Building begins tomorrow. I will be picking up the engine this weekend. Is there a major downside to going with the O.S. .50 SX instead of the .46? Only half ounce difference in weight. Not sure if there is enough clearence for the prop on the larger.

I actually have the ARF version and I put in a 4-stroke OS .70 II Surpass. I was told if you put in a 4-stroke you will be using a longer prop and you will have clearance issues. So I put the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNM65&P=ML]dubro landing gear[/link] on, great gear.

I doubt you will encounter prop issues with the .50. The Irvine .53 is a very popular engine and I'm not aware of needing taller gear with that one. I'm ptretty sure you can use up to a 12" prop without issue. Worst case is to use slightly larger wheels. (Personally, I went with a Saito .72 and the DuBro gear...)

12" prop is OK with stock landing gear. The .50sx will probably fit good.
I run a OS.70fs and 13x6 prop and needed to replace the gear.
I bet the .50sx have great power for this small plane.

The OS .50SX would be an excellent choice. I put a Magnum .52 on mine and it screamed. Unlimited vertical. The stock gear is pretty weak and bends easily. I would definately go with a taller aftermarket gear.

Thanks for all of the responses. I figure larger dispalcement in the same block is the way to go. I subscribe to the theory that bigger is better!!

I had a SSE.......rip.......with a .50 SX. I used a 12X4 prop and that plane would do everything I wanted it to......except fly inverted with me disoriented!!!

If you can afford the YS63 that is your best bet. Otherwise any four stoke with a larger prop (13" )and taller gear is what this plane needs to live up to it's billing. Those that say to fly it on a two stroke with a smaller prop have never tried the set up I suggest otherwise they would agree. I have flown it both ways and there is no comparison.

That is exactley right Jim. This plane was really designed as one of the first on the market that was ment to "hang on the prop". To prop it with a small fast prop and expect to set up the 1" throws recomended in the manual would not be a lot of fun. Some people might take "hang on the prop" to mean torque rolls but I take it to mean flying just above stall speed with ample power to pull out if needed. That way you can crank the throws to the max and move the CG way back and really have the kind of fun that this design was intended for. After all the SE has been around since before "3D" was a common term.

I had the impression back then that it was a fun-fly plane but it's not really. The SSE is a combination of pattern, fun fly, and 3D. It doesn't excell in anything but fun. The plane seems very forgiving in a bad situation where the more Extra types would try to snap. They can take a pretty good crash and still be rebuildable. The plane has a low parts count and is relatively simple to build.
There was a guy at the field with a OS 50 SX on his SSE. He wanted to run a 11-9 prop for some reason. Another guy had a SSE with a 46 FX and a 12 1/4 X 3 3/4 prop. The one with the 46FX would fly faster and hang on the prop mmuch better than the one with the 50 SX because of the difference in the prop.
That flying field has a mess of SSE's Everyone has at least one SEE. There was a guy there yesterday with a 46AX on a beautiful one.
Enjoy,
Jim

I had the 50 SX with the 12.75x3.25 prop on my first SSE and it was a blast. I now have a new SSE kit built with the Tower .75 and I'll be swinging a 14x4W until it's broken in. The taller landing made taxing much nicer, even when I only had the 12.25" prop. The prop will be very close to the ground if you have anything near 12" diameter. I would splurge for the taller landing gear if you can afford it. If you ever crash this plane, you can always put the landing gear on your next SSE, and you will buy another SSE if you crash it. They are great planes.

This puppy will fly with any engine that is attached to its nose. The 4strokers are also good choices. Saito all the way though 56,65,72,80,82,91,100,125 are all good choices.
