 3 pointer and, just as the plane stalls (and you're brushing the grass with your wheels) the field drops away *sigh*

eheh sounds like a 'nice' runway

2 more solos yesterday. Bout 1/2 tanks run through each time. 2nd one I did I nice loop with the sun hitting it and lighting it up real nice toward the later evening. Looked great. First landing, wing tip scuffed up a bit..prop took a TINY little ding on the edge. 2nd, I landed it perferctly down the middle..but bounced 3 times lol. I did a pace count and came up with 9 x 60 which comes to about 30x180 feet.(runway length)

The engine is running ok. Still not sure where I should be on rpm's cause when I go to full lean, I back it off but don't notice much decrease in rpm till I have turned it an seemingly large amount back. Still choking on takeoff for a couple seconds..but it holds the full range of rpms. LIke I said I would like to run this thing rich especially for the remainder of the year. It deserves it.

Still starting backwards! Took me 8 on/offs before it would fly forward hehe. And the first start is taking like 20 flicks. It's hard to explain to someone that doesn't understand or maybe doesn't get into things like I do. But I can 'feel' my engine and how it is working now a bit. I'm sure in time this thing will become like a member of the family ya know?
