Default another good 2nd Plane post.

out of these 2 planes I have would be a good 2nd Plane?

The yellow one is a chipmunk with a webra 2 stroke, the white one with orange wings has a 70 4 stroke.

I would like to go out today and fly one as it is a beautiful day.

Thanks, Dave Trimmer

Edit: sorry about the dates in the pics.

The full-scale Chipmunk is a primary trainer, and most Chipmunk models make a great second plane/first low-wing aerobatic model to fly.

This is not to be confused with the Super Chipmunk, which is a Chipmunk modified for faster aerobatic performance. Chipmunks make good second planes, Super Chipmunks are more for experienced aerobatic pilots.

The tail looks like it has a lot of surface area, but the wing looks longer than what you'd see on a Super Chipmunk. A shorter wing aids in faster roll rates, so they usually "clip" the wing to make the Super Chipmunk.

Your Chipmunk will be fine as a second plane, but you'll want to make sure the throws on the rudder and elevator are setup up VERY GENTLY so you don't overcontrol the airplane. Your other plane has a shorter wing on it and is probably more aerobatic overall, although the tail surfaces look more typical of a sport plane.

The original Chipmunk had rounded tail surfaces, so that's probably a 'Super'. Can be a little tricky, but most I've seen flew well. The orange and white one looks like a Top Flite Contender. A classic Second Plane. I've never flown one, but they've been around forever and are supposed to fly very well. I would go with that one.

Hi there,

Years ago I had my CG Chipmunk as a second plane and it fly's tremendously! Just keep in mind to use the rudder in order to keep it straight on take off. You might want to add some up-elevator when adding throttle on take off. The Chipmunk tends to tip over on its nose when the throttle is applied to quickly. As the take-off speed builds up, gently ease on the elevator as in might take off too early and the tipstall could be inevitable.

As far as flying goes, it is a good and direct 'listener' on commando-inputs so try to fly it with smooth inputs the first few fights. With this you get aquainted to the Chipmunk's flight characteristics and, as you go 'down the road' with this plane, its aerobatic abilities as well!

The Chipmunk is pretty straightforward in landing but keep a little power to prevent a to fast decrease in speed with a probable stall. Keep it straight with the rudder and as you fly about yard above the ground set the throttle on idle and land her gently...

Cheers,

Tjen il-vec
