Default Titanium Upgrades

Well, it's been awhile since I've been here and I'm still flying the same old CX\2 that I've been flying since I joined over a year ago!! What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment Anyhow, I've been reading about the inner\outer shaft upgrades, namely carbon fiber (outer) and titanium (inner) shafts. What I'd like to know is, what are the dimensions of the carbon fiber tube and the titanium 'wire' that I need? There's a place here in Jackson that sells the titanium wire (and tubing) and, of course, the LHS has the carbon tubing. Who knows, I may even try a titanium outer shaft as well. I'll give the CX\2 one thing, it IS a pretty durable little bird. Any help sure would be appreicated....HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!

Ben ~

Some of the info your looking for might be found in the link below to a older thread here on the E-Flite forum. I know Gary (Goldslinger) and Rice had changed over there CX2's to some CF for the shafts. Hope it gets ya started.... Mostly focused on the CF outer shaft. Somewhere on here there was a listing of the sizes, but I can't remember where. Yeah I need to replace my inner shaft on my CX2 also. I actually have it on the workbench for the last few days to work on her a bit. My CPP's training gear uses the same diameter as the CX2's inner shaft, so I'am going to cut off a chunk of the CF rod that goes to wiffle balls and cut to length, and apply a couple of those flat spots in the 2 key areas and then see how it goes. It should be a walk in the park, nothing to complicated there.

Its been on the bench for about a week, I suppose now would be a good time to piddle ! Good luck to ya.....

Thanks for the reply J-Michael!! Also for another idea I haven't thought of, namely the training gear!! I still have mine and that's a pretty good idea converting it to an inner shaft!! I think I'll dig out the Dremel and try that. Again, thanks for the reply AND that idea! I'm going to give it a try now and I'll let ya know how it goes!!

Very cool your gonna try ! I haven't had the dang time, but have been itching to see if it would work. I really believe so... I've used portions of that training gear rod (Have 2 old sets) for cutting out new skid supports for the CPP also. It fits. I've also used slightly bent CX2 inner shafts cut to length for the CPP skid supports also. It made them a little heavier when I needed extra weight in the lower CG area for stability. Of course its off now....

Also with that rod, I've used it for replacement pieces for the canopy support rods on the CX2 and CPP. And also at one time for weight purposes used also the bent CX2 shafts cut to size. I recently thought I could use it for a CF replacement for the aluminum flybar rod on the CPP, but the flybar rod on the CPP was smaller. They seem to use that same diameter for the training gear rod for a few different things, so I guess its good to be a pack-rat and not throw to much away.

Let us know how it goes, since I'am lacking the time. I suppose if I get off here, it would help ! (LMAO).

I can't remember what the best combo was from the few that have experimented, but I know Goldslinger, Eat2muchrice, and Systemlord have the knowledge if you find old posts of there's. Systemlord still frequents here often and might see your post. I can't remember if its the Titanium inner shaft, going with the CF outer, or vice-versa... Or just Titanium for both, which I believe Sytemlord had done. He showed a picture at one time of the CX2 splatted on I-5 off the side I believe, and I had thought he said it fell from a powerline distance with only slight damage to one of the shafts.

Anyhoo, good luck to ya !

Well, I just spent about 45 minutes outlining how this mod worked and how to make it work successfully and when I went to post it, it said that I 'timed out' so everything I wrote was a total waste of time!! So, in a nutshell, it does work quite well, but the shaft has to be sanded since it is larger than the stock shaft. There's ALOT more to it than that and I'm sorry, but I'm not going to spend another 45 minutes re-writing this procedure just to have it 'timed out.' That purely sux!!!

BenMer,

That flat out sucks, doesn't it?? [&o]

Been there, done that...I think most of us have...it's not always a time out issue, it's a bug in the forum software or server or something....

While I don't have a solution, I can recommend a fix....most of us do it on here....

When you get done typing your message (especially a long one)....right click on the message, and then "select all" .... then, right click again, and click "copy"....

Then you will have a copy stored on your PC memory, and if that happens, you can close that whole reply, open a new one, and then right click, and click "paste" and it will apply the message in the new reply box....

Practice on a few small ones....I think there is even a "practice forum" somewhere on here...??

Good luck, and I hope it helps, I KNOW how frustrating that can be!!!![X(][X(]

Thanks for the tip, Rotarydoc! I'm going to try it that way and see how much success I have. Normally I wouldn't bother with it anymore, but J-Michael had a good idea and it really does work quite well and hopefully someone else may get some benefit from it also. BTW, the landing gear does have a larger diameter than the center shaft and won't fit into the metal upper head, the top bearing, or the lower bearing, but it is doable and, like I said, works quite well. Again, thank-you for the tip, it was much appreicated.

Ben ~

That's great it worked ! When I ran a piece I cut off from the training gear and ran it through my upper bearing, swash, etc. I thought it was going to be a sliver smaller. I bet there's just small variances in the sizes maybe ? But it will work, I just need to go through the process as you did. Yeah it seems like something simple always comes out to be a bigger project. I'll expect it then.... I can't wait to see how well it holds up to a crash now.

Like Glenn said, sorry that you lost your review that you typed up. Eh...! I've been there and done that also. However, for the longest time I never send any post off until I copy and paste it. Then if it fails, I just go back to the message board and click "paste" and my memo is back.

Have a good one,

~ Jeff
