Default Which fuel should I get?

I am going to get byrons fuel and I can get any kind I want. But Im not sure what I want.
I will need this for the typical trainer plane. .46 or so.

I wasnt sure what percentage nitro and what percentage oil I should use. A good refrence site would help me alot. Thanks all.

I like 10% or 15% nitro and all synthetic oil. For your 46 two stroke 10% nitro is plenty.
Most of the manufacturer's standard oil content is usually 18%, just stick with the mainstream fuel and it will be fine. There is no need to get too wrapped around the axle when picking out fuel. I like the all synthetic oil because is easier for me to clean off the plane than the castor oil is. I think the modern synthetics are just fine for most normal flying conditions. If you are afraid of not having any castor oil get the synthetic / castor blend, the castor is usually 5% of the total oil content. If less than 5% castor is offered I would get the lowest ratio available simply because the less castor in the fuel the easier it is to clean off the plane.
Once again don't drive yourself nuts agonizing over it, all of the Byron fuel is good stuff.
Actually when I buy fuel price plays a very big role in what I pick out and I don't spend extra for bragging rights when it comes to the fuel.

I prefer caster blend myself. 10% nitro is fine and Byrons is good fuel. Omega is fine also.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I actually am going to be selling fuel in my store. (My family has a convient store, recently added hobbies to our shelves)
I just have no experience with planes and wonderd what I should start stocking on the shelf.

I normally like the orange kind! 15% nitro content, 18% oil content with an 80% synthetic/20% castor lubrication blend is an almost universal blend of glow fuel that will work well with virtually all major brands except YS engines.

My YS is the only engine I'm picky about when it comes to fuel. The restOS, Irvine, TT, Magnumthey'll drink most anything. 10% or 15%, depending on what is handy and the prices. The helicopter gets synthetic, but the rest often gets a mix of castor/synthetic.

My advice is to try different brands and blends. Some people feel they get better performance with one than another. It won't hurt an OS to try different things.

That is very different than what you first posted.
These two clubs are less than 17 miles away from you with a grand total of 32 members combined.
It does not appear that selling fuel could be profitable, with this customer base unless there is a much larger group of fliers not associated with the AMA. Contact the clubs listed below and see if they are interested in doing any business with you before you go off and buy a bunch of stuff that will just sit on the shelf.

Seeing that you want to sell the fuel from your store and want to stay with Byron then I'd suggest getting their [link=http://www.byronfuels.com/pages/products.html#chart_anchor]Premium Sport "Traditional"[/link] blend which has 20% oil as an 80/20 synthetic/castor mix. Byron mixes fuel by weight so their "20%" oil is the equivalent of 16% mixed by volume which is just barely into an acceptable safe range.

Your best bet is to hit the engine mfg site and find a manual. Most trainers I've seen run on 5-15% nitro with an "up in %nitro=down in %methanol; oil ratio stays the same" rule. I know that engines line my Webra can actually run on "straight" fuel, but it can tolerate 5-15% nitro depending on idle characteristics. If you run more than 15%, you have to shim the engine to expand the cylinder. (at least according to my manual....)

like I said, look up the manual and see what it has to say; you could always test a few different blends and do the "pinch test" to see what happens, but if the manual will give you a starting point, go with it...

10% gives cooler running temps and better fuel mileage, and is less expensive. There is nominal power loss.

Most engines seem to require 18% oil, the type is totally up to you to choose. I like a castor/synthetic blend to break in an engine, and maybe switch to fully synthetic after a few tanks/gallon.

I tried the byron 15nitro 20 castor/syn blend in the OS 46 fxi and in the 91 surpass and they both ran really good on it. I looked for more but the LHS isnt carrying that blend now.

I actually have been selling hobbies in our store for a few months. I did contact one club that is not listed above and just one pilot alone wanted 6-10 cases of fuel so It will not be a problem. I am also getting car fuel too but I know a little more about those than I do planes.

Thanks for the club names as well. I will contact them to try working some arrangments out. The reason there are few members is because we are in the country up here and Most have thier own fields to fly in. I have 40 acres behind my house to fly my helicopter so I had never joined a club. But recently I did join as to help the club and also am going to give great prices on fuel to keep these guys burning it.

Plus I sold a airplane RTF and didnt have the fuel for him

When my advanced instructor had his hobby shops he kept his fuel down in price so he was only making A buck A gallon, when on sale he made nothing at all. For him glow fuel was the COME ON and COME IN item. Everyone needed fuel and his prices were the best in town.
Think about it, how many times have you gone into A shop for fuel and only walked out with fuel??[8D]
Seems today shop owners have forgotten these little tricks. []

I completely agree. I will sell fuel cheap as I can because I love the hobby. We have a full convients store/ gas station/ take out food anyways. I dont have to make a living off the hobbies. I am doing it because there is nothing around here and I hope it gives kids an activity that is more productive than drugs or crime. If you guys are ever in NY...stop by

My LHS is trying to pay his rent off selling fuel to us airplane guys; it's really frustrating. He owns a place with in indoor carpet car track, has a few parts, and pretty much stocks only fuel for airplanes, with a few other random parts (he can order GPM products). Anyway he's selling fuel at $35/gallon, 15%. I asked about getting a case of 10% and the price was $140!!!

I am not a vendor and I can get cases online for $20/gal, and I heard he gets them for $15 or something. That's over 100% mark-up. I think I'm done buying anything from him - I was ordering my planes and some accessories from him, and all he does is complain that he's not making any money, then rips us off for fuel.

If you hook people up with a good deal on fuel, they will support your store any way they can. It's a general store? People will start buying milk from you because you hook them up with a good deal on something else.

$35/gallon? That's nuts. I wouldn't play ball. It would be cheaper to just buy slightly larger gasoline models. With how the prices have come down the last few years that's a very attractive option if a person has the space.

yeah, it is nuts. I won't buy it from him anymore. It's just Wildcat Extra 15% Nitro.

There are some good fun flys coming up I think, I'll have to look into it. Check out either King's Point or Crown Point NY, really nice field (big enough for jets) and they are having one in a few weeks with pylon and other competitions.

Really, That is a great price. There is no way I could match that price. I wonder where they get it from.

For almost all flying you won't see any real benefit from more than 10% nitro.
Almost all general purpose fuel has close to 20% oil. It's worthwhile to have some castor in it. Synthetic does excellent stuff, but having some castor is a really good idea.

Try a gallon of 5% and the Omega has both oils in it's mix.

There aren't any magic fuels. And no magic amounts for nitro or oil. So almost any Byron's you get is going to work well. But don't waste money on specialty blends, like for heli's. And don't worry about getting more than say 10% nitro. 5-10% will run excellently well. But do look for a blend of oil. Castor isn't magic, but it is good to have in the mix, for a beginner.

That is cool, since you have been doing the hobby stock for a while you have a pretty good idea if it is worth it or not.
As long as you can move the stock and make a little money then having a "hobby shop" in the area will be appreciated by the car ans airplane people.
Good luck with it.

I really appreciate it. I found that is was hard for me to do anything without buying online around me. So I thought....what the hell, I will see if I can help those that are in the same boat as me. I price the same as a huge online store T_w_r H_bb__s. (would you like to buy a vowel?)

But It is a huge learning experience for me. And luckly I have you guys to thank for the little knowledge that I have. RCU has been a great place for me since i joined.

I'm just curious regarding the prices I see here on the fuel. Especially you as a hobby shop saying you couldn't get it for $15./gal? We pay from $13. to $15.for 10% here from local shops. I know if I had to pay more I would go totally electric. Am now about 50 % electric also with 2 on gas. Definitly considering eventually going all electric but not just due to fuel price. That guy charging $35 gal should be horse whipped.

you said you wanted a good reference site? go to RCKen's and Minnflyer's new site. they actually recommend don't go over 10% nitro for your standard trainer sized engine, just make sure it's 18% oil they said.
