Welcome Irrcanada, I'm a newbie myself and just have a few flight myself. Just be patient and definately get an instructor. They will give you a lot of pointers on your first flight. Each flight you have with an instructor will give you a wealth of information you never would think of. Each flight I do, Im always learning. Even reading threads from the veterans, they seem to learn something new also. Welcome aboard!!

Justin,

Welcome to the addiction, uh, I mean hobby. You've got a good trainer there.

A couple of suggestions from experience training others on the NextStar and flying my own - get rid of the AFS immediately! Also consider getting rid of the droops and flaps (if installed - they are not visible in the pictures). I do agree it's a big plane - almost as big as the Alpha 60 I just got. You'll enjoy it.

You've made a very good decision in waiting for an instructor to help you learn to fly - your plane should provide a lot of flying time and good experience.

I have disconnected the AFS already, I didn't install the Speed flaps, And as soon as i figure out how to get the droops off i will. Just a little funny thing for you, The box says "Ready 20 mins" HAHA took me over 2 1/2 hrs for me. The Feildbox took me all day! Boy do I have alot to learn..

Justin

PS Yes I have the Sim, Been on it for the last 2 days

The droop tips are held on with double sided tape. Also very important - epoxy the tail assembly on with 30 - 60 minute epoxy. Don't trust the plastic bolts. On the NextStar I have, I had my son work with me on assembly so he'd learn how they go together and I found one of the captive bolts stripped out with no pressure on it at all. I just stripped the covering back for a good wood to wood joint and used 30 minute epoxy. Make sure the horizontal is aligned properly with the wing - if the instructions don't show how to do this, there is plenty of expertise in this forum to help you along.

Welcome to the hobby

I got a smile looking at your pictures. It reminds me of when I got my Avistar, after assembling it, I put it on the table and just admired it - couldn't wait to get to the field.

You'll have a lot of fun with that plane.

I solo'ed with the Nexstar several years ago. I found the AFS to be pretty much useless, but the other aids, the wing-tip spoilers and the flap brakes served a purpose. You may wish to keep them on for a while and get used to flying it with them on. Then once you get more profiecient, remove the wing-tip spoilers first, followed by the brakes. That will require some changes in elevator trim so beware.

Good luck.

You can tell that the baby is new.... The telltale red of flying through swarms of mosquitoes is missing... Along with all the green grass stains on the prop tips... The table that doesn't have a couple of big drops of lube that dripped...

You should have a great time, and be safe!

Looks like a nice setup. As others have suggested, disable the autopilot. It will actually fight you when making a turn. You can leave or remove the "flight aids" like droops and slats. Take it slow, listen to your instructor.

Good luck!

Congrats!

Remember to take some Windex (or other type of cleaner) and some rags or paper towels when you go to fly. I did not realize there would be residue on the plane after the flights and did not bring anything to wipe her down. Luckily my instructor had some.

Another thing to do before flying is to fuel-proof the firewall and the area behind it. I developed a leak and had fuel soak the wood. Luckily I noticed it before it did any damage.

You can search here for fuel proofing and you will find many tips.

Good luck and let us know how your first training session goes.

Welcome , Nice set up.
I did notice in your pic , that your liquor supply a little low. You`ll diffently need that stocked for the after flight jitters. lol

oooh boyy!
now that your club members know you got booze you'll really need to stock up

A tip on that plane. I just soloed a guy on one and its a fine bird. it has one characteristic that I like, it has a tendancy to drop its tail in turns UNLESS you use rudder along with aileron to turn. Some people don't teach rudder use to students but this plane flys WAY better with it. I learned this here: "it drops its tail do to adverse yaw unless around a one to one mix of rudder to aileron is used". well it is not a direct quote but it's essentially the message.
SO what I teach is when you fly you move rudder along with aileron as if the two sticks were linked together. check with your instructor on this and have him try it both ways....have fun[8D]

Good luck with your Nextar.
I had problems with mine .This is what I learned: flying off grass-31/4" wheels, remove ALL slop in main lg.gear. Attitude on ground-slightly nose high. Min.travel on nose gear[otherwise real erratic].Used slight amt. of up elev. on takeoff roll. Flys well once airborn, takeoffs&landings on skis are easy. Should you be flying from paved runway, fewer problems will be experienced.

Well UPDATE!!

I started the engine today, found out one thing, THE MIXTURE is set to wereever the factory is, and i'm at 1600 ft asl, the engine would idel but as i advance the throttle the engine would die, i had to remove the mixture limiter as i need to lean the engine way down. Ran a tank throught the engine going from rich to lean, after the tank was done, My Nexstar was dripping with fuel along the right side..

Some of us keep telling people that the engine is just marginally preset so it will run sort-of. But others insist it's not only tuned but also fully broken in, which it isn't. Out of the bos it has just a couple of minutes of running time on the engine at most. Do a NORMAL break-in on the engine for best results.
Enjoy your plane and happy flying.

Then figure 8's . Im impressed she a good first bird., I thought that I would be overwellming but It was good. I was not scared as I thought. I was quit comfrotable, and never got behind the aircraft. I know its only a first flight but MAN what a thrill!!!!!

Enjoy the Nexstar. I had one myself and think I read somewhere (on this forum) don't wipe down with any amoinia based cleaner. I used windex and the decals peeled off quickly, usually while in flight. If mine was still new, I'd use 409 or simple green. It's just what I read.
