Default Engine Tuning

After a few years of being out of flying, I am replacing and charging my batteries and getting ready to go again. I am having trouble remembering the specifics on tuning my engine. Can someone give a rundown on the SOP of engine tuning?

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Here is where I learned. http://www.gettingairborne.com/engines.html

Where are you flying? I live in south OKC, and fly at Baxter Air Field.

OK GUYS, I screwed up this time!!! I went out yesterday to fly and had a great morning got off the ground fine and made my first perfect landing, and as I have said earlier I feel the plane is under powered. I made some adjustments and then i moved a screw I should not have moved and had no power at all. I loosened the screw that holds the throttle rotation device in place. From reading I guess as long as I have a 1mm opening at the low end and wide open at the top end I am ok is this right? Once again any advice would be nice. I do appreciate it Mike.[&o]

Sounds about right, but I would need to actually look at to know. You want the carb completely open at full throttle (obviously) and you want the carb to close off with your throttle cut button, or full down trim on the throttle. Full down trim is used as a throttle cut on standard transmitters.

Thanks Brett I ran out of time last night to check it out. I am off tomorrow so I will try and get it set in the am. I bought a os.46ax online to put in it I am just not happy with the performance getting it off the ground and I can always switch it to my next plane. It may be because I am use to heli's and I expect it to have enough power to pull it off the ground I made 4 trips down the runway into a very light wind and it would not pull up. It usually will take off but it takes a good bit of runway to do it. The MKII is a big plane for a 40 size and I think they just underpowered it. LOL Anyway no doubt the 46AX will get the job done. I wont be running much throttle once it is up but that is ok I guess. If not I will put the 46 up and get a new 40 other than the OS 40LA There is .65 HP difference in the 2 engines. Thanks once again for the help, It was sweet making a perfect landing yesterday for the first time LOL I made a couple of landings but they sure went perfect LOL but yesterday it was smack down perfect. Cool as could be. later and thanks again!!!

Brett, well I guess I will be buying anew motor I think I shot this one I reset it like it said and it just will not pull the plane off the ground now. I was running cool power fuel which is synthetic oil and I guess it messed up the bearings becase the engine was hot today when I went out to run it. I am trying to decide between 3 engines. The ones I am considering are the OS/46AX, evolution .46nx, and the thunder tiger .46 BB all of these are ball bearing engines and theywill allow me to run the cool power fuel. It would not be a big deal but I have a case of the stuff LOL I talked to horizon and they said as long as it was 10% or higher oil the synthetic would be fine in a bb engine for break in. I do have about a half a gallon of the omega fuel which is made by the same company but has castor oil of 18% content in it. Would you run the 10% nitro or 15 in any of these engines and do you have a preference of the 3. I know the OS is the cadillac of engines but talking to my lhs the say it is not worth the 40 extra bucks and they recomend the thunder tiger over the evo/ thanks Mike
I am flying in KC at Longview lake's field called stam field. If I make it back to OKC maybe we can hook up and fly. I still have family in the Moore area and friends in Norman as well. Ltr

I live in south OKC near Moore. You're more than welcome to come to the field at Draper Lake, just bring your AMA card. As for the engine selection, the guys at my field are amazed at the power I get out of my Thunder Tiger Pro 46. It is supposed to be based on the last model OS before they went to the AX. For my Skyraider trainer it pulls it really well. Speed with an 11x6 prop and lots of torquey vertical pull with 12.25x3.75 APC prop.

I have been to draper lake many times. I certainly woul not go anywhere with out my ama card LOL. I'm sure there are plenty of peps that do but not me. What fuel do you run? I am wanting to run the cool power fuel in the new engine My understanding is as long as it is a BB engine than I can do that. I took the other motor in to have it checked the compression is fine and the guy says it runs ok but it will not pull the plane unless there is agood head wind. Seems funny to me but I am going today and grab and engine just not sure which one. Does the TT have a rear adjustment knob or front mounted? That is my concern I have gotten used to the rear adjustment screw and the front one kinda spooks me. I lived in Moore for about 12 years or so. Well going out shortly to pick up a motor I missed one on ebay brand new in a box for 45 bucks with shipping kicking myself now for not buying it. I would love to have the OS46AX but dont want to drop the extra $40 for it. I have to be carefull with the prop selection ran a 11X4 which is what the my LHS guy said would give me more torque and there was not much clearance between it and the ground. Anyway thanks again for the help! Mike

The TT pro has an angled adjustment needle. My old OS 25 has a straight needle adjustment up front, and it is a little scary. The TT pro is easy to get to without worrying about the prop meeting your skin[:@].

Don't get rid of that motor yet, If you are mechanical inclined; you should tear down that motor and rebuild it. Take it apart and soak it in denatured alchohol. If it has bearings soak those in WD-40 or similar, once you start rebuilding the engine you can use either a few quick shots of WD-40 or a few drops of motor oil to lube the sleeve and piston and crankshaft etc... I have never had to rebuild a airplane engine, but I rebuild my car engines about once a month sometimes twice a month. Also when you rebuid, you can put all the needles back to their rich starting setting and tune from there. You want to tune starting rich and working to lean, once you have the engine at optimum rpm you richin the needle a 1/8 to 1/4.

Well dude I finally made up my mind and bought the Evo .46 Ex today, I thought I had the OS46AX bought and the guy pulled it from the auction. I guess it did not bring enough money for him. Oh well I think I will like this one just fine. I will find out tomorrow evening weather permitting. LOL Thanks again for all of your help. Mike
