offering to get a job or do chores to pay for it is the first thing that comes to mind
Get the background info done.. research the costs, find a club, talk to an instructor (ask your Dad if he can take you to a club)
Get Dad involved, make it a father/son thing

yea thats a very good idea, thats how i got into it, i found out my dad used to make them when he was my age. so when he found out i wanted to give it a go he was very supportive, lend me his tools etc (don't take them without asking
). obviously your dad might not be the same but they often like things like that, the kinda things they did when they were young

Thats the way I got into it when I was 10yrs old. Found a tower mag and thought it would
be neat. Back before internet was around (24 now). Remember him having them but never
saw him fly them. So when I brought it up he jumped right in and bought all of the stuff. We
shared a plane until I got my own for the next x-mas and its all been fun from there. I was
out of it for 9 years and just got back into it so now I have to interest dad to get back into
it too. Its a great father/son hobby!!!

the only thing is my dad will only build them himself he won't touch kits which sometimes annoys me as the model shops in my area don't have very good supply of materials so i have to order from the internet. and sometimes i just wanna get out and fly but nooooo i gotta do the hard stuff first
but its great fun building with my dad it is indeed a great help having someone help ecspecially your dad haha (even if he does annoy you sometime
) so do everything you can to get your dad involved[8D]

Get a couple of catalogs (free) from the internet stores (Tower, Horizon Hobby) and make sure he sees you browsing through them. Leave them open to something you like on the dining room (or other suitable) table for him to find. Enlist your mother's help if you think you can. Remember good grades and not a messy hobby.
It will keep you off the streets and out of trouble (let's hope).
Try to get him involved too, a father /son activity. Safer than a motorcycle too.

Heres how i got him into it.
Well, he new i loved aviation, because i read alot of books, looked for lessons, and finally got to models). On christmas, i told him how much a whole RTF Glow Model set will cost. (Dummy me, i was thinking about the NExtstar). So it went electric. Paid 100$ less, had two flights and it was gone. When i crashed, i was in a worse situation than you. NOthing gets dad madder then seeing his investment go to trash. So then i knew i couldn't get anything. Now came the part that got me really involved on RCU. I started posting thread, replying threads, about 300 posts in total. I was telling stories about my flights on the electric adn what my situation was. Then god blessed me. J3FAN decided to donate his trainer to me. Of course, my parents thought it was a joke and it was a scam. I contacted him, spoke to him, and he decided to send me the trainer, but first, i needed something that took alot of courage, my parents permission. I know my parents would give it to me if they believed in it. So this was the moment of truth. Having the phone in my hand, and J3FAN on the other line, i gave the phone to dad so they could talk things out. Of course i left, but i was still secretly sitting behind the wall listening to the conversation. So it was decided, hell send me a plane. My parents liked the idea and they accepted. But here is the worst part. They thought he was going to send me his used trainer, instead J3FAN decided to buy me a RTF set from tower hobbies, 250$. My mom freaked. Why would someone buy a trainer! I understand sending a used plane, but a NEW one!? SO here came the tough decision. To call J3FAN saying the refuse, or keep going. I got a letter from JSfan the next day to my parents explaining the situation because i knew my parents never believed me. The felt touched and said its ok. Thats how i got it! I got the plane, and as soon as i wrote it, i written a letter, had my parents sign it and send him a big thank-you. From then on, i took my father to the field after i soloed, because until then he just dropped me off and left. So i learned and after a a while. HE wanted to stay because he couldn't believe that the plane is in one piece. IT was a beautiful day and this was the flight that i counted on the most. To show my parents i could fly. I DID IT! I proved them right. My dad loved the hobby from then on. Not love, as in, bought one for himself and me and started building. HE just enjoys going out with me, do a little business over the cell phone a t the field, and watch me. But here is the best part. When i was looking through a magazine, i was reading an article about a kit B-25 Mitchell. HE told me if he and i would want to build one, i was in love with the idea. That was 1/2 a year ago. And yet still, we didnt order a kit, he just keeps coming with mer to the field to watch me. I reminded him a few times, but he just kinda ignores it. And being 16 years old, i know when not to ask parents for something. SO its most of the time like that. But there is some good news. My parents left for the week on a business trip and you know what that means. Lots of cash to feed yourself. Translation: Buy a massive pizza for 12 $ and eat one slice a day along with school food, but i have an account at school which doesn't count. SO if i survive, a might invest in a new kit. What fun would that be. So what i would recommend, is post up the situation your in on the Pay-It-Forward thread and maybe somebody with a trainer might donate you one as one was to me. IF you wait long enough, and if i don't crash, ill donate you mine. RTF. I just got to build my kit, have a few flights with it, and get bored with the trainer, and donate it. Im not going to sell it because thats just horrible. If someone donates you something, you have to give back. Nothing is for free.

Kudos to you Samolot i wish that i was that mature thinking at age 16. I live in a small community of 400 in rural Saskatchewan and the best place to take off is on of the gravel roads just on the edge of town. I moved into town from a farm just recently and every time i fly i get some people that come down and watch. I have even had a couple of kids inquire as to the cost of buying a kit. I have told them that once i get comfortable enough i would help them out using my trainer to see if they are really interested in it. there are 3 of us ( in our 30's) that fly in town and i think that we can grow that to double digits. So yep just pass it on and hapy flyin".

Thats the cool thing about not flying in a club. If you know how to fly, and got a place close to home, you can almost bet that someone will be interested and ask. That maakes you feel pretty cool, i already had that experience. I go to this massive parking lot with my family to ave a nice barabeque. Its in the mountains. IT has a nice hiking.biking trail and its loads of fun. Every time i got there, there are alot of people flying these things. And one winter, i saw a man with a helicopter and i had the chanmce to talk to him, better yet it was my father sho started talking becuase i was too shy (About 12 i think). Anyway, its a cool feeling. BUt still, clubs are fun. If a cop was at that park, then maybe some trouble would happen. So back to cheesmaster. IF your in a sticky qituation about getting it, i forget to answer your question in detail.
1) Dont listen to that, do more chores, get better grades poop. I got good grades, i help aorund the house, but the problem is, i was always like that, so nothing special. (Not trying to show off).
2) COURAGE. If you talk to your dad and tell him the opportunities with the hobby, and get to have that manly discussion, he'll know what you want. And if a special occasion comes along, or if hes in a good mood, you just might get it.
3) IF everything fails, SAVE MONEY. Thats how i get my hobby supplies. If you kive in a small town, sell some stuff. EBAY is great.
4) Patience. I could sit for months on my butt staring at the screen and think about what planes i want (like i am now), and still not managae to get it because of money. When your young, parents can get stuff for you, but once you get to a certain age, you gotta spend some of your own cash. So as long as my money is low, nothing for me.
5) Oh yeah, by the way. Once your in the hobby, talk to your dad about how much fun this is giving you. Hell participate in the club, meaning rooting for you. And the best thing is, when he talks to poeple his age in the hobby. THen hell know, this isnt a toy, but a real hobby. Thats what my parents thought at first. So once your dad ses waht goes on, hell support the hobby, meaning buy extra props, meaning the little things that count in the hobby. I had my adad ring out a hundred bucks on glues and props. And some spare parts for my electric crap. Still trying to get it in the air, but no luck. My latest project will be removing the dihedral from the wing, and converting it into a taildragger. IF you have any suggestions, go to my thread. Its the one titled taildragger, Dihedral, etc.
Chess, its gonna work out, time goes by fast, as soon as you know it, voula Xmas. You cant go wrong there. Plus, the saving you can get at the Tower (towerhobbies.com) during the season are incredible.

So Michal, good going on promising to donate the plane, please keep us all informed in the PIF thread if that is what you decide to do and some really great advice to chessmasterx to boot

Have you heard from J3FAN since his wife passed on. The last I heard was he was giving up on the hobby and I have not heard/seen him since???

Bubba I agree. It sure would make for a good story to see this trainer passed on to another person seeking to enter the hobby. I hear tower trainers are very good for beginners

He gifted me with a towertrainer, and its perfect. I could think of a million uses for that plane, such as the engine, radio etc, but i plan to donate it to someone else. Even if i crash and break something, ill fix it. But im not going to let go of the plane that easily. Until i get my second one, keep it. Hopefully by christmas. The problem is, im planning to remove the dihedral from it and make it a tail dragger so i can learn even better to fly RC planes. Good idea or bad idea bubba?

Michal,
Calling him is up to you, but honestly I would love to hear from him himself. On another thought, maybe him finding out that his extreme generosity has really done it's job and maybe, just maybe he'll reconsider getting back into flying. He is missed around here. I know of at least 5 members that have asked about his whereabouts recently.
Now as I mentioned what you do with the plane is completely up to you. It would not hurt a beginner and I can think of one plane right now that is a trainer that has no dehidral (the World Models SkyRadier has none or very very little), plus reconverting it back to a trike is not hard at all
. The Skyraider flies very well for the high wing trainer and is quite aerobatic to boot
Again, I'm not trying to tell you what you should or should not do, that is totally up to you and I personally would never try to tell anyone what they should do, it's not my nature, but I will make suggestions if asked and always mention my wishes.
Of course I just would love to see it get back to someone in need and I talked to you enough privately that I have no doubt that is going to happen. I am glad you are enjoying it and my guess is if you do call J3FAN, he may even enjoy hearing about what you are doing.

Thanks for the help guys/girls I'm trying to talk my dad in to getting me a p-51 b/c the guy that is teaching me says that i don't need a trainer or an advanced trainer but I'm still kind of wondering if i still should get a advanced trainer (you know just for a little practice) but i don't think it would hurt if i got both but i don't know i know it would only hurt the wallet we might get hit with the Hurricane Rita in a couple of days....so we will see what happens.....
Thanks For the Help Again!![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=biggrin.gif][sm=cool.gif]

You know what, if your with an instructor, its a perfectly logical situation. It will take much more long time to learn, but wants you solo, your there. Now, these planes are fast. Take it from me becuase i have flown both a trainer and my instrucotrs P-51 (he threw me the controls once he got it in the air). The P-51 doesnt get puched around by the wind, its a powerful plane. I think you can handle it as i did. I brought it back to the ground. I jsut want to let you know that i got my trainer, and i still ahve it after 3/4 year and as you can see, im not broed with it, im not fast to give it up.

check the forsale forums here. they are usually pretty good if you only buy from members with a good ratings. there are trainers that cost less but you have to look around to find the equipment cheap. and it dont make sence to shop around for a 60 dollar trainer and then spend 100 dollars on a os engine for the danged thing.

If your thinking P51 you could check out the [link=http://www.hangar-9.com/PTS/]Hangar 9 P-51 PTS[/link].
As far as convincing your dad, why not get him to come to the field and take a spin w/ your instructor? Dad's usually like toys as much as their sons!
