EU1A

Thanks for the pic update, Ray. EU1 wasn't as 'swanky' looking as the -A, it appears. The fuse was smoother, and fin taller, by my eye..I'll try to find the article and more pics also...

Do you have a copy or know where one can be obtained?

Ray,
Thanks a bunch for the article. I can't believe the plane was built less than 11# with that construction method!! Wood, Foam, Glass, more resin, Paint -Yowch!! I
really wanted to see how big this beast was compared to the more familiar EU1-A, so I did some scaling. The only dimension given in the whole article was the distance between wing panels at the root - 5-1/2". I used that to scale length and wingspan, and came up with the following calculations:
Fuse Length (tip to tail) : 67-1/16",
Wingspan (incl. 5-1/2" fuse) : 62-7/16"
Not significantly different than my EU1-A, as I recall, at roughly 62"WS, and 69"Fuse (with the tru-turn 3" spinner). So, by the looks of things, the two fit the same envelope. Maybe it's time for an EU1-B??

Here's a pic of my EU1-A in Kingsport TN, 1990. The Tri-CIty Aeromodelers have moved since; this was at the old field. Beautiful venue, as are most TN sites. The powerplant was a O.S. 61RF-P, w/ apc 12x10, most of the time! The plane looked great, but couldn't beat the wind. 3rd in Fayetville NC was the best it did.

Hello:
I have been out of flying for 20 yrs and have got the urge to get back to it. I have a EU1A kit , rhom air retracts and OS 61 rear exh./tuned pipe. I am interested in finding someone to put this together. Its been years since I have built any planes and don't want to relearn on this project. I've started flying some of my old pattern /sport planes and have always wanted to fly the EU1A.
Any help / guidence would be appreciated.

I have built 3 of these years ago. The only caveat I would mention is to keep it as light as possible. We did some foam cut outs in the non load bearing outboard parts of the wing and use minimal paint to finish the plane. Also we monokoted the wings rather than used paint. Hope
this helps. PS If you want to sell the kit, I'm here.!!! I'd love to have another one. Skip 770-253-0306

this has been my experience with my twice-restored EU-1A - my all time favorite prop plane. the EU-1A is a huge plane for 60. even if built light it needs a stronger engine than the OS. i've been flying mine for a couple of years with the OS61V with the OS pipe and 11x7.5 zinger and @ 14500RPM performance was just ok. when i switched last summer to the YS60FR and MAC pipe and Zinger 11x7.5 the EU-1A's performance was vastly improved - it was a different airplane. no longer feel the need to manage the interia anymore just to get through the maneuvers as compared to the OS. speed is way up, horizon to horizon knife edge flight are now no problem, phenominal vertical, huge loops . i havent tried other props yet or more nitro (currently running 5-10%). was so impressed with the performance gain i never bothered to tach the YS yet. do yourself a favor and save the OS for another smaller, lighter pattern ship like a phoenix 7 or 8, etc.
the YS60FR is no longer maufactured but you will see them for sale on RCU or *bay. they are different to operate than a standard 2-cycle because of the built-in pump and pressurized fuel system, but it is not difficult if you follow the instructions. also, wrap your fuel tank with duct tape to prevent bursting from the pump pressure. find a new engine if you can (i found 2 NIB) because, except for bearings and pump diaphrams, parts such as gaskets, cranks and pistons/liners are very difficult to find. if you cant find a new one get a used one but make sure the piston/liner are ok - then just replace the bearings and the pump diaphram and you should be ok.

The EU1A Kit will be available in about 3 weeks.(Hmmmmm, I think based on intergalatic time that we have almost reached the "3 week" mark. although time in Texas moves much slower.

Tony,
Lately the soup has been frozen as well as the shop.. but... we are investing in yet another kerosene heater so I can get everything hot enough. Funny has gas is $1.80 a gallon but kerosene is $4. At any rate we are getting ready as quickly as possible. Thank for everyone's patience.... now Dave... about that electric comment.....LOL

Thanks, I never know what to search under. I tried EU1-A, EU1A and general searches. I always wonder how many things go by without me seeing them. Then again I would spend more $ than I do now.

I had sent Dan some wing templates a couple weeks ago from my unbuilt kit for his use in checking his templates. I would like to see what he sells in the way of classic Pattern. I'm sure the EU-1A will be top notch. I've got a lot of older (80's) engines, retracts and planes that I enjoy but try not to fly them too much. It would be nice to obtain some current versions of the classics for my flying.

Have the blister problem from earlier posts and she's done now. Made 2 flights on her today and was VERY impressed. Total weight is 12.2 pounds, thats dry, but she's got a rossi 90 in the nose. Almost no trim needed for maiden. maybe some 2 clicks up. Rolls are very nice. Loops are OK, but that's cause I don't have alot of deflection right now. Might just leave it there though, cause it is much smoother. 4 points are great, just some small amount of cross-coupling but as I get time on her I'll prog it out or just deal with it as we did before computer radios. Vertical is something to see. She just goes up. No problem AT ALL. Am turning APC 13-6 at 13,600 rpm on the ground. Still on the break-in rich mix, and really don't have a clue what prop I should use. Any suggestions? 15 % omega, 83 deg Ga sunshine. Hope to get more time tomorrow. Am very relieved nothing happened today, but pleased to say the least.

Great looking EU1-A. Have you tried exponential on the elevator? Soft neutral with enough throw to provide more 'authority' at stick extremes. As for the prop; the 13" diameter is providing all your vertical pull. I would experiment with a few different pitches (6,7,8,9) and see what you like best. Keep us posted

Will try expo in the future. I'm not where I used to be, and am willing to learn to do better. Will certainly try other pitches after some more air-break-in. Do you think the rpm is in the right range. It doesn't jump on the pipe yet, but some leaning might reveal more.
Thanks Guys.
