Have trouble getting this to idle. When I lower the throttle(about the opening that I use to start the engine) it dies. Air bleed screw 2 turns out. Needle 2 turns out. I've run through a qt. of 10% so it should be well broken in. Moving the throttle up and down during the break-in process. Any suggestions? Far too old to be chasing this. Can't see flying this if I can't slow the plane down to land.

First, Have you peaked the high speed needle and then backed off a few clicks? And have you confirmed that when you look in the carburetor with the throttle all the way back, that the throttle barrel is slightly open (1/16" or so)? If so, when you go to full throttle, and then lower the throttle back to idle, does it die immediately or speed up and die, or slow down further and then die?

New at this. Not sure what you mean by "peaked the high speed needle." The setting that I used was the recommended one in the manual. I have it on a test stand so I have complete control of the throttle barrel -completely open or closed. I'll start it back up and let you know the throttle barrel opening when it dies.

A simple trick that works well on any of the OS FP's or LA's (bleeder carb engines) of any size for the initial mid range adjustment is to insert a dressmakers pin or a large safety pin opened up into the bleed hole directly in front of the carb, with the adjustment screw backed well out. Now while holding the pin just screw the adjustment screw back in until you can just lightly feel it on the pin. Pull the pin out and you are done.
Recommend you get hands on help from an experienced glow engine operator.

The reason for 2 turns out was that there was a sheet in the box that the engine came in as well as the one sheet instruction manual. Couldn't get the engine to start so I set it at 1-1/2 turns out as outline in the manual. Started fine but quit running when throttle lowered to about 1/8 showing. Don't know where to go from here.

You go to a club and get some hands on instruction as John pointed out. The LA series is the easiest of all the glow engines to operate but you still need to be shown how to tune one. The instruction Manuel gets the engine started but like an auto engine back in the days of the carb you still need to fine tune by adjusting the jets. The needle trick John mentioned is to get the low end adjusted for a fair idle. Once someone shows you how to tune these engines it is simple but until then it can be mind boggling.

If you are talking about the main needle valve out just 11/2 turns then you attempting to start way to lean. Open the main needle minimum 3 full turns from closed for your initial starting position. The needle trick I described above is for the mid range intial set up. This is the screw sticking out the right side of the carb toward the front and it chokes off that bleed hole facing straight forward.
