Its illegal for the end user to change TX crystals. If you think the TX needs a new crystal... ship it to JR's service center or to Radio South.

I was advised it might help me if i got some different crystals for different channels since there are more people that run channel 58 at there field.I have seen a tx that had a crystal that you could remove and change to different channels,it was on the front panel, the guy had several different ones and matching ones for the rx,however he didn't have the rx,one more reason i didn't buy it.The crystals he had were a lot bigger than the one i have in my tx.
If i had the money i could buy a programable tx but i don't. [

Just keep this in mind... what ever the legality of the issue is, you have to know what channels you can and can not use in your transmitter.
*72MHz- Low band channels 11 to 35; High band channels 36 to 60.
Receiver crystal channels (11-35 or 36-60) Within Each Band
Can Be Changed, and Do Not Require a retuning of the receiver.
In other words you can not use a channel 30 crystal in your radio if it was tuned for channel 58! Without going into a lesson on RF (Radio Frequency) You can not go too far from the original wave length without sacrificing performance. You can find yourself with a plane out of range and un-controlable.
If you absolutely MUST change the channel in your transmitter, only go up or down 1 or 2 channels.

Is it illegal to change the TX crystal even if your keep the same freq? say Ch. 58 to Ch. 58? I thought it was only illegal to change the crystal to achieve a new freq. Say Ch. 58 to ch 56. I may be wrong but why else would they sell TX crystals to the public.

It IS definitely illegal to change crystals in a transmitter in the US. I know that some people do it for their own convenience, but it ticks me off.
There are pager companies (and others) just champing at the bit to get hold of our frequencies, so why the heck would anyone risk pissing off the FCC and giving them a reason to take our frequencies?
Just say no. [:@]

Why are companies selling these TX crystals to individuals? If TX crystal swaping poses a real threat, it would seem that only certain people would be authorized to buy them like radio south or horizon.

If you have the correct information about the crystals (the oscillating frequency) you can go to any electronics supply store and buy the crystals. They are used in compters and many other things. anyone can buy just about any crystal they want... and no one is going to ask what you plan to do with it.
It is leagal to go out and buy a bow and arrows. You can legally go in your back yard and shoot at tartgets. If you don't have the licence its illegal to take the bow and arrows out and kill a deer.
Yo can go downtown and buy crystal Draino and litium batteries and a bunch of other stuff... that desn't make it legal to cut up the batteries dump all this stuff in a container... let sit for a day and the go sell the crystal meth that you have made.
Just because you have the ability to buy it and know the basics of how to use it does not mean its legal for you to do anything you want with it.

Well I pretty much knew that I couldn't be making crystal meth in my house. I know that it is legal for me to cut wood down on my property and make a bat on my lathe. I know it is illegal to hit someone with my new bat about the head repeatedly until they are dead. It isn't immediately obvious what my intentions are when I cut the tree down. It still isn't obvious what my intentions are when I fashion a bat out of it.
It is however, pretty obvious what my intentions are when I request a 72 mhz TX JR crystal on channel 56 and a JR TX battery. It's going in a TX. I know, maybe the person will take the new crystal to a certified radio repair shop that just happens to be within driving distance which just doesn't make sense. A person would just send the radio in and have it tuned there.

All i wanted to know is about crystals and the possibility of changing them. Here is what i found out,i'm running 58 and possibly wanted to somewhere around 45-46 but it has to be sent in to be retuned for the frequency i will go to HOWEVER,i
was told if i wanted to change to 59 or 60 it would be ok if i did it but anymore jumping it would have to be recalibrated and this came straight from a warrantee station.I asked the guy about the programmable tx's and he told me they have a "module" system but it's not compatable with the quattro tx's,now here is a damm kicker,it's illegal for me to change the crystal but it's ok for all those that have a programmable tx to change to different frequencies ?and your bashing the hell out of me because i asked about just a crystal ?,i say bull pucky and if i had a fickle finger some of ya'll would get it!
As far as pager companys are concerned,if they want it bad enough they will get it anyway and if there is a shop in my area i would take it to them,if not i'll buy me a pager and steal there darn crystall so there.

Ok,this is what i found about changing crystals.
How do I change the frequency on my receiver?
Futaba 72MHz receivers are all center tuned within 1/2 or the other 1/2 of the frequency band. So, if you have a receiver on any channel within 11-35 (72.010 through 72.490), you can purchase a receiver crystal and change it to any other channel within 11-35. If you have a receiver on any channel within 36-60 (72.510 through 72.990), you can change the crystal and use it on any other channel within 38-60. However, ALWAYS perform a full range check prior to utilizing the equipment. If you have any doubts about its performance, it is always best to send it for service and let us match your transmitter (if your Tx has a module, only that needs to be sent) and receiver for maximum performance
Futaba 27MHz, 50MHz, and 75MHz are all center tuned to that particular band. Therefore, any 27MHz receiver on any channel can be changed to any other channel WITHIN THE 27MHz band, and same is true of 50 and 75 MHz bands.

Changing the RX (receiver) crystals... THAT is legal. Change 'em all you want. (legally you can stick the 75 mHz crystals in the 72 mHz RX... but it won't work well.)
Changing the TX crystals requires retuning by a person with the correct testing equipment and training. Its not leagal for the averag "Joe RC'r" to change the TX crystal, even when swapping a new one on the SAME frequency into the TX.
Thats the US law.
