Default New Builder Requires assistance.

Hi all!

I'm new to this site, and R/C in general.

Before I start to waffle, I'll get down to the meat of my question.

I am attempting to scratch-build a 3D scale Bachem 'Projekt 20' (known to some as the BA349 Viper, or 'Natter')

I have scale drawings, and a plethora of photos.

What I would like to know is: Has anyone any tips on scratchbuilding? (I/E tooling, materials)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This the cigar you're talking about?

I don't know what your timeframe is or your plans are. However it does look like this rocket might be a little ambitious for a beginner.

I guess there are tons of tips out there on scractchbuilding, it would help if you would ask some more direct questions and give some more information. What materials are you planning to use to build it from?

Buy a SIG LT-40 Kit. Build the kit per the instructions, and you will learn a vast amount about how to build an airplane, how to use the plans. Then use the plane to learn how to fly, since I assume by the statement above you have not flown before. Scale planes are generally not very good to learn on. It would be a horrible waste to see the plane you carefully build turn into a pile of toothpicks. while you're learning to fly the LT-40, you can be building your scratch build.

Also, look at the Scratch Builders Forum for tips, tricks, hints, and ideas.

The task you seek to accomplish is not for a first timer without lots of hands on help.

Good Luck!

I'm not sure he wants to fly airplanes, since what he's planning to build is not an airplane, but a rocket. So he might be better off buying a beginner-rocket-package, if they even exists (they probably do).

Will this be a radio control model? How will it be powered? What materials do you plan to use? Have you ever built a plane/rocket before?

Has anyone any tips on scratchbuilding?
#1 Decide on scale. (i.e. 4" = 1" (1/4), 1/72, etc.)

#2 Decide on powerplant (electric, glow, gas, static display, etc.)

#3 Decide on how accurate you want to try for. (Sport scale, stand-off scale, museum quality, etc.)

#4 Gather as many drawings, images, 3-view plans, etc. as possible. Color samples of any originals. Squadron markings, insignias, personal adornment added through service, etc.

#5 Get a wheelbarrow full of cash

#6 Decide on fuselage construction: molded, carved/shaped, framed and built-up (then carved) framed with stringers, some combination.

#7 Get bogged down in the details and take up golf or fly-fishing.

Hi

Interesting project. I would say you either have to go for a lighweight foamy version or a very large model anything inbeteen is going to have a high wing loading.

Are you planning tio make it rocket powered or ?

Either way it wouldn't be suitable to learn to fly with. But if you do build it i'd be happy to test fly it for you, i'm not far away in Nottingham.

Sorry about the delay. Work Commitments.

I intend the Natter to be a mixed rocket/Glide model.

Time scale, as long as it takes (hopefully four-six months.)

Ambitious? Yes. However, I enjoy a challenge (that's why I have spent the last seven years servicing Harriers for the British Royal Navy)
