Default ARF DeHavilland Beaver

Hello,

i am finishing up some things on a new plane and need to know what you guys do to extend the mixture thumb screw to the outside of the engine cowl. i want to be able to adjust it without having to remove the cowling.
for the fuel, i'm just going to extend the fuel line outside the cowl and then send it back in to go through the firewall. do most of you guys remove the pressure line from the exhaust pipe and then refuel through intake line?

any thoughts would be great...

thanks

G'day Mate,
What motor are you using, have a look at the end of the needle valve, there may be a hole in it, with a grub screw, all you do is loosen the grub screw & insert a suitable length, just long enough to bring it outside the cowl, of music wire with a 90 degree or circlular bend in it, & I like to grind a small flat in the wire for the grub screw to grip onto, lock it down & away you go.
2nd question: the answer is yes fuel in thru the carb line overflow out the exhaust line.

Great... thanks for the beta. I am using the TTPRO .46 and yes it does have a small hole in the end with a set screw. i'll do exactly as you say... that should fix it up perfectly!!

would you suggest running the filter at the point outside the cowl.... that way the fuel line will have a break in it so you can refuel, etc.

thanks again

Run a three line system with a fuel dot. A fuel dot is much more attractive than a loop running outside the cowl.

what type of system is that? how do you know when the tank is full. previously i just disconnect the pressure line and then i'm sure i won't over-fill the tank.

thanks for the tips, much appreciated!!

The third line with a fuel dot allows you a line dedicated to filling and emptying your tank. The line from the tank to the carb never gets disconnected. The overflow still goes to the muffler, and you use that to tell whether the tank is full. I run two clunks to the back of the tank, one for the carb line and one for the fuel dot line. It's a great system.

THanks... i think i'll look into getting one. but how do you know when the tank is full?? i don't want to fill the exhaust or create a lock in the engine. sorry if this is obvious but i'm not really sure how to tell. will it just drain out the exhaust pipe?

Sounds like you bought a Vmar Beaver too!! Bought one myself , had to make several modifications that varied from the plans. It does fly fair and looks good with the floats on it. Don't think I would buy another VMAR plane though! How did yours come out??

i'm not too sure whether it is or not?? have a look at this PDF... it is from VMAR but it isn't what my plane looks like at all. the ailerons are controled by two servos out in the wing ends, etc, etc. i'll grab a few photos tomorrow and post them up for people to see. i kinda think it might be a Euromodels ARF??
so far this plane has come out great but it's taken me a while because i have very limited instructions, etc. so i have to figure things out as i go. i'm almost done though, just fitting the receiver and battery and testing CG, etc. i've put on a bigger tire as our field is pretty rough...doesn't quite look like the real thing, but it's better than the little foamy ones it came with.

Well, i guess i can't upload a PDF... not allowed!

Agree with doubledee! I use a 3 line set up with a fuel dot on all my planes. As he said, they are very attractive, they work great & they only cost a few bucks. A friend of mine uses those 2-way fueler valves that only require a 2 line system. Also an attractive unit when installed, however they seem to be problem prone. Everytime he has an engine run problem we usually find that fueler valve to be the culprit! They also cost 3 times what the fuel dot costs. The fuel dot is the simplest maintenance free, & problem free set up that I have found so I won't use anything else.

Alan has allready squared ya away on how we bring the needle valve up above the cowl for tuning.

This is a link to the easy fueler valve that he allways has problems with. I would stay away from this one. Just my opinion, I'm sure there are guys that love this thing, heck he still uses them.

This a link to the one Tower has that is very similar to the fuel dots I use. For some reason they are more expensive though. I get them for around $4 at my LHS.

Good luck.

That is basicly the same thing as the fuel dots that I use only in black plastic. I think the machined aluminum ones look much better though. I put a small pick-up bottle under the 2 pipes from the pitts muffler coming out of the bottom of the cowl & listen closely. With a hand crank pump I can hear a little gurgle just before it is full. With my electric pump I can hear a difference in the sound of the electric motor just before it is full. As soon as I hear the difference I shut it off & just a few drops runs into the pick-up bottle which I then return to my fuel jug. It seems to work well enough for me. Hope that helps.

No I don't have any Beavers yet. I have an Ultimate that is cowled & a Dragon Lady, a new plane that I haven't finished yet will be cowled & is very similar to a Beaver. It is called a Dragon 40. It looks somewhat like a cross between a Beaver, a Cub, & a Rascal. I'm also picking up an Extra 330 pretty soon. [8D]
