Default Engine Hard to Start

Hi,

After my previous tuning problems I think I have managed to get a good setting on the HSN but now I can't seem to start the engine very easily even with a drill starter. I have a XTM 24.7 Nitro Engine and it will not start from cold very easily even with the drill starter. The guy in the model shop said that the engine should start from cold with 2 - 3 bursts of the drill starter and if not theres a tuning issue. The engine will start if it has been warmed with hairdryer, but cut out 10 seconds later. Sometimes the engine will stay running and work for a whole tank but usually it cuts out. It is very unpredictable. Could this be the LSN out of setting?

Thanks!

Try opening the throttle a bit with your radio throttle trim. Then try starting it.

I have just noticed that the glow plug only lights up 3/4 of the way.... Could this be the problem?

if the head is cold you will have trouble... the plug could be a problem also... but try heating the head with hairdryer first and see if it starts...

The engine starts if I keep the trim open a bit more. Should I have to do this though? Is the Idle screw slightly out then? Also I notcie when I put the glow starter onto the glow plug and spin the electric starter to start the engine the throttle servo twitches. I think this may be closing the carb more so their is not enough air getting in. How do I stop the servo twitching when attempting to start the engine... any ideas?

When the weather is cold, I always have to open my throttle trim to get the engine started. As it warms up, you can back off the throttle trim.

Not so much trouble re-starting once the engine is hot, so the hair-drier trick can work.

Is the glitching only when you operate your roto-start? If so, dont' worry about it. Gltiching is sporadic, so the average your carb is open is still where you set it without glitching....er....more or less.

Yes the glitching is only when I operate the roto start. Thanks.

I'm having the same problem now with my sh .18 A few weeks ago when it was pretty cold out I used a hair dryier to warm it up and it was fine. but this past weekend is was around 65 out and I couldnt get the damn thing to stay running to save my life. I opened up the throttle on the TX and that was fine but even after engine temps got around 250 it would cut out. I've since went back to factory settings but haven't had the chance to see if that's going to fit them problem. I really dont think it is because of how it was acting. But I guess we'll see. I too have changed the glow plug and it still does the same thing. Runs for about 30-45 seconds, but once I let off the throttle, it dies. What to do, what to do?

In real cold weather, IE below 70 degrees, Richen up the HSN. Your HNS may be to lean for 65 degrees.

I reset the motor back to factory settings. Both the HSN and LSN. I found that the gap for the carb was a little too closed. So I opened it up a bit. I took it out this morning and she fired right up hahaha But I didn't get a chance to run it around, it started raining. But I'm getting ready to go and try it again and make sure everything is in order. So something to look at is the carb opening. Making sure you have that 1mm gap.

I agree that is what the problem is. I haven't ajusted idle screw yet so I just open the carb via the throttle trim then close it when the engine has started. I was using my car an hour ago and the tire burst because I let it to thin [:@]. Theres another lesson learnt!

It is possible that the low speed needle is in fact out of whack(so to speak). U say its very unpredictable; have u had to "chase" the needle settings all over the place? IF so, as I posted in one of the other threads here; I would check every and all possibilities for air leaks; check the fuel tank and lines for leaks, check the fuel tank cap seal for a possible bad seal; also take some sealer if u have not already done so and seal up the entire engine(backplate, carb with a "sensor-safe" type of sealer) and the "green slime" stuff for the needles(both high and low end needles) good luck with it man!!! just post back if none of this solves the problem)

Default RE: Engine Hard to Start

As I went to start up my engine today I noticed, when the engine was almost starting but not quite, that the engine had smoke coming from it as well as the exaust. I quickly took the car into my work area for investigation. I removed the engine heat cylinder and head button to notice that the heat cylinder screws were slighly loose. I then put the head button and the cylinder back on making sure the the screws were very tight. So after doing this I took my car back outside and it started in one blast from the electric starter. So my starting issues were probably caused by this.
