hi i am completely new to the whole rc airplane thing but i really really want to get into it, i keep getting the vision of an airplane flying slowly over the field with me in full control, the problem is i don't know where to start, what to get, so, i've been checking out the hobbico electristar for a very long time and i think that that would be the perfect one for me, its big and slow so i have reaction time to spare, its a trainer, its electric so i don't have to mess with all that other fuel crap. and it just looks like an overall good plane. what do u guys think, what should i get, what do u suggest.

First, welcom to the hobby and to this site. The guys and gals on this site are very helpful. I just learned to fly this year and this site has been very helpful to me. I would suggest you find a local club and talk to their instructors. You will probably need an instructor to help you learn to fly whatever plane you decide on. Tell them what planes you are considering and listed to their advise. There are advantages and disadvantages to both electric and Glow or Nitro trainers. While electric seems cheaper at first, you will need to purchase additional batteries, a good battery charger, and other equipment that can make the price comparable to going glow with all of the needed field accessories. Your instructor can help you make the right choice for you.

Going to speak to those at your local hobby club is an excellent suggestion. They will be more than happy to guide you.
My first plane was an Electristar....in MY opinion. I would advise against it for cost reasons. I could have gotten started with a glow trainer and accessories for half the cost of the Electristar, Batteries and charger.
THe Superstar is a nice plane. Ive seen ti fly with a .40 size engine and its too weak....try a Super Tiger 45. Great performance for the price( I got one AFTER having an overpriced OS and love it.)
Take a look at the Sig Kadet LT-40. Its a great plane and trainer. Its large(visibility up high), very well built(sturdy), great covering job(just looks nice). It flies very stable...and you can really slow this thing down for easy landings.
If you would go either way -glow or electric - I say start with glow. You will be able to begin for less money and see if you truly like the hobby and the challenges that come with it.
Best of Luck....and most importantly....dont rush anything...take your time and have patience.

Hi and welcome.
I just soloed on July 4th with the LT 40 with the Super Tiger .45 and it is awsome,
Handles well with plenty of power, and, slows way down on landing.
it's big enough to see ( 70" wing span ) and flys great !!!!!!!!!!

I have to go with ro347 I am one of are clubs instructors and we try to get new pilots to go with glow mainly for the cost. The LT-40 is a very good trainer and so is the Alph 60.

Hanger 9 solo-sport with an O.S. 46. The best handling trainer and priced right. Last time I looked at their site it was $80.00. The one thing you don't want to cheap out on is your radio. Futaba, JR, Hitec think about the spread spectrum technology 2.4 GHz 6 channels This gives a radio that will grow with you, instead of you out growing it. Good Luck and welcome to the insanity that is our sport.

gully,
I would select a Sig Kadet Senior or Seniorita, They will go backwards in the sky if the wind is over 5 mph. They are great trainers and fly so slow it is almost like taking an elevator ride down when you land in a slight breeze. Maybe 5 foot rollout. The Club idea is a must and you must get and listen to a Club Instructor. First I suggest you get a copy of Fly RC and get the AMA membership application form out and send it in. You will need to be a member to join most Clubs.
Welcome to the Hobby/addiction,

Only thing missing is joining a local club and get set up with an instructor.

How far are you from Stacy Mn.? Come by our field and I`ll take you up on the buddybox with my LT-40 . Give you an idea of what your getting into.
Electric is not my passion , so I can not help you there , but Nitro ? I wear that for aftershave, a little castor blend of course.
If your close to the [link]http://www.spmrc.com/[/link] let me know and we`ll get you some air time. If your under age , be sure to bring Ma or Pa , they`ll enjoy it too.
If your not close to my club, try to hook up with an club close to you and get some air time. If not , electric might be the way to go.

You can pm me here or the contact page on my website. The feild is located about 20 mile north of the Twin cities not to far off 35.
Let me know when coming down.
If your kind of isolated, as happens in rual Mn. Get a Sim. It will help you a bunch.

The Avistar is a great trainer, and capable of keeping you occupied far past the basic training stages. The .40LA that comes with it will do the job of training, but, put a stong .45-.46 in it and she will turn into a whole different bird. I received the Avistar RTF as a gift and it was basically my second plane. I liked it with the .40LA to get used to its charictoristics, but I put a .46AX up front and LOVED IT! Unfortunately, due to my own doing, she is no longer with us. But I plan on getting a new Avistar ARF, do some mods, and resume terrorizing the skies with it.

so the only question is, should i get the electristar (electric trainer) or the avistar (a gas trainer) what should i get, i don't know alot about gas motors and stuff, i'm only 14, motors motors and fuel lines and stuff are Greek to me, does that effect anything if i was to get a gas powered, does it require engine knowledge???????????????????????????/
