field box

If its not part of the airplane its luggage.
Field box better be as little as possible, as fewer items as possible to carry to the flight line.
If you get the battery pack that attaches to the starter you don’t need the power panel nor the battery nor the field box….
The electric fuel pumps are pretty much useless better to have a manual crank pump and use a rechargeable glow starter.
Sure I have ton of helpful stuff in my trunk.

I use three boxes
http://www.carlgoldbergproducts.com/...-Mini-Tote.jpg is fairly small and light. It can carry the stuff that is required to fuel and start the plane.
The big heavy box http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Molding-...026&sr=1-8 stays in the truck and has spare parts, hardware, and tools.
The third (similar to http://www.amazon.com/Plano-781-Plas...330&sr=1-2) has spare props, 12 volt battery, and a field charger

I've had a bunch of them and the Byron Pit Pal works best for me. It's molded of somewhat flexable plastic (like army man plastic....) It never rots from fuel spills.

You can buy just the parts so if you change panels or mount a charger and change you mind later it's no big deal. The parts are cheap.

There is plenty of space to mount tool racks and it has pockets that I put stiff foam in and it holds props/tools/starter,etc.

As little as possible, I carry one gallon of fuel, hand pump, glow starter, starter with battery attached, and few hand tools. Doing field repairs should be avoided if possible, your plane should be ready to fly when you get there,

From: No City,
I completely agree with not too big. I used to have a big field box, it's not needed.
You're continually moving the field box to the plane to start the engine, either on a table or on the ground, then moving the field box away - engine dies - move it to the plane, then away, back and forth... I'm exaggerating with the engine dying, but the point is you move a field box around a lot.
The best size IMO is this. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XL417&P=ML They come in different colors, the link is so you can check out the dimensions.
There's not really enough room for a radio, but my old radios got banged around in my big old clunky field box - they got hammered - so now I never put my radio in my field box.
edited to add - no one I know uses the cradles on this field box.

I am like Carrell, I have my flight box which I bring next to the plane, but I also have 2 other boxes that I keep in my airplane trailer. There have been many times, where a friend at the field has needed one of the spare parts that I had. I would rather carry extra stuff with me to the field then go out to the field and have to leave home early.

That me, I bring props CA, tape, double sided tape, rubber bands, screw driver, pliers, hobby knife, fuel tubing. I still find that I'm missing some stuff, like a spare tx because I forgot the other one

Heck, I bring my dremel a lot of times, I am lucky to have a small trailer that I keep most of my plane stuff in, so I just keep some of the extra tools in the trailer. I have a standard flight box, there I have some misc. tools, on that flight box, ther is another box that has my starter, and glow drivers, I also have carry to the pits a small case that has my transmitter, battery charger, tach and battery tester.

Well I have two. one for a quick electric romp and one for a serious day of flying. The tote I got from wal mart for 10 bucks, the tool box from home depot for like 35.

This is what I have. It fits 2 gallons of fuel in the bottom. Starter, props, tools etc in the top. I outgrew the standard ones after about 6 months.

Ijust recently retired my plastic Craftsman tool box Iwas using as a flight box. It held the battery and starters (for helis and planes) in the bottom. It held various hand tools
on the second shelf and the top shelf held screw drivers, allen wrenches, and other various wrenchs.
Ireplaced it with a Plano 7271 fishing tackle box. It has 3 small tray in the front left sidethat holds the screw drivers, wrenches, allen wrenches, and spare accessories. There is a small compartment on the right side that Ihave the starter battery in. Thereare smallpartsbins on the lid that holdglow plugs, 4-way wrenches, radiocrystals, foam tape, velcro strips, exacto blades. Ihave both starters, voltmeter, various typesof pliers, and temp gunin the top tray and a power panel mounted in a seperate box on the right side.
The box is tall enough and heavy enough to place beside a plane against the wing to hold the plane from forward movement while starting. Icaninclude pictures if anyone is interested in how it is set up.

I used a bucket for years and eventually got nicknamed "Bucket Boy". It held all the stuff I needed, but was not very organized. Eventually constructed a Great Planes Master Caddy. But once loaded up will all my "stuff", its a drag carrying any appreciable distance. I had to make a collapsible wagon. Now its not too bad to move around.

Interesting thread,
I too am looking for that "perfect" field box. I currently use a smallish tackle box for my tools, parts and glow driver. I then carry a shoulder bag with my battery, starter, bands, cleaning supplies and fuel pump. Finally, I have to carry the fuel jug separate...
I want to consolidate everything, or as much as possible. However, I live in an upstairs loft style apartment, I climb two flights of stairs to come or go. Whatever I use CANNOT be too heavy, or too cumbersome for this climb. As it is right now, to load the car with my flight line gear and my planes takes 3-4 trips up and down the stairs. Since I live 5 minutes away from the field, (Yes I am spoiled
) I literally spend more time loading that I do getting there!
