i currantly have a blade cp, and after looking at websites and mags i like the scale models more than sport flying...
my question its, is the blade cp a good platform for scale flying or are there better more stable helis for moderate flying... i.e figure eights, hoovering... ect pretty much everything but 3d flight...
btw, i love the hughes 500 bodies... i feel a scale police heli coming on... lol

i do mostly scale flying - you have to remember i got into rc heli's cause i found i couldn't afford to finish getting a rotor wing license, so to me scale flying is 'real' flying - once you get comfortable with normal mode, you'll probably want to explore stunt mode a bit for handling the weirdness that happens when you least expect it - 99% of scale flying is boring, and i love it
grinding round the pattern doing touch and goes, helipad hopping, off-airport and cliff-top landings, power off autorotations, video and still camera work (ch5/gear servo clicker works great with a still camera), night flights and 'missions' of various kinds
you can do pretty much anything except get out and walk around once you land somewhere

thats exactly the kind of flying i love...
what heli do you use, cp?

I"m with Edge, that's exactly the type of flying I enjoy! I'm just moving from the CX2 to a Walkera#4 fixed pitch. Nice little heli, Fixed pitch so it isn't as steep of a learning curve moving to a collective pitch machine. Does some very nice scale flying. Cheap to repair and is tough as nails. I'm thinking an HBK2 or even a Belt CP might be my next bird after the #4. Would love an RC-Tek Diablo or a Trex but my pockets just aren't deep enough!

If you want scale flying, i would go with something a little larger (heavier) than a CP. The bigger the chopper the more stable its going to be and the more you would enjoy just putting around i would think. It doesnt need to be light and sporty if your not going to try 3d flight. I like my CP+, but for just cruising around i would rather have a larger heli.

what is a bigger one? without the big price tag.. id love a trex450... but talk about sticker shock... ekk...
how about the honey bee king?
how about the honey bee king?

i have a couple of 350-450 sized heli's for 'through the glass' flying and video work, including the hbk2, and a new helimax axe 3d 'stunt pig' for exploring stunt mode
i really want a blade 400 instead of a 350-ish belt-cp - the bigger they are, the better they fly forward and the more stable the video - i've done one paid job already taking video for a real-estate ad

if i am just looking to do scale flying, should i be looking into a fixed pitch heli? can the blade cp be converted to fixed pitch?

HeliMike--
The Honey Bee King 2 is a good choice. (HBK2)...Good selection of full scale bodies, and any of the vets on here, will tell you it's a good heli. (With the brushless. Stock motor is underpowered.) $209.00 will get ya an HBK2 with a brushless set-up on this web-site here http://jaghobbies.com/rc_planes/ek1h-e016a_cart.htm I started with the CP-Pro, then picked up a CX2, and a Trex 450. My next heli is going to be the HBK2, without a doubt.
Better hurry, Christmas is coming...Lol..!

The HBK2 is only slightly bigger than the blade cp (little bit longer and taller because of the bigger/slightly more complicated rotor head assembly). They handle quite a bit differently though. The belt driven tail makes a big difference. I have my Blade CP+ setup kinda "lazy" though, flat bottom blades and low head speed, I could probably set it up to handle more like the HBK2 but it'll never be the same.

the BCP is NOTHING like the King2, the BCP is junk compared to the King2, the king2 is also a lot heavier then the BCP and a lot more stable.

Heli Mike 81,
The HBK2 is in between the size of the CP and a Trex 450. Had 'em all. When installing a Scale Body, the one thing that it does, is add alot of weight. Unless you upgrade your CP to a brushless motor (a gyro would be nice too) I don't thing the stock motor on a CP would lift it off the ground. That hold true for a Stock HBK2, you'll need the extra power and head speed that the brushed motors won't give you. Myself, I'd vote for a HBK2 with a 3800kv motor and a 10 tooth pinion. The 8 tooth won't give you the head speed you need. Not sure about the 9 tooth. But the 10 tooth has plenty of punch. You could even go with an 11 tooth pinion. An 11 tooth on a stock HBK2, makes it rock. Also, the HBK2 has a belt driven tail rotor, so you don't need to worry about tail motors going out, or readjusting the proportion mix all the time either.

honestly mike, alls you need to know is heavier helis with lower headspeeds make better scale flyers. while you might want a bit of excess power to handle sudden loss of lift due to wind & whatnot, a scale heli imo should be "barely powered". it makes the rotor sound more scale like, it's easier to hold a scale like hover, and the blades move slower so you can fly much longer (less drag).
for this reason you might like the blade cp pro with flat bottom blades & a smaller pinion. you'll probably want a big lipo like 3s1320 or so. imo heading hold & idle-up are "anti-scale" items. you might even want to go against the aerobatic grain of these forums & add a tad more pitch than most would recommend, just to slow it down some for that "whoppawhoppawhoppa..." effect.

watch it - too much pitch will bog the motor and stall the blades, which in the end means it falls out of the sky - too much weight will do the same, whether battery or body
the collective pitch head speed is so much higher - never put fp blades on a cp (been there done that), you'll fry the 4-in-1 - and the pitch on fp blades is like +10 degrees for a 0 degrees mount, so the pitch the cp adds makes them way too high and it stalls real bad - blows a lot of air, though - you could resort to this if you ever needed the cp to lift a hammer or something, but it'll probably kill the motor
the biggest problem with the hbk2 is the belt - sometimes it gets hung up under its own rollers and, well, its a belt, if the fan belt goes out on your car that's one thing, but the tail drive belt breaking in mid-air is a scary thought - i wish there was a redundant solution like two smaller belts running side by side or something like the r22
the falcon's shaft drive is neato, but i bet one good crash will knock it out of line forever and she'll shake like a belly dancer until it comes apart
also, if you, like me, have been used to the instant response of the cp's tail rotor, there's seemingly a slowness to the response of these tail-servo types - its not bad, but its there
heading hold gyro is useful when on a long final bucking a crosswind, but i have yet to use idle-up as it is meant to be used, although the collective coming up from the floor and the low throttle position being at the top sounds good, my thumbs remember low at the bottom a lot quicker - the dx7 supports flight mode 1 and 2 besides normal - llnacp and hwlf modes?

Mike 81,
Here's a vid of a scale, just hovering, don't know what heli it is. It may be a 400 size.

And pasted with flying colors.
Stump3r,
I'm sure, you've heard thru the grape vine, that, I've got a Logo 10 and a Lipo for it, is $289.00. OUCH!!

Ouch!!!! Man if you saw that thing start to puff up on you I'm pretty sure a guy would shed a tear or three. This hobby is expensive. Then again I know of no other hobby that offers as many smiles per dollar.

I thought the same...Watch one of those explode on ya...Miniature bomb...Lol..
Dave-- My dad got his AirThunder for $240.00...But that was only 5000mah. Not sure if you were going with the 6000mah or not. Those Airthunder's seem to be panning out pretty good it seems...Heard there associated with Kong packs. My dad talked to one of the cust service reps, and provided excellent service, and even speaked english...Lol..Just a thought...I think it was last months issue of RC-Heli, that offered a $20.00 coupon.
Shane-- 5000mah AirThunder weighs more than are CX2's...! And also my Trex 450...Lol..There a brick !
Have fun gents,

Stump3r,
Your right, I'll give you an A+ too, this can be/and is a very expensive hobby. I've said this alot as an example, MOST hobbies are expensive, Hmmm, how about a Harley Davidson, a BIG ***** boat or something. Helis aren't that aweful to bad, when put it into perspective. HEY, my wallet is alot thinner, what's up with that?[sm=confused.gif][sm=confused.gif][sm=confused.gif] I shed tears on a busted blade.[sm=cry_smile.gif]
Take care and have fun,

J-MICHAEL,
The Lipo I was looking at, haven't bought it yet, is 8000 mAh. Should give 15 to 20 minutes flight time.
I have alot of shopping and research to do, before the Logo is in flight. As mentioned, looking at March or so of next year. No hurry. It's a project for the winter months. [sm=wink_smile.gif]
