I recently purchased my first (used) gas plane off of Ebay. It is a Hanger 9. I have played with the electric ones and thought it was time to move up. The plane came with a charger which was the wrong one. I have since aquired one. I charged everything up and started the plane yesterday. It seems to run fine. Here is the problem, when I turn the plane on all the servos work back and forth on their own. ( Rudder, aelirons, and throttle all work back and forth) I checked the crystal in the plane and it is a 36 and the radio is a 37. I thought this may be the problem. I took a matched set out of one of my electric planes. It still does the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? Needless to say it can't be flown this way. When I started it I just left the plane turned off and controlled the throttle manually. Also is this a good plane for a beginner to learn with? Thanks for any advice given

Well, the mismatched xtals will certainly keep you from flying the plane. And just grabbing a set from anoght plane won't guarantee any better results. For starters, it is illegal to change the Tx Xtal without having the radio retuned. In fact, most transmitters have an entire swapable module that contains the Xtal to allow the user to change frequencies. What kind of Tx and Rx do you have? If they are from the same manufacturer, the best thing would be to send them off for service and have them both thoroughly checked out. This would alsmost certainly involve the cost of the proper Rx Xtal to match your Tx and retuning everything to insure proper operation. Not to mention being cheap insurance to help preserve your new plane!

There are just too many possible things that could be wrong here to really give you any timely advice...[&o]

You have already made the biggest mistake - buying something of questionable quality, from someone that you do not know, about which you know nothing... not good []

BUT; you had the good sense to try it at home before you went out to go flying.

What you really need to do is find a local club, meet the chief instructor and ask for some help.

If the fellow knows his stuff, he will be able to check out the plane from end to end quickly and send you off with a shopping list as well as a to do list. (repairs and adjustments)

Then he can test fly it for you, trim it up and start teaching you the fundamentals of flying.

First thing. Hanger 9 (also refered to as H9) is a manufacture it like Ford. So this brings us to what plane you have. What condition is it in? If the crystels arnt right then it probably didnt come an rtf. What brand is your remote?

Now im going to go off on a limb and guess you dont have too much e[erience.
I STRONLY suggest you find an instructor. he will be able to tune the motor and will show you want you need to look out for. Dont forget that these glow planes are havier and are a bit faster then can give you chalenges later on

Randy, it is good that you came here for advise. All of the above advise is good, but we really can't tell you if it is a good plane to train on without knowing which H9 model it is. The best advise given so far is to find a club in your area to help you. Most clubs will be more than glad to help and they don't charge you anything for it. If you decide to join the club then you pay annual dues like everyone else.

OK you want answers, I will give you answers/ or at least my best guess.
First off the transmitter and receivers have to be on the same channel, period. That is a fact.
Second switching crystals from your electric may not work and as has been mentioned is even illegal to do in your transmitter.
That said you have one other factor, your electric, I am betting, has a single conversion receiver and your new glow plane probably is dual conversion. Meaning you need a dual conversion crystal.
Bottom line?
Get a channel 37 crystal (probably dual conversion, it will say on your receiver) for your receiver. If your local hobby shop does not carry crystals you can order one from Tower hobbies.

The best answer has been given. Find an experienced local person to help you sort it out.

If you cannot do that, for whatever reason, you'll need to provide more info to get any good answers online.
