This is my first RC heli and I have been having a blast learning how to fly it. I have replaced the the skids with the MIA Tuff Skids after breaking 2 of the stock ones and also the blade grips with a metal one. I have progressed to flying banked turns around the post in my basement and can control the heli pretty well when I don't get too confident. I still crash into the walls quite often, mostly when I run out of room when trying to recover from higher speed moves. I have the dual rate set to "high".
I have a few questions to experienced mSR owners:
1.- I have to give the heli significantly more left rudder to start turning than right rudder (probably around 30% stick travel left before anything start happening). Makes it much harder to fly counterclockwise turns. Is this normal?
2.- The tail will hold direction OK, but it has a bit of a "shutter". Is this normal?
3.- When hovering without any stick input, it will wander in all 4 directions. Is this normal?

4.- Would using a better TX (i.e. DX6i) make a difference in flight control?

Just trying to figure out if I broke something or if all is as it should be since I have no comparison or experience with another heli.

All input appreciated.

to make this easy, i can answer all your questions with one word. yes, all is how it should be. those are some of the down sides to a fp heli. as you get better, you find more down falls of them. as fun as they are, they do have draw backs.

Yes agree with above reponse -all normal for an MSR,

Also youmay notice when you look at the hel from directly behind (at eye level) that the main shaft leans slightly to the left, its part of it's design to counter normal sideways movement but it means that it turns to the right aremuch easier than to the left.

And yes it is better to fly it with a DX6i, you can bind it easily, but one trick, because of it's electronic setup it is better to select plane mode and not heli mode in DX6i (it says this in the manual). However, having said that, Ihave flown it in both modes on the DX6i and in heli mode played around with some of thesettings, you can make it like an mcx or like an msr on steriods, but without doing anything but selecting plane mode and binding it, the msr will fly better on the DX6i.

Highly debateable, in my opinion. If you know what you're doing with the programming, heli mode is DEFINITELYbetter. In "ACRO" or plane mode, there's no option to adjust throttle curve. Adjusting the throttle curve and having a non-linear throttle curve has two big advantages. 1) Better hover control and throttle response in the mid stick range. and 2) having butter smooth throttle response in the mid stick range will reduce the amount ANDseverity of torque changes coming off the main rotors since the speed changes will be smooth and gradual. This means the tail motor doesn't have to work as hard trying to speed up and slow down to compensate for the increase or decrease in torque from the main rotors. This goes a long way to giving you rock solid tail hold (or solidER tail hold) ANDextend the life of your tail motor.

Just my $.02

Matt,

I would agree with what you say, in fact I said above that in heli mode you can adjust things in the Tx and make it fly quite differently, I had it so sleepyin one set upthat at mid stick I think I could hear it snoring. In plane (acro) you can't adjust things, it just states in the Horizon manuals that you should set it up in plane mode. I guess because they figure that most people flying an MSR wouldn't be fiddling around with throttle curves too much??

Matt,

FYI This is the actual text of the addendum that Horizon issued for the MSR manual;

If you’re using a computer transmitter, we suggest you select a clean model memory,

set the transmitter on ACRO or AIRPLANE mode, default servo settings, neutral trim

settings, bind and fly. Futaba transmitters (equipped with Spektrum modules) may

require you to reverse the throttle channel.

Hey Flying Fiz,
Please don't think I was trying to prove you wrong or anything. I was simply stating my opinion on the topic. It depends on what kind of flying you do and how comfortable you are with programming the transmitter.
In anothe thread, someone explain why they suggested using acro mode, I vaguely remember it being something about because it's not a 5 channel heli, the acro mode makes it fly funny for some reason, I think.

Matt,

No that's all fine and I think we are in agreement, that if your have the knowledge, heli mode and some adjustments is the better way to go.

Interesting that you think it flies funny in acro, I didn't experience that, I thought in acro itwas much the same as the little tx it came with but just because it's a DX6i the feel and control is much better.

I haven't flown my mSR on acro with my DX6i. I'm just going by what I've heard. I found some great info on how to program the DX6i in heli mode with better throttle curves and such andI've been using that. It's worked great for me and I've had noticeably less blow outs under harder acceleration.
http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/blade-msr-tips.html

I bought that for $9 and it's been GREAT! Found a lot of good info in it. Well worth the 9 bucks in my opinion. The guys entire website is pretty good.

Matt,

I agree, I have purchased a number of John Salt's books from his fantastic website, another good publication is "how to level the swash plate of a CP heli" I think the title actually makes reference to 120/140 degree swash plates .

Man if you follow that through your CP heli will be as smooth as can be in the air, well worth the time and effort.
