Ascent Glider Overkill / Thoughts?
#1
>> For anyone who is into electrics and/or electric gliders <<
I recently "Pimped My Glide" because I was not too impressed with the stock engine power of the E-flight Ascent park flier (love the plane, however). I had tried to fly it in 10-12MPH winds and the thing just got tossed around like a rag doll. SO, I installed a Six-Series Brushless 2700 kV Motor (28mm) by E-flite and am now using 2-cell LiPo 2070 mAh to power it up. I'm using a 25 Amp Pro ESC (E-Flight) which I think has the potential to burn out and installed a Graupner CAM 6x3 folding prop and this is what I can say:
1. Winds aren't an issue at all anymore
2. Super fast
3. Vertical climbs (no kidding) to 1500 ft. in 30 seconds or less
Here's my question: Overkill? What ESC would work best for that engine? And what other electrics can i plop the Six-Series into?

Motor
–noun
1. a comparatively small and powerful engine, esp. an internal-combustion engine in an automobile, motorboat, or the like.
Engine
–noun
1. a machine for converting thermal energy into mechanical energy or power to produce force and motion.
But I'm not getting picky either.....LOL

What were you powering your ascent with before Pimping it?
I was considering the Plug&Play version, but if that is what you had I may reconsider.
specifically being unspecific in the Engine/Motor debate
Thanks

I have that exact motor 2700kv 6 series eflite with a 45 amp esc (overkill I know) and I usually use a 3 cell 11.1 volt battery pack of varying Mah. That motor will slip right into a Stryker C motor mount and a Multiplex Funjet without any modifications. Those I know of for sure. It pushes the Stryker about 85mph straight and level with a 6x4 prop and it can push the funjet about 100mph. The stryker will wing tip flutter in a dive unless you reinforce the fuse.
I'm currently working on a custom motor mount to put it on a Richmodels Ling Cat.

Agreed Capt. Yassarian...the 2700kv will do nicely in most all brushed/brushless replacement jobs. The motor size is almost perfect for any plane.
WolverineRC: Redarding the Plug 'n Play Ascent, I just bought the kit but yet have to fly it. As far as the quality of the kit - they did a really nice job this time around! The new 450BL kit is far superior to the the original kit (see my little review [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_guide/kitratings.cfm?kit_id=2294]here[/link]), and with the upgraded prop/spinner and the 450 brushless that they now include, it will perform very very nicely. If you want to save some $$ go with the new 450BL kit 'as is'. But if you want crazy vertical climb (which I'm not sure why you'd need that), from my first hand experience the 2700kv will complete that request and then some.
In Sum: Get the Plug 'n Play version, you won't be let down. Then if you feel the need for speed - cram in the 2700kv and watch it go! NOTE: You're not going to get insane straight line speeds with the 2700kv. The body/wing won't handle it.... After all, it is supposed to be a park glider.

OOPS! WolverineRC - forgot to answer your initial question. [:@]
The original power plant that came with the Ascent kit (v1.0) was a brushed 400. Really poor performance. You needed zero wind to even get decent climbs. That's when I replaced it with the 2700kv Eflight Six Series. Being new 2 the electric realm, I didn't realize how much of a power house I was placing in it. I needed to replace the prop and spinner with a Graupner because I started to warp the blades on the kit!! They couldn't handle the new engine. [X(]
