Check out the posts about S.P.A.D's here.
The first time I heard about these planes I thought everyone was talking about World War One Biplanes...

Check out the two sites mentioned by Draftsman1. When my son accidentially broke off landing gear on one of our SPADs, we just cable tied a hex wrench set on it to get the CG correct and flew it the rest of the day, hand launching and skid landing it. The problem with the landing gear breaking was that I used only two small nylon bolts to hold it on.
Check out the Debonair. it's a great trainer and relatively straight forward to build. You can fine the plans here http://www.spadtothebone.com/freeplans.htm Draftsman1 sells kits, both flat and ARFs, but being across the pond may make that more difficult.

Look on this list: [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4537845/tm.htm]Click me![/link]
However note that the Supercub does not teach you how to fly aileron planes, so you are best off starting off with a "first plane" trainer.

if you go to spadworld.net, there are some spadders on your side of the pond, they could help you with getting the materials. spads can be built in a few days

Ok well for 40 bucks to start, you end up spending more after buying premade gear and extras for a SPAD ARF. These guys do not have much of a site but they will stay in contact with you throughout the process. It is a really cheap alternative ARF.. It is a little easier then a scratch built spad, you won't learn as much about how these things work or are built.
That being said if you are a little hesitant about starting from some sheets of plastic and some sticks, this may be what you are looking for.
Just an idea for you http://www.spadflyer.com/52kit.htm It WILL NOT fly as simply as something with a lot of dihedral like the Debonair but it is still a great flying little spad.
I would suggest contacting these guys through email, they will gladly answer any questions you have before you purchase. [email protected]

My Feedback: (2)
i have the 48" version of ^^^^ plane (www.spadflyer.com)
crashed it hard a while ago, cost about $10 bucks to fix it (broke the fuse)
the thing flies great and is aerobatic for a trainer, not the most stable plane out their, in wind it will "bounce around" (15 mph and above) but nothing thats hard to correct
its a little hard to land, the tail just wont settle down, so landings arnt as "smooth" as other planes (it likes to bounce a lot) but its very durable
(buy some nylon bolts at the same site (when the gear snaps off), if you buy the plane) and can take the rough landings
if you need a cheap trainer that can take abuse ^^^ that is you plane

there are also these, they are pretty hard to destroy unless nose in ground or on purpose crash.
both are easy kits, other then that there are foamies.

Super Cub boi, the deb is a great spad trainer, very easy to build. PM or email me with any build questions. Please go to the spad site and get in touch with the UK spadders there for materials and were to get them. they are not diffucult to build, just a few handtools. knife, drill, propane torch(for flashing) clamps, plyers, screwdriver, a dremel tool is nice to have. 4 m coro and some 2 1/2 PVC downspout. some sheet metal screws, 1/4" dowel, small piece of 3/4" plywood. premade or home made landing gear. thats the bulk of it. once you build one the second one is alot easier.

To make my Debonair even simpler to build, I built the wing straight (no dihedral) and also made it a tail dragger. I've flown the heck out of it.

If you are looking at kits, try a Duraplan - really ugly, but very tough, as well take a look at US Aircore, people love or hate the Aircore planes, not the best flyers, but I have seen a guy nose one in at full throttle and have it back in the air a day later - you can't do that with balsa!

RCKen's list is a good resource.
Also look at something like this:
[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHMY7&P=ML]Click me![/link]
You merely need to add servos and a receiver.
You can also upgrade to standard LiPo packs for better performance. These can be had for as low as $19.00 ea!!!
The above is a great flying plane that lands gently. It will keep your interest for a LONG time.
However: Since you are not familiar with aileron controls, it is imperative that you have an instructor train you with a buddy box.

Here is my deb converted to a taildragger. Flies Great. Bent the gear twice; a little time with a vice and good as new. I have stalled and crashed so many time. The only thing I have done was rebuild the fuse; cause there was so many holes and cracks. The hardest part is to find the downspout
Get an engine with power. This plane is heavy, get something more than a O.S. 46 La. I have the O.S. 46 LA and it flies but it has no power to do simple aerobatics. It will barly loop and roll.[&:]

My taildragging Deb weighs in at 6.5 pounds, but I built it with a nearly flat bottom wing. It loops and rolls great, with a TT GP-42. It also gets airborne quickly. I'm not sure if it's your engine or the wing, but I have no issues with a bushinged 42 on a Deb. It's built to the plans, dihedral included, except for the tail dragging, the flat bottom wing and only one fin/rudder.
My 13 year old son, the better flyer in the family says this Deb is one sweet flying plane.

Hey Super. I sent you an email on the materials. as far as the engine goes. any .46 size will do fine. the Ball bearing type is recomended. mine did fly on a bushing engine but did lack some power. recomended engines OS 46AX or FX, super tigre .45, Thunder Tiger 46 pro, Evolution 46, Magnum 46 XLS. Engines that will work OS 46 LA, Thunder Tiger 42.
Is there a local club? its allways a good idea to find one and talk to the club instructor. If you have any other questions, please email me, thanks Andy

I do love my deb. Mine does get airborne in no time. I'm gonna use it to break in my mag 46 XLS and I might live it on it and put the OS in my stick.
