i got the wing in the other room. where did you get the extra weight from? 5lbs for car. + the plane. there will be no plane engine because the front half of the plane is splinters. I have another car that is 4wd, but that engine simply wouldent cut it. so total weight I am looking at about 6lbs. My buddy said that a avastar would handle that. he said it would be patheticly poor floatability. but if he took 6 lbs and put it in a flying avastar that it would lift off.
The pices are coming together quite nicly. lots of missing pices but nothing that cant be patched up with some balsa. Also I am using gorilla glue. it seems a little heavy but other than that should it hold up?

haha, this tread is fun to read but i would bet that even with a car with a wings attached to it, it won't fly, no matter what. I strongly doubt it but add some video!! I am curious to see how that turns out. Good luck!

I have to agree with Matt on this one.
While it won't have a great glide rate, as long as the CG is close (or nose heavy), and launching off a ramp and down a hill, I'm betting that you'll get a pretty decent "flight" out of it.
I too would love to see video.
Good luck, and above all, have FUN!

I like the idea, but I think that ramp is a little harsh. If you hit that thing at 50mph, those Avistar wings will probably fold right down around the car. I would go with a longer ramp that didn't go vertical so quickly. Also, I would mount the wings with either a neutral incidence or even a little down. Meaning that when the car is sitting on the ground, the wings will either be paralell to the ground, or the front of the wing will be a little lower than the rear. This will keep the plane/car on the ground until after you hit the ramp. If it were me though, I would add an airplane engine to the top of the rig. Something in the 40 size that would really pull it along. Then, you could lighten up the car be removing the engine and fuel tank. You could rig up the rudder servo to steer it on the ground and that would eliminate all the heavy stuff on the car. You could probably eliminate one or even two of the wheels to lighten it up even more.... wait a minute, I think I already have one of these
Seriously though, it should work. I wouldn't worry about powering it in the air. If you launch it at 50, you should be able to get a pretty long flight. And, with all the suspension, you don't have to worry about hard landings.

I just got a crazy idea. Why not use a couple of y-harnesses and hook up the ailerons of the wing to the steering channel on your car? Then, hook up the elevator to the throttle channel (more throttle means up elevator, less throttle means down). It would be much of a plane, but you'd have a car that could "jump" a couple of hundred feet with a fairly small ramp. That way, you wouldn't have to try to communicate with a co-pilot. The only problems are
#1: I don't know if it would be considered flying and therefore need to be on a different frequency
#2: If you did hook up the car throttle to elevator, be careful about putting on the brakes - it would stop you REAL quick.

i agree that it could be a glider, too. the canard design is for a glider not for powered flight. i think that dennis hit it on the nose, though... getting the CG right will be the most important thing if you want to have any kind of "flight". otherwise, i know what you guys are talking about. any kind of additional lift would help carry the car further so as long as the lift surfaces are in the right places, any additional wing would help! and since it doesn't have to "float" in for landing (in fact smashing down is what the car is built for) high wing loading isn't detrimental... at worst it's just a ballistic missle with stubby wings! :-)

You guys are really getting into this ... all of you are total nuts screaming for videos!!! Hahahaa ... tell you all what, I took my GWS Formosa (slightly damaged) and I launced her off the 18th floor of my condo ... man it went straight down and did not glide much! I got the CG wrong, should have taken it further back. The plane hit the ground and missed some parked cars, she was only about 7' away from the cars. Imagine a foam plane with 2 broken motors in the nose coming down from the 18th floor!!!
Fore - yeah my wry smile ... hehehe

I like the y harness from the cars servos to the plane. but there are a cupple problems first. I cant fly a plane and my buddy cant drive a car. and lets say i get the center of gravity a little off and i need constant up elivator to keep the nose up. well my car engine would rev it self to its deth with no load on it.
Ya the ramp is a little much. that was actually built with the intent to jump just my car on level ground.
The pices of the avastar are coming to gether. I have from where the wing attaches in the front all the way back done. and when I say done I meen it is a mess of apoxy wood and glue. the thing looks like it was run through a wood chipper then put back together.
just waiting for the apoxy to dry up and it sould be time to mount it.
speeking of mounting it I havent really thot of that. making a rigid mount to the car was my first idea. go off the pins that hold the body on on the car. But then I was thinking when this thing crashes the car is going to shred this plane. so I got thinking if there was some way for in a event of a crash the plane part would have a breaking point or "weak link" where the fusulage will break off from the car and have regualr plane damage with out a 5 pound car smashing it into the ground.
I am not shure of the whole backwards wing set up or what that was called. I really dont know but it seems if the wing is in the center of gravity why shouldent it stay ballenced. for all I know the whole plane part may be hanging way off the back of the car to keep it even.
I like the idea of putting a seprate engine on the top of the plane pushing the craft. but I think it is to early in the project to talk about that. I am leaving for vacation tomarow at noon. so I hope to have a plan of how the plane is going to attach to the car, this way while I am gone my buddy can do all the tedious work of wiring and adjusting the servo linkages and such.
I fully plan to have many vids of its madien crash, oh I meen flight. little off topic but I have NO idea to poast a VIDIEO on the internet. I have windows vid maker. I will look around to see what other people have done.
oh ya what should I call this thing??????? Any one ever seen the movie sonw ball express. well I was thinking of calling it the mighty mongroll after the snowmobile in that movie. hope you guys dont get sick of my long poasts. I will try to log on rcu on the curse ship.

Remove the engine Batteries etc which drive the car...
Add a .46 Glow engine driving a high Torque prop in a pusher configuration and set up the controls as above...
This will give you enough power to drive the car on the ground and air plus eliminate a sxxt load of weight... and lets you control the Car and the Plane on one set of controls...
Yes... this will work...
The Ramp is WAYYYYYY too steep... you would be better to drive the car off a drop...

like my partner in crime, tIANci, would like to see some pre-flight pictures. uhh... not that we don't think there will be post-flight pictures but just that post-flight pictures might be a little different than pre-flight pictures :-)

I don't mean to sound like a smart *****, but from the photos I seen earlier in this post that showed many pieces of busted up avistar, it appears that somebody had trouble flying an Avistar when it was a whole Airplane. Do you really think that the person who created all those little chunks of busted up avistar is up to the challenge of flying the AVICAR?
Anyhow, I applaud your creativity, vision, and wish the AVICAR the best of luck.

the avastar got smashed up from doing aerobatic menuvers with floats attached to it. I think it crashed in the middle of the pond and that was what is left. I think he tried to do a front flip, what ever that is in the plane world.
Jeez I dont know when this thing is going to get off the ground. somthing always comesup on a good day.

and I see the evoluting .40 engine that I have sitting around making its way onto the front of the plane. For a little more of a extended flight.
