You may be looking into the wrong hobby.

The complete airplane packages that are in the $100 range, fall into the toy category.

Do they fly? Yea, however I can make a piece of paper fly also. These planes like the Fire Bird series controls only left and right and power. They are controllable to a point, however if you can manage the first day and not destroy it, you may master it the first day.

Best bet, take you hundred bucks and save it to 200 and look into a glider, like the Esprit.

Save it to 300 and get a Super Star Select.

In radio control, you get what you pay for. The more money you spend the better equipment you will get.

I have seen people spend $500 in $100 airplanes and crash them all and think this hobby sucks. However if they would have spent the $300 for the better airplane, they never would have crashed and would have spent less money.

I agree with what YNOT said. You MIGHT be able to find a decent (used) trainer package on eBay for $250 to $300, which MIGHT include a starter, glow igniter and fuel pump, but it's doubtful.

If you spend $150 to $200 for one of the 3 channel electrics, like the Aerobird, plus extra battery pack, you might be happy enough with it. But it won't be like flying a glow plane.

Kind of like saying a motor scooter is a vehicle like a car is a vehcle.

Just my opinion.

For a hundred bucks. You can get a doe or two! Oh sorry. we guys here in Pennsylvania like hunting. Really. Didly squat! Don't waist your money on a Firebird. They are c__p. Save your money and get a Hobbico Aviastar .40 RTF with gear from your hobby shop for around $350 or so.

If you're patient and diligent in your search for cheap stuff, you might find a servicable radio system for well under $100. you can get a new .42 engine for about $50. If you get into this hobby though, you'll end up $pending and $pending and $pending, so even if you can get away with starting cheap, continuing cheap is next to impossible.

Cheap aeroplanes? You can make really cheap airplanes, some of which fly remarkably well, from Coroplast (corrugated plastic, think election signs/gas station ads) and other materials. For info go to:
SpadToTheBone

Or look at the T52 foamie trainer at:

I agree with 13yearold pilot get the Avistar you can buy it from your local hobby shop or out of tower hobbies for around $280 with a radio and servos, assembles in 20 min and the only things extra that you need to get are your glow starter, and fuel. I would reccomend somebody teaching you how to fly so you don't end up crashing.

Greetz All.
Being the cheap ***** I am, I purchased an Aerobird. It was $150 dollars. I don't know about you, but I live in the real world and money dosen't grow on trees, 2 Kids, Wife, 2 Cars, 1 Home and NO $$$.
Is flying an Aerobird as fun as flying a "real" RC plane as opposed to an electric "toy"? Dunno, I haven't got $500 to blow on an airplane and $75 to join a club and another $75 to join the AMA so you can join the damn club. Then you get to let someone else fly your plane so you don't lose you $500 "investment". No thanks.
I'm teaching myself to fly on an Aerobird. It's lots of fun and if I plant it a few times, well plastic can be glued back together and styrafoam is easy to tape. Don't get me wrong, I'd enjoy flying a gas plane, but the fact of the matter is it's EXPENSIVE.
I'd suggest checking out some of the posts about the Aerobird, there are even some folks who've flown the gas planes who love flying the Aerobird.
I'm not sorry. I love my "toy".

I dunno... I am a pretty cheap sucker too.... but I still think a person can get into the hobby for very little money....you just have to be patient and look in the right places...

Every year my local club holds an auction where we all bring our old stuff (the stuff our wives are forcing us to liberate) and we auction it off! You don't have to be a club member to participate and you can usually walk away with some sweet deals....(much to my wife's dismay ) Last year I picked up a US Aircore trainer, with a Magnum pro .45, and Airtronics Vanguard (4 channel).... all for $115. I sold the plane to a friend, who still flies it, the engine works great and I currently use the radio.

Now, I agree that you don't get deals like that all the time, but with patience and just being in the right spot at the right time you can pick up some sweet deals.... I figure the SPAD route looks nice, and cheap, and durable... so I can fly it, crash it, and fly it again.... If I lose the plane I'm only out 10 or $15.

Once you get going, just take excellent care of your stuff and it'll last you... by the time you are ready for fancier, more expensive birds you'll be so hooked you'll find a way to make it happen...
