buddy box + expo

now I'm confused... I went to my manual to double check and it says that you can transfer any "mixing" to student but I'm not sure if it includes exponential...

It would help to know the transmitter being used.
Four the futaba 6ex 72 mhv version doesn't mix, but my 9C does. I trained with my 9C transmitting and using an old Futaba Conquest 4 chan as the trainer box. Every thing followed the 9C with the exception of the throttle. If the trim was full up on the trainer box, you could get full throttle, but not idle, If it was down, you could get idle, but not full throttle. Set in the center, it cut off both the top and idle.
My son's 6ex though just passed through the "raw stick movmente" per BAX. I went nuts trying to get it to use the expo and endpoints. With that one, you have to feed a programable TX into it.
So, the answer is Yes, No, Sorta, and The best, it depends.

I've used a bunch of different buddy boxes and TX's teaching students.
For the most part the buddy box really needs the same capabilities as the master TX being used to avoid problems.
I normally start each pre-training session making sure that the buddy box EXPO, TRIM, THROWS, SWITCHES, etc. all match the master.
I'll also hold each stick axis partially or fully deflected on both the master and the buddy box, then throw the trainer switch.
Under ideal conditions if you have both boxes with the axis held the same way, when you throw the switch the control surfaces & throttle SHOULD NOT change at all.
Any change points to a mismatch between the two controllers.
And yes the Expo & settings DO NOT "transfer" between the two... only raw stick movements are communicated via the trainer cord.
If you've every used something like PPJOY this becomes obvious.

As has been stated, It varies from one radio to another. The 7C 2.4 has two trainer modes "N" and "F". In the "N" mode everything functions (Mixes, Expo rates, etc.) according to the buddy box. In the "F" mode, the settings of the Transmitter are used. Each channel can be set individually or disabled entirely in the Buddy Box.

Careful making blanket statements, some radios support "dumb" trainer boxes some wont.

rates and expo wont transfer from the master Tx to the buddy box..... you would need to have a computer buddy box transmitter

When I use a buddy-box with my Futaba 9C, the 9C controls all of the expo, dual rates, endpoints, etc. The buddy-box is just a second set of gimbals. As mentioned above, it all depends on the radio. Some radios even have different trainer modes.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a Futaba 6EX 2.4 tx and learned to fly last summer with my Nexstar. Over the winter I have added dual aileron servos and functional flaps, and in the process have increased all my throws so I can begin to learn some simple aerobatics. For my first few flights I will probably have my instructor give me a quick refresher session since I havn't flown since November and only have a few solos under my belt. I figured with some expo, the plane should behave similarly to how it was as I was learning to fly.
Thanks again

Yeah, on the ground I always check out the trims, polarities, endpoints, etc., to make sure the main radio and buddy-box are the same. Then, if there's another experienced pilot at the field with you, take the plane up with him on the buddy-box first to try it out and adjust it, before you hand it to a newbie.
