I do have senior flyer standing by me while flying, so in case of any nose dive or if plane gets outta control I can hand the transmitter to the senior flyer and get it corrected.

Things like that are a quick way to upset people and turn them off from helping out again. Do them a favor and use the buddy box if you're going to ask for help.

As an instructor who has stood next to students in situations like this I can tell you that there is nothing I hate worse than getting handed the radio of a plane pointed straight down, going 150 mph, and 20 feet from the ground!!!!!

PTS Mustang or Nexstar Select? I've narrowed it down to these two planes for my purchase. I'm new to nitro airplanes and would like some input as to which trainer to go with. I've spoken with several hobby shop owners with varied opinions. Most of them say go with the high-wing trainer. A couple others said learning first on a tail-dragger would be fine as I wouldn't know the difference as I haven't flown either type before. I plan on joining a club and getting the proper training on the plane I purchase. Both planes I am looking at have flight simulator software which I plan on using extensively. I purchased a small 3-channel electric plane to practice with and to get plenty of stick time before flying any gas models, which has been working out well so far (few minor crashes, ground takeoffs).
This subject has probably been beaten to death but I had to ask as spring will be approaching soon.

With the subject of trainers on hand I've flown once in San diego but in Canada it is getting a little snowy[:'(][:@], this is where my question comes in! If I slap on some skiis on my tail dragging trainer, is it still stay a good trainer?
Thanks,
Dave Trimmer.

Yes, trainers make wonderfull ski planes. Make sure that you tether the skiis so that they don't flop around. There will be some minor speed-sensitive trim changes in flight, but nothing to get excited about.

I'd go with the Nexstar. It is more likely to give you quick success & survive the experience. Additionally, the Nexstar is easily modified for follow-on projects -- like floats, & skiis, or a "trainer" hot rod (which can also do floats & skiis). Trainers are not just trainers -- they are "forever" models & if you don't get one now, you will miss a lot of fun & could very well end up buying one later.
Nice as it is, the PTS is a one-song bird. Save it for a nice second plane -- by then it might be available as an ARF version, & you could dress it as you please.

I've got to agree with Britbrat, the Nexstar is a better choice. Unless you need the motor and the radio steer away from the whole RTF combo if you can. I say this because one of the first things that gets thrown out is the AFS system, so why pay for it if you aren't going to use it?? I've taught quite a few students that had the Nexstar and it's a nice flying plane. You'll do fine with it.

Thanks britbrat and RCKen. This advice helps me with my decision making, and I never really thought about the float or ski options, which would work well in Minnesota (Land of 10,000 Lakes). [sm=drowning.gif]

RCKen,
Thanks for the advice, This sunday I did 3 to 4 flights with the senior instructors, did very good, had been little rough in landing with my high wing trainer. While they left, I did 4 to 5 solo flights by myself you can say after my first solo flight, those were very confident solo flights of mine, I had a good control of plane, did improve in landing, even with dead stick, flew in flying circuit wind was much high speed, but I feel myself that now I can fly solo, and people at the field which are seniors did appreciate me for my success, this coming friday which is 24th feb, Im gonna participate in Novice category, I hope I would do good, wish me luck. I hope I deserve that ATTA certificate by RC Universe. if im given that it should be in the name of Mahmood Iqbal Khan "Mody"
Thanks

Congratulations to all of you on your PTS flights.
Sure would like one myself but can't justify paying for motor, radio equipment and even simulator that I already have in abundance.
I hope they come out with an ARF version (or do they already have one I didn't see?)

It's been estimated buying repalcement parts to make an ARF version of the PTS would total about $220.00. I'm tempted to buy the parts (sans trainer gear) so as to have one in reserve, but hope to see an ARF version before long. Maybe combined order/ shipping of the parts would qualify for a reduction in price. I certainly can't complain about quality or defective parts, and can't demand anything be replaced for free. This is a really fun plane!
If anyone hears of the release of an ARF version, lemme know!!

Sounds like we need a report from your wife. She has a big investment there & we'd like to know if she is nervous about how you are handling her money.

Hello everyone,
I actually just flew the Mustang PTS today, with mild winds. I found the plane hard to trim with the flap always in the down position. and the plane kept wanting to clime, although this can be trimmed out to an extinct, it still want to clime due to the flaps. The landing approaches and touch downs are absolutley perfect, all 3 point landings. All in all this is an excellant flyers. I do reccomment puting in the functional flaps as I will have mine in by this weekend. The motor seemed a little week, new motors do, but a little adjustments on the low end was needed. I took the airbrakes off before even flying. This would slow the plane down way too much.

I know what you mean re: trim with the flaps down> I install the servo before the first flight, and noticed that it wanted to climb, worst if you were at WOT. I had to turn them off when up and flying, just trim with the flaps up, and when you need the flaps, to take off or land, you should not have to re trim. I only use the flaps for no wind for take off and land, otherwise there off. too bad the radio does not have a prorportional knob to adjust the flaps, some other TX have them, not this JR model.
Your motor will get better with time and flaps up.

I too flew my mustang today for the first time and I was really impressed in how nice it flew.I removed all the aids , raised the flaps before flight and swapped the prop out for an 11x6.The mustang looks great in flight doesn't it? I installed my functioning flaps this evening and cant wait to use them for landing to help me slow her down a little bit as I still come in a tad fast .

Got my P-51 PTS yesterday. I assembled it in one evening with no problems. The balance is a bit nose heavy.
Does anyone know what the weighted disk is for that sits behind the spinner backplate ? Has anyone removed it and flown the plane?

its to help keep the engine running. It can be removed but you will need to get a normal one to replace it. I removed mine after i got a gallon of fuel run in it.

Thanks RCKen & tfarmer96 for that quick answer re the "flywheel"
I'll leave it in place for the maiden flight this coming weekend. I guess I'll just add ad bit of tail weight to balance it. As you can see from the pic I decided to remove the speed brakes.
My instructor will maiden her.... then I'll buddy box with my instructor.
Can't wait!

good move next you will want a 11X6 2 blade. After i get my build done i am going to try to put retracts in mine. We will see how that goes. It not a bad trainer and it will teach you to land under power.
