Curare 60 - Build

Dave,
Fantastic looking plane!
I have been a bit slack with mine but it's fully built and only covering and fitment of electronics and pipe tuning left to do.
The flaps are much simpler on mine because I didn't build in any airbrakes. I last flew a Curare 60 back in the 80s (had an OS61 Gold Head) and still remember what a fantastic lander she was.
Best regards

Hi
Thanx for the complements guys.
Apparently Hanno prettner revised his curare by scrapping the combined flap/spoiler to the separate flap and spoiler design as per the photo of the prettners below.
When I first built it I had the combined flap/spoiler but I trashed the wing in a crash so I built a new wing with the revised design also detailed on the plan (I now had enough channels on my new radio to drive it).
The original combined flap/spoiler worked well but I find the flap alone really does help with a glide on a dead stick without too much slowing down. It also acts as a combined elevator whereas the original couldnt. I believe the original flap/spoiler arrangement was only to counter the pitching up tendancy as the flap deployed. Modern radios can get round this problem by mixing in a bit of down.
Hanno used to deploy the spoiler when the flap reached full extent. Ive found this to be a liability on landing. As soon as the spoiler came up, the model just fell from the sky. I also tried to use them only for vertical downs but couldnt see any difference with or without. I tend to now just use the flaps and ignore the spoilers (the magic only uses flaps and no spoilers!).

Did you finish the curare?

I have the same engine here with a pipe awaiting to go into an Aurora 60 kit I have waiting in a box to be built.
Another classic, Wolfgang Matt this time??

That was a common sight that I recall the reason being spinners of the day (pre Tru-Turn) were very poorly balanced as well as being prone to come apart at the high RPM pattern engines were turning.

If you look photos of all of Hanno Prettner's pattern planes, he did not have a spinner on any of his models.

I wonder why so many of the Curare pictures do not show a spinner the fits the front of the fuselage.

I would be interested to see pictures of your Curare once it's finished. We used to fly a couple circa 1986! Those were the days. Great plane to fly. I might just relive my youth and start building a new one. I will post a picture as soon as I work out why I can't upload pics.

Here are two Curare 60's we used to fly circa 1986. From left to right - Curare60, Arrow40, Curare60 and 2 ships designed by Greg Casson, second from left (South African Champion 1986)

HI Everyone,
Just got my plans from Model Airplane News. Looking forward to the build, it's my next project after my 2m pattern ship.
Any thoughts before I start.... I am thinking about ordering foam wings and stabs from dynamic balsa. As I don't have foam cutting in house yet. Does anyone have any other source for foam wing cores?
the plan do look great and I am looking forward to this project, I think I am going with the robart pneumatic retracts. 2 Ail servos which will simplfy the flaps/dive brakes, and the OS 61/Mac tuned pipe set up. I can't seem to be able to find any rear exhust 61's other than the Jett fire... which I guess is an option but pricey..
any sugguestions or thoughts at this point would be appreciated!
cheers, dean

Eureka has also foam wing+stab for Curare http://www.eurekaaircraft.com/pattern.htm
Pictures below of my Curare I had back in 1978-1981. Rossi 60 FI RC with original Rossi pipe, Carl Goldberg retracts, 7 servos, EK logictrol super pro 7 ch radio. Built from Model Airplane News plan.
About spoiler on Curare:
I used not the spoiler itself (the part that extended upwards behind the "flaps"). I used mine as on control line plane: elevator up and flap down, elevator down and flap up.
In 1977 TOC Hanno Prettner used another type of spoiler on his Curare, see pictures below.
I remember one top flier in my country (Benny Kjellgren) back in 1978 had a short build article about his Curare (built from Model Airplane News plan) in our national model flying federation magazine (number 4 1978) and he had contacted Hanno Prettner about engine right thrust and down thrust and got answer 1.5 degree right and 1.0 degree down, because it is not samevalue on allpublished plans of Curare. In the article it was also mentioned some other valuable things like elevator throw of 5-6 millimeter up and same downis enough, rudder throw 40 mm left, same right. V-shape on wing same as on drawing, 75 mm. Weight of his plane 3475 gram with 7 servos, building time about 200 hours.

I talk to Hanno in 1977 In Vagas when he won again and again the T/C . the reason he did not put a spinner on is because he moved the engine around so much is to find the right set so the plane would fly straight and track ,when i seen the plane he was flying that week the engine must have been to the right and down some, to put a spinner on that it would have stuck out a 1/4 of a inch out past the nose.

I'm still catching up on things on the Curare build, but I have a question...
I see that the original plane in this Forum was a MK Kit from Singapore Hobbies (which I could not find any more). But I was wondering if anyone has built the Curare that Eureka Aircraft has offered.
I'm still looking at Singapore Hobbies but can't find that Curare kit. If anyone could point me to it, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bob

I have an original MK Curare foam wing fiberglass fuse kit that has been sitting upstairs for a decade waiting for me. With it I also have new in package Spring-air retracts and a NIB OS 61 pumper. I occasionally look at this picture for motivation. Probably will put it together this fall.

What a beautiful Curare indeed
and with that Jett engine in it, I bet it really grooved while it lasted. If I remember correctly, that plane didn't last long...[&o]

4-5 years back the Singapore Hobbies website had a section dedicated to classic pattern planes, but it's gone from the website now. I guess the remaining stock has been sold out long ago.
