Gaudius

After about 20 flights i decide to put on the new rudder with thicker TE, the problem was that yesterday we had strong crosswind at our airfield. So from what i was able so see is that the model is now much slower and the rudder authority i believe is better. I will wait for a calm day to see some more details.
The final weight of the new rudder is 65gr instead of 80gr of the original and i can change it in about 15 minutes.( just pull out the 0.8mm steel rod i pass through all hinges and put it back in place).

After having lost my Leviosa for a stupid mistake (one screw...), I received rather unexpectedly a Gaudius instead of a second Leviosa... No problem! The planes flies great and - set up as per instrucrions - needed one click of trim to fly absolutely straight and level. Excellent machine! My setup: Plettenberg Xtra 30-10 EVO on a PT Model 21x13 carbon prop, Yeti Spin 99, Dualsky 5000 mAh 10S, Futaba gear.
Here are some pics!

Hi Claude,
On the pics of my install you can see that i constructed quite a long battery mounting frame.
In the end only the part in front of the landinggear is used.
With a 1200gr battery the backside of the battery is about in line with the center of the landing gear.
CG is just in front of wingtube.
Regards,
Hans

Hello
Thanks to Hans, Alex, Harris. Yours comments and pictures help me.
So my friend gave me nida plate he bought in Modelltecnik-Lorenz to install on his plane.
Batteries are fixed on the plate. The plate will be slipped in slots and screwed (pictures are better than my explanations !)
May be it's quicker to move batteries !

Does anyone have a template of the firewall shape for the Gaudius? I'm putting a Gaudius together for the US Nationals next month in Muncie and it would help speed along the project if I had an existing firewall outline to start from... A PDF file or even a photo would be great. It'll be powered by a rear-mounted Pletty 30-10 Evo.
Thanks, Jerry

I've only got nine flights on mine but it is feeling pretty good. I'm taking out some of the upthrust but everything else is just a matter of fine tuning.

Hi Jim,
I am very happy to know that we have the same plane. I used to read your RCM articles many years ago. I am planing to add the flare in the rudder too. Planing to get it close to 25-26 mm total. I already took out the upthrust too. Please keep the information flowing as you have chance to finish trimming. I won't be able fly mine since it is too cold here in Kansas.

It's been my experience that you are much better off adding aft lateral area instead of rudder flares. I feel that adding drag to increase stability is not the way to go. Install a set of stab fences instead of the rudder flare. Less drag and better overall performance.
Everybody here who has shown pictures of their Contra is using the Brenner Contra Drive. I think Jim is using a Neu motor.

Tony,
Thanks for the comment. I will try your idea. It will be also easier and cleaner in the Gaudious. Yes, using Brenner contra and New motor.
