Default NAME THIS PLANE???????????

I picked this plane up today from one of our older club members who was not going to finish it. He bought it several years ago from another club member and can now not recall what it is. From past experience, I know this will take about ten minutes.

Well it looks like a Midwest Mach 1 kit that would be 1972 Pattern model. I have not seen one of those in many years.

None of the rigging has been done on this model. Does anyone have a set of plans? It would be nice if there were a set that could be e-mailed. I could also pay copying mailing cost.

I did check the above post, however, when I click on it to make it larger, the diagrams are legible but the writing is not. When I open it, the quality is not good enough to use.

You might want to use another type of retracts. Those Old Kraft Multicon electric retracts are heavy...and slooooow to operate, which is not good if you have a flame out. It takes several seconds for the gear to cycle. If I remember right, somewhere about 15-20 seconds. I used then in an old TROUBLEMAKER pattern plane...many years ago!

airbusdrvr. You're very welcome.

I honestly don't care about this. I mean it doesn't bother me in any way at all. But most people at RCU call me raineday. I guess they're thinking it's like "rainy day." I had a dog named Raine - pronounced rain - and my name is David. I hate trying to come up with catchy user names so I just stuck the two together. So, for the record it's rainedav (pronounced rain dave). What a dumb user name, I know.[]

You know, Dave, now that I bring my 2.75 Walmart glasses closer to the screen, these 60 year old eyes see that it is a "v" not a "y" at the end of your username. I promise it won't happen again. Smile

Don't feel bad, I'm 31 and thought the same thing until I met him! Sorry, Dave.

Brian, one thing you all can call me is absent minded. Did I meet you at Bob H's VRCS meet lasy May? I worked in Durham for five years. What part of town do you live in? I lived off Airport Rd in CH.

That's where. I was right next to you in the pit area. I was driving a red Toyota Tundra. I live in north Durham near Northern High School. Where did you work?

Yes, Brian, I do remember you. I'm really bad with names but I don't forget people I meet in person.

I was part of a web development office at Duke U. It was a great job until the higher-ups slashed the IT budgets. Rather, they diverted priorities and resources to other projects like giving every freshman a free iPod!

Please pardon me for cuttin in guys. I figured I'd take this opportunity to ask a question that's been bugging me for a few years now re. the Midwest version of the Mach 1. Was it changed any from Norm Page's original? I've heard (second or third hand admittedly) that it was and that Mr. Page was unhappy about it. I understand kit makers have to do this sometimes to maximize their wood, foam supplies etc. so I'm not trying to point a finger here.

The few times I've seen one of these kits on Ebay this question always pops up in the back of my mind so I pass it by. On the other hand sometimes I'll give in to impulse and put in an OUTRAGEOUS bid of around $200 only to see the winning bidder win the auction with a final bid of around $400 (yikes!) Scratchbuilding is looking better all the time...

I've never heard that about the Miwest version of the kit.

I have heard that Norm came out with a Mach II, but I can't find any info on it. Anyone know what was differant about the Mach II.

Maybe some pictures or plans floating around out there ?

I had some correspondence with a guy from germany that was into the old pattern planes. He forwarded a picture of a fiberglass/foam Mach 1 that was produced by an Italian company called Meyer Aviomodelli. I'll get back to him...see if he can post the pic.

Thanks for helping with the research guys. Norm Page was kind of a childhood hero of mine. First model mag I ever read was the Jan. 1974 RCM issue, remember that one with Merlin Olsen on the cover? Inside was the report on the Eighth World R/C Championships! Not the Pattern World Championships, the R/C World Championships! Pattern was the premier event and on page 44 there was the top placing American flyer Mr. Page. This was all pretty heady stuff for a 10-year-old kid (I was still a couple years away from "discovering" that Hugh Hefner magazine).

paternguy, I was unaware of the Mach 2, but I did find a picture of my hero posing with his Mach 3 so it seems reasonable to assume there was once a Mach 2. This picture is from the Oct. '75 issue of MA. It seems we have a mystery on our hands, wouldn't it be cool if somebody recreated this beauty.

Hey Guys, I remember seeing a photo of one other Mach something and
Norm Page in MAN I think, around 80-85. Maybe someone out there can
do some digging through their old mags and post a photo. I like the looks
of the Mach 3.

The MACH I. Correct ! I looked and looked at that plane, looked familiar, but first time I was one in bare bones. Mach I was Norm Page design. Going to contest's with Dave Brown in the early 70's, he and Page competed against each other. We used to watch the Mach I, impressive in cross wind maneuvers. Dave was impressive with the Phoenix, cross wind, or no wind. Does anyone know whatever happened to Norm Page? Hal Parenti was flying pattern in those days also, with Jimmy Grier, Don Lowe, Mark Radcliff,
Alan Dupler and many others.

Note: I just edited my post here. I read all previous post's on Norm Page after my comments. Glad to see a lot of you remember some of the pioneer's of pattern in those days.

Crankpin, what kind of cub is that? It looks real. Seems I see flaps, so a Super Cub? I'd better stop this J-3 stuff or someone will be fussin' about non "Classic Pattern" discussion. But a J-3 really is classic pattern. It is a classic and its speed won't allow it to get out of the pattern.

This is the Dave Patrick Super Cub. Find: davepatrickmodels.com It is an ARF, one of the best around, very real, and only $600.00 plus shipping I have had one on backorder for several months, along with many others. 108" WS. My brother gave up his full scale J3 because he was PW for many years.
