Hi folks, I'm a noob here so any help is appreciated!
I'm looking for my 3rd plane. 1st plane is a Nextstar that I have a 2.4GHz radio in with maxxed throws and expo. I can fly it pretty much anyway but under water. 2nd plane is a Super Zoom that I have familiarized myself with triple rates, expo, mixing, some 3D, etc. I would like the next plane to be 3D, ARF, 4 stroke if possible (so i can learn), something that will fly at 8600 feet elevation, and land on rough terrain (high planes tundra / Elk migration area). Something not too expensive so when it hits terra firma my wallet can recover.
I have been reading this forum for a month and have been all over the map as you can imagine! I'm thinking of an OMP Fusion profile but they seem to prefer 2 stroke (If thats the plane, I'll go with the 2 stroke).
What do you think of the Fusion for my aplication or others???
Thanks
Gator

If you want an inexpensive combo, you could pair the Hangar 9 Tribute 36 with a Magnum XL .52 RFS four-stroke engine. You could buy the pair for about $210 and the Magnum would have no trouble pulling the Tribute 36 out of a hover.
I'm no 3D pilot, however, and I'm sure there are better flying airframes out there. If you want inexpensive and a four-stroke engine, however, you should give this pair a try.

We have a guy at our field who has his configured as bigedmustafa says.
It's interesting to see him hover this plane as if it were second nature to him.
Very nice flyer, looks like a lot of fun.

If your going to really 3d get the best airframe possible. Considering your insane altitude you need a much higher power to weight ratio than most need at sea level. But to 3d well you also need a light wing loading. Generally those don't go together so you need to start with a nice light airframe. A profile will fit the bill. I suggest a swany(swanyshouse.com) mojo or omp plane. A saito 82 may be acceptable for 3d without sacrifice weight or power. Defiantly get a second opinion though. Welcome to 3d.

You could also consider the Lanier Radical 330 ARF:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXSVE2&P=0
Tower has the ARF for $69.99 and the Magnum XL .52 RFS 4-stroke for $129.99. If you use order code 011DY, you can save $25 off an order of $199 or more. Since the pair is is $199.98 for both, your cost would drop to $174.98 plus $8.99 for shipping.
If you know anybody who is a Super Saver club member at Tower, you could buy both for $169.98 after discount and get free shipping as well.

Gator,
I've spent many years flying at altitude in Colorado, be prepared for a different enviroment totally. Expect to lose 20-30% power from your engine, and you must also land about 20% faster than you would at sea level. Most of my experience has been at about 6,000'. If were talking about speed, your plane will fly much faster also.
Now if your a golfer it gets really fun, ball flies 30% farther, totally screws up your game.
As for the plane, a U-Can-Do would be a good choice, a 46 size version with a 91 4 stroke.

bigedmustafa,
Interesting option.
Few questions:
I don't see that plane in the Tower catalog, how did you find it?
Where did you find the discount code, I'm a new Tower saver member but still trying to figure it out.
Looks like the Radical 330 ARF will wing load around 12 oz/ft2, any idea how it will deadstick?
thanks

Danny31292, overbored77,
The mojo looks nice and gets lots of recommendations but......very expensive and out of stock on ARF. Maybe that one will be later on...
thanks

The Radical 330 ARF is miscatagorized as a .51+ - size sport aircraft, for some unknown reason. I don't think Tower had been stocking it until the recent buyout of Lanier by Great Planes, so it was added to the website hastily, would be my guess.
As for the Radical 330's wing loading and how it will deadstick, I've mentioned before that I'm no 3D pilot. I haven't flown the Tribute 36 or Radical 330 ARFs, but I'd expect either to dead stick land quite gently by simply keeping the nose down until a few feet from the ground and then feeding in up elevator to flare the plane right before touchdown.
I do own the Magnum XL .52 RFS engine that I've recommended, and I think it's amazing bargain considering it costs little more than many .46 ball bearing 2-strokes.

If he's currently a super saver member and he enters that code in the code box it should apply for him.

If he gives Tower Hobbies his credit card number, they will most likely send him what he ordered, too.

Hey guys....been a while
I decided to go with a Radical 330 since it was cheap. I plan on going to mojo eventually, waiting for arf but may just build it cause of non availability.
anyway, put a ys-63 I had on the rad 330, after tuning and proping I can bearly hold hover here at 8000'.
Guys at the field said you loose approx 3% of power for every 1000' so I'm -24%
So now I'm thinking of hanging a bigger engine on the rad 330
any suggestions? Is it worth the effort?
Was looking at a Saito 115
Will I just be chasing my tail by adding weight and thrust at the same time?
btw, it's a blast to fly and well worth the $70!

I know, everyone will say mojo, mojo, mojo..........I'm just not there yet

What part of the country are you flying at?
Your profile says you are from FL but I know you're not flying in this area, the biggest hill around here is a speed bump

Still looking at a saito 115
can find very little in the forums on this one....realy wierd!
Looks to be only 5-6 oz heavier than the ys-63 or saito 72 (both which I have)
goobs more horspower, only slightly wider.....
I want to get this rad 330 cranking till I rip the wings off, then move on...
I'm tempted!
