Exclusive Interview of Dave Brown!!
An exclusive interview of pattern icon, former AMA President and model airplane ambassador Dave Brown will be featured in my September newsletter. This will NOT be in any national magazines or internet community site and is ONLY available by request via RCU (PM) or e-mail. There is no cost or fee to receive the newsletter containing information about Classic Pattern.
Sneek Peek:
Dave Brown speaking about his early days of R/C...
"...I actually taught myself to fly using a Digitrol 4 channel radio I built in the mid-60's. Initially I was interested in sport flying and shortly after I had learned to fly, the Service sent me to Germany for a couple of years. I started flying in contests which offered two classes consisting of a beginner or basic class and the class I chose to fly, FAI. The second year I won the German State Championships for which I received a certificate...a very special treasure I still possess."
"...in 1970 I flew in my first AMA Nationals, my third contest in the US and placed First in Class D Novice flying a Bar-Fli. The Bar-Fli was designed by Phil Kraft was quite small, had a slab sided fuselage, powered by an Enya .60 and was specifically created as a "wind" airplane."
"...as an adult, I have lived in basically (2) houses and these houses have had four US World Championship Team members living in them. Mark Radcliff (who I hired to work at World Engines) Tony Frakowiak (a young pilot I discovered who also began working at World Engines), Qui Que Somenzini and myself. I believe I met Qui Que and his parents at the 1981 World Championships(?)...Qui Que arrived at our home in the Fall of the following year..."
The interview is being conducted over a series of telephone conversations, e-mail and if logistics work...a meeting at the EAA "Air Venture" later this month in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
One of my newsletter subscribers suggested I invite questions be submitted...Ok...ask Dave and Sally Brown a question! Send me a RCU (PM) e-mail ([email protected]) and I will ask it.
The newsletter will be available in late September 2009.

Rusty,
Nice. I look forward to the full interview in the CP-T September issue.
here's an extended question:
Dave,
what prompted you to modify Dick Hanson's Tiporare design to produce the Illusion? How did this design layout change unfold - was it a "we need to reduce the stab anhedral, bring the wing up to the thrust line, increase the area and change the nose moment" or did the idea evolve over a series of Tipo buids and test flights? Compared to the Tiporare, how would you describe the flight behavior of the Illusion?
As a side note, please let Dave know that both the Tiporare and Illusion are an on going inspiration to us all and I hope to send him a picture of a 40" span Tipo I'm almost finished building. I have named it the Picorare. Also, if he doesn't object, I have plans to build a model I'd like to call the Mirage. The Mirage will be a slight variation on a 48" span Illusion built and hopefully finished as a replica of his full size model.
Many thanks!
David.

Exclusive Interview of Dave Brown!!
Doxilia...
Excellent questions. Dave is a very lovely guy and will be flattered by your efforts.
I did ask Dave where his models are and if he has many still in his custody.
He has many, many, many great stories and one of them I was coincidentally witness to at the 1979 Lincoln, NE NATS.

Rusty, this is great. I spent many an evening's at Dave's house, in the late 60's, early 70's, building Phoenix'. When the TOC came along, Dave built two Godfrey Laser 200's. At a contest, or the flying field, Dave and Sally would help anyone, at anytime. What a great couple, they have made friends world wide.

Exclusive Interview of Dave Brown!!
I am in the process of loading the RV for ourfamily trip to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture 2009. Any aviation buff must consider visiting this event. Virtually every airplane built after 1910 is available for viewing...in flight! My kids have a favorite spot which is located at show center by the control tower, the peddle planes.
I expect to meet up with Dave Brown somewhere to visit some more about his remarkable achievements.

I spoke with Dave when the Nationals were in Seguin, Texas in 1977, or was it 78? He was flying a World Engines Expert radio, as did I at the time. My World Engines radio spent more time crahsing airplanes and going to Cincinatti for repair than it did flying. The word is Dave had ProLine electronic components inside the World Engines Tx. My question is: Was this true?

I worked at World with Dave for several years. That is absolutely not true. The electronics were the same design as production systems. They were carefully prepared and well-tuned, but the same design.

Not true, it was WE. I flew the WE Expert black box with open gimbal's also. Used one tx, 2 flight packs. Never a glitch or a crash. I had exactly the same radio as Dave. That radio is still flying in Cincinnati, Ohio, it was sent to Radio South for some update's, after almost 40 years. We did not get anything going with reliable radio's at WE until Dave came aboard.
I gave it away to a good friend.

My own experience relates fondly to the Expert radio.... It was the first full-house system I ever had or even saw that worked flawlessly. I was a 17 year old working at House of Hobbies in Tulsa and my boss (Bill Knost) let me pay it out in 8 weeks of partial paychecks........... I think I gave 225.00 for it (5 channel) and it gave me some real happy memories and a solid RC experience. The radio that works is always the best, but many of us in Tulsa (1976) were flying these. and they were solid in this area. Sorry to hear the guy that had problems...I loved the feel of open gimbaled sticks on that radio too. (Memories are sweet )

From what I heard back in that time period, my radio was a bit unusual in regards to having problems. I would take it out to the club field, fly a couple of times, and the next time I turn it on, no control response, just jittering servos. Off to Cincinatti, another RX replacement. My parents bought me a Futaba G Series AM 7 Channel system for my graduation present from university... never had a radio related failure after that. I do miss those gimbals! Nothing compares to them today.

Exclusive Interview of Dave Brown!!
Update: Dave and I were not able to get together at the EAA...the interview continues.
The family did have a great time at EAA...the peddle planes could occupy my kids for hours.

The NATS were in Seguin in 1981.
That Proline rumor was one that was around for years, but as TonyF said it wasnt true.
Actually, my radios today have Proline electronics in them not really JR/Spektrum.
Just Kiddin.

Amazing! Proline Lives!!! 1981 was my senior year at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. Ok, I will admit it now..... there is World Engines electronics in my Airtronics SD-10G, converted to 2.4, of course.

You're more correct than you knowJim Fosgate created the processor for Dolby Pro Logic surround sound, and also was awarded an Emmy for his "Develpment of Surround Sound for Television". In a way, Proline does live.....and not just in my single stick Competition Six!!!
Kevin
P.S. I was at the Nats in Seguin, & it was HOT!

The heat is one of my most vivid memories of the NATS in Seguin. That and the scorpion that crawled under my Tipo when I was in the ready box.

I was a spectator at the Seguin Nats. I wanted to fly in scale , but my plane was not ready. I was watching the pattern line on Friday, I believe, and someone was flying their UglyStick and I thought to my self, "Hell if I knew that I would have brought mine." Me, gullible eight grader, thinking I had to have magazine candy to play. I remember how pretty the pattern, F1, and scale planes were. And it was hot.

As a member of the Tri-Cities R/C Club, which flew at the Randolph AFB Auxillary field, I had the opportunity to volunteer. I flagged for F1 Pylon. It is a shame the NATS no longer travel. Muncie for all it's glory is just too far to travel. I will never be able to fly at a NATS.[
